George Jackson COCKING was born before 16 October 1825 in Beeston, Sandy in Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. Sandy is a parish (with records since 1538) in the middle east of Bedfordshire near the border with Cambridgeshire. Sandy town itself is just off the Biggleswade to Bedford road about half way between.
He was married to Anne Triplow sometime before 1852.
They had at least two sons: William George COCKING born on 31st January 1852 and possibly John (see Kelly's Directory notes below). At the time of William's birth George was a gardener but later became a farmer (as shown in his son's Marriage Certificate in 1893).
In a book "Methodism in Kempston 1960 - Notes for the Centenary of Kempston West Methodist Church" by Reverend Frederick Pilkington George Jackson COCKING is mentioned on Page 8 in relation to the building of a new chapel. On 24 March 1858 the society at Bell End grew and was in need of another church. It was agreed to build one for the cost of £650. The day the church opened, the land, "lately part of an orchard", was conveyed from John Dudley to Doctor Thomas Barker and thirteen trustees. Included in the list of thirteen was George Jackson Cocking, Gardener (meaning market gardener). However, he and ten others shown were not shown as a trustees two years later.
Kelly's Directory for Bedfordshire shows under Kempston, in the Commercial list, the following entries:
1869 - Cocking Geo. Market Gardener & Farmer.
1885 - Cocking Geo. Jackson, Frmr. Lodge Farm.
1890 - Cocking Geo. Jackson, Frmr. Lodge Farm.
Cocking John, Farmer, College Farm.
The Biggleswade Chronicle of 16 January 1914 covering the death of his son William George COCKING on 8th January 1914 showed the brief background of George Jackson:
He (William) was son of the late Mr. George Jackson Cocking, who was a large farmer at Kempston for many years. His father, who died a year or two ago was a native of Beeston and a well-known Wesleyan Methodist worker at Beeston and at Kempston, but during his later years became a Churchwarden at the latter town. The article also showed that William had a brother who paid William 3/6 a week and paid his rent.

Leixman, novelist and editor of humorist journals 'Zozimus' and 'Ireland's Eye'.
Wikipedia 22 Jun 2019:
Dowling was born in southern Ireland in 1846. He worked with a group of Irish writers producing a paper called Zolius. He moved to England and then wrote short stories for London Illustrated News. Building upon the success of his short stories, he wrote his first novel The Mystery of Killard. Many of the stories are set in locations he would have known. The subject matter is a mixture of detective, crime and mystery.
He lived in Clapham in West London with his wife and three children, Margret, Sarah and David. He died at the age of 52, just as he was becoming known as a popular writer. His books were still published for a number of years after his death. It is understood that Downey (of publisher Ward and Downey) was a cousin.
Copies of the books are kept in the National Library in London and are available on line now they have been digitised.
