George William COCKING was born on the 28th February 1894 to William George COCKING, a printer, and Annie Hobbs FRANCIS. He was christened COCKING however, due to mother's second marriage, took name of TOPHAM.

George fought in World War One in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Whilst fighting in the miserable trenches George contracted tuberculosis (TB). On his return to England, this caused family problems as his future wife's parents forbade the marriage as a result. He left the Army in 1919.

He had been awarded four medals for his military service.

Following his Military Service George worked as an Asylum Attendant.

George married Rose Hanna CHALKLEY who was to die herself a year before him.

They married in a Registry Office in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, UK. on 25th May 1918. She gave her age as 27 years and he as 24 years. At the time he was employed as a builder's labourer and she as a general Domestic Servant. George's Residence at the time of Marriage was Handley's Yard, Biggleswade. Rose Hannah's was shown as St. Andrew Street, Biggleswade.

One of the witnesses to the marriage was Annie Topham who may well be George's sister. The other witness was George Francis, probably a mutual friend of the couple.

George died tragically, a 'post-war' hero of the trenches, on 25th April 1923 at Mulberry Cottages, Old Knebworth, of TB leaving two baby daughters Ellen Rose born in 1919 and Margaret born in 1921.

NB. The Baptism Certificate, for daughter Ellen Rose Cocking, shows three sponsors. Two of these are on Rose Hanna's side of the family but the third, Lewis Alfred Ware, is likely to be of George's choice being either a relative or a good friend.

Pavenham is a parish (with records since 1561) in the north east of Bedfordshire. It appears that it once linked with the parish of Felmersham. Pavenham or Pavingham town itself is situated on the road going north east from Bedford to Harrold and very close to the River Ouse.

Eleventh child.

Herbert lived at Mullberry Cottages, Old Knebworth until his employment, as Farm Worker, took him Hayes Farm, Aston, Stevenage Hertfordshire. For the same reason he moved to his last know address 29 Park Lane, Old Knebworth. Notably he, and his mother Adelaide North, looked after the two baby daughters of sister Rose Hanna after she and her husband died young of lung complaints.

Herbie married a girl called Rose but it is not believed, by Rose STEPHENS, that they had children.

Herbie was exempt from National Service as he was a farmer.

He married Adeline NORTH on 15th January 1887 at the Parish Church of Stevenage in Hertfordshire, UK. Henry gave his age as 28 years, a bachelor and labourer of Stevenage. Adeline was 20 years old.

In the 1891 UK Census for Knebworth carried out on the 7th April 1891 the entry 26 for this family was as follows:

Henry was mentioned on daughter Rosanna's Marriage Certificate as a Farmers Horsekeeper. As Rosanna's husband George's father was shown as deceased it is reasonable to assume that Henry was alive at the time of the marriage in 1918.

Rose STEPHENS remembers that Henry worked on farms owned by people called 'Muirhead' and 'Sapsed'.

Henry died on 30th March 1920, aged 60 years, of Pneumonia. At death his occupation was shown as a Farm Labourer. The death was registered by his daughter Margaret. Straw Plaiting:
Straw plaiting was a 'cottage industry', like lace making, being something women could do at home to earn money. It was common in the Hertfordshire area due to factories such as the one at Redbourn making straw hats and bonnets. The straw was oat straw, cut into nine inch lengths. It was soaked in water to soften it and then flattened by pulling it through special rollers, whic were usually screwed to the cottage door post. The straws were the plaited into long strands and the women sold them to the local plait dealer. Local records in Hertfordshire showed they were paid a shilling for 200 yards.
