Alexander Dowling was the second son of Daniel Joseph Dowling and Mary Burke. He was born on 23rd June 1919 above his father's shop in Market Square, Mountrath, Queen's County (soon to be called Leix or Laoighis), Ireland. Alex was baptised on 26th June 1919 at St. Fintan's Church in the new Parish of Mountrath in the Diocese of Kildare and Laoghlin. His father and mother were present at the baptism as were his Godparents: Arthur Phelan and Ms Burke, probably a sister of Mary. Numerous checks do not find a certificate of birth under the Registration of Births Act 1863.
In 1922, when Alex was only 3 years old, his mother Mary, suffering from the strain of pre-natal depression in her fourth pregnancy, was taken into hospital where she was to stay for the rest of her life. She died later in that hospital on 13th July 1958 aged 68 years.

Alex was left in the care of his father who employed a Mrs Guilfoyle to look after all of the children. The children also spent much of their time with their uncles and aunts and particularly with their other relations - the Phelans. The farm where Julia Phelan (posibly nee Breen married to Edward Phelan) lived with her many children was a favourite haunt of the children; Alex remembered taking home made lemonade out to members of the Phelan family working in the fields at harvest time.
He attended Mountrath's St. Fintan's National School with the rest of his family. The school was run by the church and used to force the children into cold showers in an outhouse. He used to sing in the St. Fintan's Church School Choir.
He and his brother, Thomas, slept in the room above the kitchen at the back of the house and Alex could remember people coming into the pub through the back way after closing time.
A week after confirmation, when Alex was 10 years old, further tragedy struck the family as Daniel, his father, died of a long term heart disease. This was on 7th May 1930. Now with mother in hospital and father deceased they were cared for by their uncle Edward at Dysartbeagh the family home. But more tragedy was yet to come.
At the age of 11 years sister May contracted meningitis the year after Daniel's death and, still heavy with the sadness of that event, she died in 1931 too weak to fight the disease.
The children were looked after by numerous relatives including Julia Mary Dowling's daughter Bridie Maher (1st cousin).
Brother Thomas left the Country for England lying about his age to gain employment. Alex followed, at the age of 14 years, to make a living for himself. Donald, his younger brother born just after his mother's admittance into hospital, would also follow in time.
At one time Alex was employed as a barman at the Pier View Hotel, Shanklin in the Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England. This was followed, in between visits home to Ireland, by employment again as a barman, at the Marine Hotel in the same town during 1938.

Alex then moved to London where he worked as a barman until 1942.
During the Second World War Alex, now 23 years old, returned to Ireland and joined the neutral Irish Army. In Ireland the World War was often referred to as the 'Emergency in Ireland'. E/407163 Trooper Dowling. A., was engaged in the Irish First Motor Squadron Cavalry Corps as a motor cyclist carrying despatches (qualified as an Advanced Motor Cyclist on 8th January 1944 and Form Truck and Combat Cars on 29th January 1945)). During that time, according to Bridie Maher (daughter of Julia Mary Dowling), Alex was billeted at Aherlow Castle, a fine old castle 2 miles from Bansha, County Tipperary. He spent some time with Bridie's family in Bansha often calling to see Julia Mary.
The war ended in 1945 and Alex came back to England, to Ramsgate in Kent, where he became a barman at the Royal Oak Public House on the seafront owned by Mr & Mrs Hames. Here he met Elizabeth (Betty) Davies who was working as a waitress. Betty, born on 17th May 1929, had come from Clee Hill, near Kidderminster in Shropshire. Alex never collected his medal for his Irish Emergency Period service. In 2019 his son Brian acquired some paperwork which allowed him to obtain his medal, the 'An Forsa Cosanta Aituil', This applied to the reserve defence forces. Known as the Local Defence Force abbreviated to LDF also FCA after the initials of Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil. A part time force set up to take the place of the regular army when required. The medal was awarded for 2 years service with a 1939-1946 service bar add for each further 2 years of service up to a maximum of 2 bars.
The earlier issue of this medal had a ribbon with a single white stripe which was later changed to a double white stripe.
Alex, aged 28 years of the Royal Oak Hotel, and Betty, aged 19 years of 22 Brunswick Street, Ramsgate, were married on 20th November 1947. Brother Thomas was Best Man, the other witnesses were Maureen Joan Yates and Eve Violet Ansell. The wedding took place at St. Augustines Abbey, Ramsgate. From the church they went to their first address at 6 North Avenue, Ramsgate.
Later they bought a small house on the seafront at 2 York Terrace, (now demolished), and set up a bed & breakfast business while Alex carried on working at the Royal Oak.

Michael, as he is called, and Brian were born at York Terrace. The two boys slept on 'bunk beds' in an upstairs room overlooking Ramsgate Harbour. Whilst at this address Alex took employment at the United States Air Force Base 406th Tactical Division, at Manston, Kent., as barman. Here he became a popular character in the officer's mess.
Shortly after the death of his mother, Mary Burke in 1958, Alex and family moved to a semi-detached house at 47 Station Road by Ramsgate Railway Station. Whilst here Alex was employed at the power station in Richborough in the works canteen. Times were so bad here, whilst Alex was saving, Brian remembers that on one Christmas Alex came home with a present which consisted only of "Milky Way" chocolate. It was a warm house with standard roses in the front and an old 'Anderson Shelter' in the back.
Son, Michael, remembers an incident around 1959 where his Dad and Mum in their Morris Minor were visiting Betty's home in Shropshire and had an accident in Clee Hill in winter snow. The car turned over into a ditch. Michael was in the car although Brian, about 4 years old, does not recall this. Michael says that Alex got out and got a tractor to pull us out. They were on the way home and fairly near 2 Ludlow Road in deep snow. Alex's work at Richborough proved most unsuitable and in 1960, when Alex was aged 41 years, he became the self employed landlord of a public house of his own.
The YORK ARMS public house, 35 King Street, Ramsgate, had its own accommodation and a large bar. They would often employ entertainers who would play in the bar. Whilst here Mark and Nadine (or Jean) were born. Between opening times Alex and Betty would often take the children down onto the beach.
Trade here, although good in the summer season, was slack during the winter and Alex was attracted back to London where business was brisker.
The family sold up in 1969 and moved to temporary accommodation in 72 Watling Street, Stroud, Kent. They kept the money made from the sale of the pub separate and Alex was unemployed for a year while waiting for an opening. Whilst here James was born in nearby Chatham Hospital.
Towards the end of 1969 Alex, now aged 50 years, took over another public house in London. The PRINCE ALBERT, 37 Wharfdale Road, Kings Cross, London N1. Was a good business all year round and improved considerably under Alex' ownership, many of the customers enjoyed his cantankerous sense of humour. Betty would often tell him off for being rude but the customers always laughed it off and came back for more! The Albert, with disco dances in the cellar and meetings in the hall, kept the family well and comfortable. So much so that Alex and Betty bought a second home at 29 Park Road, Bromley, Kent. Alex retired there aged 65 years.
Alex smoked tobacco in a pipe and enjoyed a drink of whiskey. He collected curios, coins and medals, many of them donated by customers in his pubs. and enjoyed gardening.
Alex died on the 15th September 1992 when his heart gave way as he way gardening in the front of his house at Bromley. The ambulance took the better part of an hour to arrive but to no avail as the condition of his heart was too weak. He is buried locally Plaistow Cemetery (plot 151/E). His stone carries his photograph.

Alex Dowling's pocket watches, one gold half-hunter and one in silver. He often wore a wastecoat with one of them in the pocket and the chain draped across to the button hole. In the possession of Brian Thomas Dowling (1955-), the gold one was worn by Richard Dowling at his wedding.

Citation Detail: Award: Ireland - Republic of: Emergency Service Medal 1939-1946, with Defence Forces ‘Na Forsai Cosanta’ reverse, complete with ‘Seirbís Náisiúnta’ top bar,
Citation Text: The medal was instituted on 6 October 1944 to reward service during World War II, referred to in Ireland as the ‘Emergency Period’, Ireland remaining neutral but vigilant. The medal had eleven variations of the reverse for different service units. This example is for members of the full-time Defence Forces, comprising the Army, Air Corps and Navy. A minimum of two years’ service was required to gain this medal and the ‘1939 - 1946’ bar was awarded for an additional two years’ service. In practice, it was not until 1947 that the medal was manufactured and distributed.AwardMedal-Dowling-Alexander-Na-Forsai-Consanta-Aitiuil-bar-Front and back: An Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil The reserve defence forces. Known as the Local Defence Force abbreviated to LDF also FCA after the initials of Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil. A part time force set up to take the place of the regular army when required. The medal was awarded for 2 years service with a 1939-1946 service bar add for each further 2 years of service up to a maximum of 2 bars. Anthony was born on 8 June 1873 in Knockanina, near Mountrath, Queen's County in Ireland. His Father was Michael Doolan a farmer of Knockanina and his mother Anne Carroll was from Sconce. Catherine Carroll who informed the registrar was present at the birth.
Anthony was shown as living at home, in Knockanina, on the night of 31st March 1901 in the Census. He is shown as 24 years of age (this is believed to be incorrect as it would make him born in 1877). The census shows him as a farmer who can Read & Write, speaking English as opposed to Irish. Born in Knockanina.
On 3rd October 1912 he married Elizabeth Moore from Killenure at the Church of Camross, Coolrain, Mountmellick, Queen's County, Ireland. They had five children: Anne, Anthony, Philomena, Michael James and Patrick.
Apparently 'drew' stones to build his own house in Knockanina.
He died aged 83 years old and was buried in the family grave at Clonenagh. No stone there can be found but a memorial was laid at nearby Mountrath Cemetery.

Betty DOWLING nee DAVIES was the eleventh of thirteen children born to Sydney James DAVIES and Elizabeth JONES.
Betty, as Christened, was born at home at 2 Ludlow Road, Bitterley, on Clee Hill near Ludlow at 4:30 pm 17th May 1928 with her twin brother Walter. This was a large house with whitewashed walls on the outside. The family shared rooms because, although the house was large, the grandparents also resided there for years. In the main room was a range for cooking. Heating was by coal and toilet facilities, consisting of a plank with two holes over buckets, were about 50 metres down the garden!
Betty said, "My earliest memory was of my mother having another daughter who died very soon after at Christmas... too pretty to live. We were not allowed to go to the funeral. She was so pretty". (Murial Vera was born and died in 1934 when Betty's mother was aged 47 and Betty aged 7)."
"Most of the time when I was young the boys (brothers) were away working or at the war. Dad would walk everyday to the Duestone Quarry, quite a long way. There were a lot of men working in the quarry and Dad was in charge (hewing duestone granite stone for road and railways). He was up at 4 in the morning and back at 6 pm. He would let off the explosives and work all week except Sunday. He'd work half day on Saturday, finish at 2 pm and then he'd pop in the pub for an hour with the men. He did well really because he worked and also kept the garden with vegetables. We'd really only see him on the Sunday when he'd take us for a walk and we would dip the sheep on the Sunday's too, a three mile walk all the way. He had many dozens of sheep then, hundreds of them grazing on seven fields. In the winter he'd change them over and put them in a warmer spot. Dad would move them around so he could mow the other fields. Sometimes he'd rent out fields if he needed more fields if the sheep needed more grass. All of us would herd the sheep down the main road, Walter, me and Len, whoever was there, would follow the sheep moving them on and bringing them back - this was our morning out - shouting, "Shoo, shoo" and waving a stick! Although it was quieter than now we had to watch out for traffic.
"Sometimes we would go in a cart and horse and go out for a good hour and a half for a morning out. There would be a pub and I'd have a bag of crisps and a drink of home made lemonade. Our horse would be kept in the fields on the Hill and it's cart was kept by the hay barn. It was an open cart with seats facing front and a board at the back for carrying things. Dad couldn't use it to go to work at the quarry because the journey was too steep for the horse but he would walk it."
"They never worked at the quarry on Christmas day because on one day, when they did, about eight quarrymen died in an explosion. It was dreadful there were lots killed including young ones. Walter and me would go and see Dad for half an hour, but you couldn't hang around too much as they were so busy and dad would say, "Keep away, keep away," as it was so dangerous. We would watch little explosions if we were near but they wouldn't let us near anything large. Despite the dirty job my dad was always clean and tidy. He had one 'best suit' for Sunday. At work he'd have a bit of dust on him but he kept himself tidier than others. After the Christmas deaths at the quarry, which was close to the rail line, they worried about children near large explosions. This included never letting us near the railway stone wagons which I never ever saw move again."
"About seven or eight of us would go around the surrounding country together. Once we had some wine, "Go on have one" they said, but it made me feel so ill I never wanted it again, I must have been about 10 or 11 years old then. We'd go around Knowbury, Cainham or up to Clee Hill. We'd sit in cemeteries when one of us had a relative... it was just a place to go."
"My father, Sydney James DAVIES (1886-1968), was a strict disciplinarian. He would want the girls and boys to be indoors by a certain time and would be waiting for them at the gate. If they were late he would hit them with his belt just hard enough to make a point; it never really did us any harm and probably kept them out of more trouble."
"I went to Clee Hill School, it was alright... nothing special. We, the group of girls I knew from the school, would often go down to Ludlow. We'd tease the boys and just play around. On Tuesday, when not at school, I would often go with my mum down to Ludlow to the auction. The auction would be second hand things including clothes, blouses for school or jumpers... anything nice. Food was cheaper in Ludlow than on the Hill, mum and I would have a couple of plums or pears when we were down there. We didn't have the money to eat in restaurants then."
(1939) "The war started while I was still at school, but I was sent to my sister Evelyn's in Gloucestershire for several months to keep me safe and as company for Evelyn who was on her own as her husband was away at the war. After I had come back, Evelyn was attacked by a stranger and badly injured and in hospital for a good while. Mum went down there with Aunty Ann and Ann stayed with here for a while. Much later, after Evelyn's husband died, she died shortly after. Evelyn and Ron adopted a son because he couldn't have children."
"During the 'Blitz' we could see Birmingham being bombed from the Hill, it lit up the sky for miles around. In the war we were rationed and had ration books but dad always had plenty of food from the garden and the lamb from the field. Dad would tell-off my mum for giving too much away! In about 1942, when I was 14 or 15 years old, I left the Clee Hill School and went to work, by bus, in nearby Ludlow.
"My first job was working in a dress shop for just pence per week. This first job was made worse as the employers expected me to clean house after the shop closed for the day. When I brought my wages home they immediately went into the 'pot' at home to be spent on food for the whole family. The boys did the same before they joined up for the war At one point I started using an old bicycle for the long journey to save on bus fares. It was my own bicycle and I used to polish it regularly."
"One day a small rickety bus pulled-up outside the house on Clee Hill and three evacuee children, from tall to small, were delivered from Birmingham dressed in rags and with nothing but the evacuation tags and gas masks around their necks! My goodness the poor children were so dirty, my mum dragged in our galvanised bath and had to scrub them down. They had hardly eaten and were desperate for the food we gave. We burned their stinking rags and mum went around neighbours to find extra clothes to go with those we gave them. They were with us for many weeks and mum looked after them as if they were our own. They never spoke much, I often wonder what happened to them."
"I worked in a couple of shops but having heard that wages were better elsewhere I took a job in a fruit canning factory in Tenbury about 5 miles on the bus. Canning all sorts of things, I was well-in with the bosses son. I would be operating machines to put labels on, or packing the tins or putting tins in boxes. There was plenty to do and it was non-stop. They were nice to me but I got back to Clee Hill at about 7 pm and then had to walk home. I also used the bicycle to save money but coming home was all up a big hill."
"The war was getting worse and I then started working in the local munitions factory, this would have been 1943 or 1944. I was up at 4 am and would leave the house to catch the 5:30 am bus and not get home until 8 or 9 o'clock in the evening. The driver and every one else were under strict orders to not tell us where the factory was as "Careless Talk Costs Lives". So, for all the time I did there I never knew where we were but it was a fair distance from Clee Hill (believed to have been Ditton Priors near Cleobury North). Whilst at work I would handle bombs and shells stencilling the sides and packing them in cases. Sending them different places abroad. I would be moving shells of different sizes but mostly about 2 ft 6" long. We had to fix them up and attach bits to them (detonators) and then we'd box them. People were working there from all around the area, there would always be a bus load. It didn't pay well and I remember that I would barely have enough money for the bus to Ludlow to go to the cinema after the family amount was taken off us. My brothers were in the Army, Len and Fred were in France, our Sidney was shot in training by his best friend and paralysed for life. My twin Walter was abroad in many different hot countries and would send me details of men to meet! He'd say, "You'd like this one, write to him." We did write but they often wanted to meet me."
"My friends at the Munitions Factory, all girls, and I would write notes, "To the Soldiers on the front" offering them someone to write to and include a pen and paper, which the soldiers had trouble getting hold of. Some did write back and one got particularly serious and wanted to meet me! All the arrangements were made... but I was young and I got 'cold feet' and failed to turn up!"
"My brother Fred's best friend got killed in the war, Fred was upset about it for a long time. Len came home from the war with a Dutch bride too... he was a one for the ladies that Len. My brothers got good money in the army and learned a trade. At home we never had a radio, my mum would buzz-off to listen to someone else's and tell us the news later. She'd say they (my brothers are alright)... she found out somehow! Of course we were worried, but you'd take it on the chin, they'd got a job and, on Clee Hill, that was a most important thing. My mum and ex-army dad encouraged them to join, so they volunteered."
"I would only have Saturday off and we'd go to Ludlow, about 5 or 6 miles, and you would have to be ready for the last bus to get back. No one was out later than 11 pm for the one night. Ludlow used to be good at one time, you could go on the boat on the water to pass the day or roam the streets. At home we didn't have a washing machine but we washed all our clothes by hand, and we'd get our best clothes together to go to a dance on Clee Hill but mum would come with us to watch us! There would be big bands and they'd play the American favourites. They were no big stars coming to Ludlow but they sounded good and we danced and danced. If mum didn't come we couldn't go, dad would say, "You never know whose on the road!""
"Work was never good around Clee Hill and when the war ended and soldiers came home it was even worse. Around the end of the war in 1945, aged about 17 years, as work was sparse in the local area, I left for Ramsgate in Kent where Uncle Jack lived. In Ramsgate, I stayed with Aunt Annie at Brunswick Avenue and with my sister Mildred, she was a clippy on the buses and also worked in the shops there. Next door was uncle Jack, my favourite uncle on my mother's side. Aunt Annie owned a boarding house and, realising that conditions were better here than at home on the Hill, I decided to find work as a waitress and stay. In the summer when there were guests Mildred and I would sleep in the back summerhouse, more of a shed that looked like a beach hut, to the rear of the premises so that visitors to Ramsgate could rent the rooms. "
"Uncle Jack, nearby, who was once married in Birmingham, had no children but was then living with another woman in Ramsgate. He got ill and I always went up to see him with food but he passed away shortly afterwards. He was really nice and would help me in any way he could, he left me his ring, which I gave many years later to Jamie." (son James Edward Dowling).
"Around 1946 (possibly nearer 1948) Mildred got ill with tuberculosis and was coughing badly, I stayed with her as she went though hell for a while. She wouldn't go to hospital because she didn't like them. I caught it off her and I got a 'spot' on the lung and had to go to hospital near London about an hour from Ramsgate. I was in there for six months receiving treatment including while they 'dropped my lung' an operation to remove the damaged lung. We, the other patients and I, were kept out in the cold fresh air. My friend had it on two lungs and died, others died too.... mine was caught early and I had the six months and was allowed to leave. When I went in hospital Midred, still ill, went home to Clee Hill for mum to look after her. Dad and mum built an outside shed with windows for Mildred to be outside in the cool air. I went home for a day to see her and she was coughing terribly, not eating and not sleeping. I went back to work in Ramsgate and Mildred died aged about 29 in 1949."
"Obese Auntie Annie was good to me but her daughter, Gwinneth, was really mean to me begrudging me food, Annie's other daughter Mary was friendly. (The house, in 2009, no longer stands being replaced by a car park). My older brother Fred lived nearby in Ramsgate too, he'd been in the war and was married to 'our' Elsie. He'd come from Gloucester because I was in Ramsgate and there was work."
"I managed to get a job as a waitress in the prestigious Royal Oak Hotel on the seafront and it was here I met your father (Alex Dowling 1919-1992) he was a very young barman at the Hotel. He was drinking a bit heavily and I was seeing other 'fellers'. Alex wanted to be with me but I told him I wouldn't unless he stopped drinking. He said he'd stop drinking and he did. The employers at the Royal Oak cut my pay so I went and waitressed in The Castle next door who paid more... and took some customers with me!"
"After a short courtship Alex and I were married in St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Abbey, Ramsgate on 20 November 1947. I really wasn't sure about this and we drove around a second time before I could go in. Uncle Bill Kenhard, Annie's husband, gave me away."
"After the marriage we moved into Winifred Road for a short time, I was a housewife setting up the home. Then we took over our own boarding house on the seafront at 2 York Terrace, Ramsgate (now demolished for a large Hotel) and we had cards printed up with just my name on them: "Betty Dowling - Landlady." Alex kept his job as barman at the Royal Oak Hotel for a while to make ends meet."
"Alex eventually stopped working at the hotel because he got a better paid job on the Manston United States Air Force base where he started drinking again. The Americans left and the job ended. They asked him to go with them but he turned them down. Alex then took a job on the Power Station building site at Richborough near Sandwich."
"I used to enjoy needlework making table cloths with elaborate embroidery on them. I liked cooking, everyone seems to like my apple pie. I like going out to shows, cinema or theatre, I suppose its because there wasn't a lot to do as a child on the Hill."
"Michael, (first son, Alexander Michael (used the name Michael)), was born in Ramsgate Hospital on 13th July 1950. Nearly five years later came Brian (Brian Thomas) born on 13th August 1955 also in Ramsgate Hospital . We would put them both outside York Terrace in their prams to sleep in the fresh sea air. Our B&B (Bed and Breakfast hotel) looked out over Ramsgate Harbour and you could see all the light displays from our window ."
"We the rented a house at Station Approach Road across from Ramsgate Railway Station (with its own Anderson Shelter) for a short time while we used our savings to buy our own public house - The York Arms, (35 King Street, Ramsgate). Here we had two more children, Mark Donald born on 17th July 1961, and Nadine Elizabeth (used the name Jean) born on 28th July 1964, both born in Ramsgate Hospital."
"Business at the York Arms was generally good to start with and for a short time we were able to employ staff. We would hire entertainment all year 'round including Scots bands, Country and Western groups, singers and all sorts. New Year's Eve had a big band and we'd be dancing in a circle in the street holding hands and singing old lang syne! But Ramsgate went into decline and, as trade was seasonal, it was often poor in the winter. We would have to make the money from the tourists in summer last the year but they were good times. Eventually, we moved up to a house in Stroud near Rochester whilst Alex waited for a better position. While living in Stroud James Edward was born in Chatham Hospital on 20th February 1969."
"The family then moved to The 'Prince Albert' (Public House, 37 Wharfdale Road, Kings Cross, London N1). Here I started again as pub landlady, housewife and mother. Very busy and neither of us had much time to ourselves. Alex and I struggled with the local trade who spent little but built up a lot of business customers during the day and early evening. When the 'gay scene' came to the pub for discos the amount they spent was unbelievable and trouble free compared to others. We saved up and managed to buy a nice house at 29 Park Road, Bromley, Kent and when Alex was 65 we packed-up the pub and retired there in 1984 or 85. The doctors had told us that Alex needed to retire and stay away from the alcohol or he would die soon, even if he stopped his liver was so bad he may only live five or six years... they were right."
"It was not long before Alex died of a heart attack in the front garden in 1992 and I was on my own. We had moved to Bromley because Michael was down that way originally but he moved-off to Bournemouth. I stayed at Bromley with Jamie living-in. I used to go window shopping around Bromley town which was a good shopping centre. Jean bought a new house In Kings Hill and eventually so did James, so seven years later I moved down to a newly built three bedroom detached house (at 42 Anson Avenue, King's Hill, West Malling, Kent). Eventually, Jean moved-in across the road and I looked after her sons Alex and Carlo while there. It is a very quiet road and I may see no one all day when Jean is out to work."
Betty had deteriorating health starting in 2003 with a stent to reduce blocked arteries. From 2012, Betty's memory gradually started to deteriorate along with her confidence and mobility. She said, "It was 2013, I had dreadful problems with my knee which caused a lot of pain, Jamie helped sort this out with a doctor he knew but it was never the same again. Now (2015) going out is so much more difficult than before so I can't even go out as much as I would like... if no one takes me out I don't go anywhere." Jean, across the road would look-in on mum regularly and Betty would receive family visits, but a busy former pub landlady would probably acutely notice the quiet on the times no one was around.
In 2020, when the corona virus pandemic struck, Betty was already feeling isolated and by mid-summer it was clear she needed to be cared-for and from the autumn spent alternate four-week stays with son's Mark and Brian. She never caught coronavirus but probably suffered the impact of reduced professional medical attention from doctors over that time which would be a time she needed their attention more. Her little house was sold in April 2021 as she enjoyed the new company, regular meals and attention as old age started it's swift exponential decline.
Following a cheerful Christmas, New Year and spring, a small bump on the arm, from two years ago, grew large and was diagnosed as a malignant tumour, she started to have periods of delirium from infections caused by gradual kidney failure and transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes). One day a faint caused a fall and hospitalisation for a broken femur and a month or so later Betty went by ambulance from Watford Hospital to Pilgrims Hospice in Ashford in her, now, home county of Kent. Betty had family visits every day until she passed away without pain just after midnight on 25 August 2021.

In the summer when there were guests Mildred and I would sleep in the back summerhouse, more of a shed that looked like a beach hut, to the rear of the premises so that visitors to Ramsgate could rent the rooms. "
"Uncle Jack, nearby, who was once married in Birmingham, had no children but was then living with another woman in Ramsgate. He got ill and I always went up to see him with food but he passed away shortly afterwards. He was really nice and would help me in any way he could, he left me his ring, which I gave many years later to Jamie." (son James Edward Dowling).
"Around 1946 (possibly nearer 1948) Mildred got ill with tuberculosis and was coughing badly, I stayed with her as she went though hell for a while. She wouldn't go to hospital because she didn't like them. I caught it off her and I got a 'spot' on the lung and had to go to hospital near London about an hour from Ramsgate. I was in there for six months receiving treatment including while they 'dropped my lung' an operation to remove the damaged lung. We, the other patients and I, were kept out in the cold fresh air. My friend had it on two lungs and died, others died too.... mine was caught early and I had the six months and was allowed to leave. When I went in hospital Midred, still ill, went home to Clee Hill for mum to look after her. Dad and mum built an outside shed with windows for Mildred to be outside in the cool air. I went home for a day to see her and she was coughing terribly, not eating and not sleeping. I went back to work in Ramsgate and Mildred died aged about 29 in 1949."
"Obese Auntie Annie was good to me but her daughter, Gwinneth, was really mean to me begrudging me food, Annie's other daughter Mary was friendly. (The house, in 2009, no longer stands being replaced by a car park). My older brother Fred lived nearby in Ramsgate too, he'd been in the war and was married to 'our' Elsie. He'd come from Gloucester because I was in Ramsgate and there was work."
"I managed to get a job as a waitress in the prestigious Royal Oak Hotel on the seafront and it was here I met your father (Alex Dowling 1919-1992) he was a very young barman at the Hotel. He was drinking a bit heavily and I was seeing other 'fellers'. Alex wanted to be with me but I told him I wouldn't unless he stopped drinking. He said he'd stop drinking and he did. The employers at the Royal Oak cut my pay so I went and waitressed in The Castle next door who paid more... and took some customers with me!"
"After a short courtship Alex and I were married in St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Abbey, Ramsgate on 20 November 1947. I really wasn't sure about this and we drove around a second time before I could go in. Uncle Bill Kenhard, Annie's husband, gave me away."
"After the marriage we moved into Winifred Road for a short time, I was a housewife setting up the home. Then we took over our own boarding house on the seafront at 2 York Terrace, Ramsgate (now demolished for a large Hotel) and we had cards printed up with just my name on them: "Betty Dowling - Landlady." Alex kept his job as barman at the Royal Oak Hotel for a while to make ends meet."
"Alex eventually stopped working at the hotel because he got a better paid job on the Manston United States Air Force base where he started drinking again. The Americans left and the job ended. They asked him to go with them but he turned them down. Alex then took a job on the Power Station building site at Richborough near Sandwich."
"I used to enjoy needlework making table cloths with elaborate embroidery on them. I liked cooking, everyone seems to like my apple pie. I like going out to shows, cinema or theatre, I suppose its because there wasn't a lot to do as a child on the Hill."
"Michael, (first son, Alexander Michael (used the name Michael)), was born in Ramsgate Hospital on 13th July 1950. Nearly five years later came Brian (Brian Thomas) born on 13th August 1955 also in Ramsgate Hospital . We would put them both outside York Terrace in their prams to sleep in the fresh sea air. Our B&B (Bed and Breakfast hotel) looked out over Ramsgate Harbour and you could see all the light displays from our window ."
"We the rented a house at Station Approach Road across from Ramsgate Railway Station (with its own Anderson Shelter) for a short time while we used our savings to buy our own public house - The York Arms, (35 King Street, Ramsgate). Here we had two more children, Mark Donald born on 17th July 1961, and Nadine Elizabeth (used the name Jean) born on 28th July 1964, both born in Ramsgate Hospital."
"Business at the York Arms was generally good to start with and for a short time we were able to employ staff. We would hire entertainment all year 'round including Scots bands, Country and Western groups, singers and all sorts. New Year's Eve had a big band and we'd be dancing in a circle in the street holding hands and singing old lang syne! But Ramsgate went into decline and, as trade was seasonal, it was often poor in the winter. We would have to make the money from the tourists in summer last the year but they were good times. Eventually, we moved up to a house in Stroud near Rochester whilst Alex waited for a better position. While living in Stroud James Edward was born in Chatham Hospital on 20th February 1969."
"The family then moved to The 'Prince Albert' (Public House, 37 Wharfdale Road, Kings Cross, London N1). Here I started again as pub landlady, housewife and mother. Very busy and neither of us had much time to ourselves. Alex and I struggled with the local trade who spent little but built up a lot of business customers during the day and early evening. When the 'gay scene' came to the pub for discos the amount they spent was unbelievable and trouble free compared to others. We saved up and managed to buy a nice house at 29 Park Road, Bromley, Kent and when Alex was 65 we packed-up the pub and retired there in 1984 or 85. The doctors had told us that Alex needed to retire and stay away from the alcohol or he would die soon, even if he stopped his liver was so bad he may only live five or six years... they were right."
"It was not long before Alex died of a heart attack in the front garden in 1992 and I was on my own. We had moved to Bromley because Michael was down that way originally but he moved-off to Bournemouth. I stayed at Bromley with Jamie living-in. I used to go window shopping around Bromley town which was a good shopping centre. Jean bought a new house In Kings Hill and eventually so did James, so seven years later I moved down to a newly built three bedroom detached house (at 42 Anson Avenue, King's Hill, West Malling, Kent). Eventually, Jean moved-in across the road and I looked after her sons Alex and Carlo while there. It is a very quiet road and I may see no one all day when Jean is out to work."
Betty had deteriorating health starting in 2003 with a stent to reduce blocked arteries. From 2012, Betty's memory gradually started to deteriorate along with her confidence and mobility. She said, "It was 2013, I had dreadful problems with my knee which caused a lot of pain, Jamie helped sort this out with a doctor he knew but it was never the same again. Now (2015) going out is so much more difficult than before so I can't even go out as much as I would like... if no one takes me out I don't go anywhere." Jean, across the road would look-in on mum regularly and Betty would receive family visits, but a busy former pub landlady would probably acutely notice the quiet on the times no one was around.
In 2020, when the corona virus pandemic struck, Betty was already feeling isolated and by mid-summer it was clear she needed to be cared-for and from the autumn spent alternate four-week stays with son's Mark and Brian. She never caught coronavirus but probably suffered the impact of reduced professional medical attention from doctors over that time which would be a time she needed their attention more. Her little house was sold in April 2021 as she enjoyed the new company, regular meals and attention as old age started it's swift exponential decline.
Following a cheerful Christmas, New Year and spring, a small bump on the arm, from two years ago, grew large and was diagnosed as a malignant tumour, she started to have periods of delirium from infections caused by gradual kidney failure and transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes). One day a faint caused a fall and hospitalisation for a broken femur and a month or so later Betty went by ambulance from Watford Hospital to Pilgrims Hospice in Ashford in her, now, home county of Kent. Betty had family visits every day until she passed away without pain just after midnight on 25 August 2021.

Oral information from Betty Dowling:
Sidney, as it is occasionally spelt, lived in the house on Clee Hill, at No. 2 Ludlow Road, Bitterley, Ludlow on Clee Hill, this was later handed down to him by his mother. The family kept a Bible of relatives but this is currently lost. He had at least one sister, Annie who lived in Ludlow with her husband who was a butcher, and a half-brother. In his late teens Sydney joined the Army and served abroad.
Sydney joined the Welsh Regiment as a Private 10408. His entered France, his first 'Theatre of War', on 18 January 1915. He received the:
Victory Medal. The Victory Medal 1914-1919 was awarded to all eligible personnel who served on the establishment of a unit in an operational theatre.
British War Medal. The British War Medal 1914-1920was awared as Sydney must have entered a theatre of war, or rendered approved service overseas between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Service in Russia in 1919 and 1920 also qualified for the award.
1914/1915 Star. This was awarded to those individuals who saw service in France and Flanders from 23 November 1914 to 31 December 1915, and to those individuals who saw service in any other operational theatre from 5 August 1914 to 31 December 1915.
Additionally Sydney is shown to have been awarded the Silver War Badge. The Silver War Badge (SWB), sometimes erroneously called the Silver Wound Badge, was authorised in September 1916 and takes the form of a circular badge with the legend "For King and Empire-Services Rendered" surrounding the George V cypher. The badge was awarded to all of those military personnel who were discharged as a result of sickness or wounds contracted or received during the war, either at home or overseas. Sydney was discharged 11 August 1917, aged 31 years.
While in-service Sydney contracted Malaria, a disease that was to periodically re-occur for the rest of his life. It is likely that his service was distinguished as his daughter, Betty, remembers that he had a lot of medals. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Nothing is known about Sydney's first marriage other than there were no offspring.
On leaving the army he moved to Wales where, it is believed he married Elizabeth Jones from Tenbury near Ludlow. However, Elizabeth became ill and they moved back to Shropshire.
They had several children including
1. Edith Maria on 21 November 1908
2. Paul who died shortly after birth.
3. Muriel
4. Peter
5. Eveline on 14 October 1913 in Wales;
6. Sydney James
7. Leonard
8. Fred who was born at Scotts Lane, Cainham, Ludlow Shropshire on 19th June 1921.
9. Dorethy
10. Mildred
11. Betty and
12. Walter who were twins born at 2 Ludlow Road, Bitterly, Ludlow, Shropshire on 17th May 1928.
13. Muriel Vera on 6 May 1934.
The couple then continued to live at no. 2 Ludlow Road, Clee Hill. The family were very poor surviving on there own home grown food and what they could make by selling produce. They kept sheep and a few cows on the Hill which at the time was common land.
Sydney took employment as a stone quarryman at Dhustone Quarry on Titterstone and Clee Hill and would walk to work where he would blast the stone with dynamite. Soon he became a foreman and paymaster at the works which specialised in a granite for aggregates in hard surfaces.
Sydney was a tall man, over six feet, and regularly wore a cloth cap. Not wealthy he had only one suit which was immaculate as it only came out of its wrappings for special occasions.
Sydney died in Ludlow hospital "aged 80(or 82) years". His address was given as 23 Curdale Close, Cleobury Mortimer. The informant was his son Walter DAVIES.
Sydney's house on Clee Hill, in very poor condition, was bought by daughter Betty and her husband Alex and demolished. It was replaced with a new house as a second home for them when they visited Betty's home but, they sold it as it was regularly burgled in their absence. This 25 Apr 1921 census appears to have actually been taken on 21 Jun 1921.13

Family History Monthly - May 1997: It is unlikely that all 'Stephens' are related as the name, and variations on it such as Stephenson, is a patronymic. This means 'son of Stephen' Stephen being taken from the Greek 'Stephanos', meaning 'crown'. It was the name of the first Christian martyr, stoned to death at Jerusalem three years after the death of Christ. It became a popular name throughout Christendom in the Middle Ages, and consequently, it's the root of many European surnames today.
The martyr Stephen was described in Acts as a man "full of faith and power" doing "great wonders and miracles among the people". His name was given to ten popes before the 12th century, one English king, and several European rulers during the Middle Ages, all of which recommended the name to ordinary people.
The name Stephens and its variants was introduced to Britain with the Normans. Gloucestershire records show a family descended from FitzStephen, a Breton Knight who descended from Count Stephen of Brittany, and accompanied William the Conqueror to England for the Battle of Hastings.
Names connected with the 'Stephen' root include Stimson, Stibbs, Stebbing, Stepkin, Stiff, and perhaps also Stubbs, Steff, and Stennet. A Scottish variant is Stiven, which arose at the beginning of the 19th century.

Siblings: Edward, Daniel Joseph, John Christopher, Thomas, Julia May and Elizabeth.
Michael was shown as living at home, in Dysartbeagh, on the night of 31st March 1901 in the Census. He is shown as 10 years of age. The census shows him as an unmarried Roman Catholic 'Scholar' who can Read & Write, speaking English as opposed to Irish.
Children: Brideen, Thomas, Attracta, Michael, John Joseph, Patrick, Eamon, Ita, Bernadette and Joseph.
After working sometime, for a P.A. Meehan, Michael owned and ran a Public House and Butchers at 44/45 O'Moore Street, Mountmellick. This was handed down to his sons Eamon and Michael respectively.
There is a story told by his son Michael, or Mikie as he was called, of an incident that happened in 1912 two years after his father's death (this seems a little at odds with estimated dates of children). Mikie went to bed with a candle lit by his bedside. Apparently the candle burned down and as it did so managed to set the bed alight. Mikie asleep could hear his father calling him by name, "Mikie, Mikie, get up!" Michael awoke to his fathers voice to see the face of his father at the window. As Mikie went to the window the face vanished and only then did Mikie turn to see the potentially serious fire in his bed.
It is believed that Michael was an active member of the old Provisional Irish Republican Army (P.I.R.A.) and that he served six months imprisonment in Portlaoise Prison. He was suspected in being involved with a 'tarring and feathering' and acts against the Anglo-Irish Treaty.
Michael died 25 January 1966 the probate of his estate of £2641 was granted to his shopkeeper son Eamon.
