The estimated birth date for Edward Dowling (or Doolan) is around 1810 in the Clonenagh and Clonagheen Parish near Mountrath in Queen's County in Ireland. The Townsland of birth could have been Disertbeagh (the family home that he lived in) or Clonard (where gravestones in Clonenagh show a location of origin for alleged ancestors. I estimate him dying between 1860 to 1870 in Disertbeagh.
-
The Tithes were a Church of Ireland (Protestant) (protestant) tax on one's annual income from farming of about one tenth of the value. Tithe payment was a cause of much civil unrest throughout Ireland at the time. They used to paid 'in kind' but after 1820 were in cash. The Applotment Books showed significant land holders only and the land measurements are in the 'plantation' or 'Irish' acres.

In 1829, according to the Tithe Applotment Book, John Dowling is the only Dowling shown in the family home area of Disertbeagh. John lived on a plot of 2 first class acres, 1 acre and 3 roods of second class land, 2 acres and 3 Roods and 15 poles of third class land, amounting to a tithe of 5 shillings, eleven and three quarter pence. This John could have been Edward's father. Edward being about 20 years old at the time, or a brother who died and left the land to Edward. This would appear to be the land, no doubt with a small house, where this branch of the Dowling family were raised.
-
Edward's siblings are not known exactly but would include John and Bridget. Members of the family have told me they believe one of his brothers fathered a son Michael Dowling (in Laois this is like a statement of the obvious!). ‘Edward’s’ children, according to the memory of Michael Joseph Dowling of Westfields, were:

1st Thomas
2nd Michael
3rd Edward
4th John
5th Julia
6th Kate

The list is in order of age but, at best, he would have been a child at the time of their deaths. This list should be accepted with care as records do not confirm it clearly. These children would have all been born before birth registration which came in, in Ireland, 1 January 1864. No usable censuses are available for this time.

I researched through the Clonenagh and Clonagheen Parish Church Records of Baptisms for Mountrath 1823 to 1880 in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, which cover many townslands including Dysartbeagh. They are difficult to read on microfilm. Part of the problem is atrocious writing by priests and some sections are even missing (many priests did not appear to take record keeping seriously). Some difficulties are also due to poor photography. The records from 13th May 1867 to 26th December 1880 are in tabled registers but often no clearer. Note also that the index to this baptism register at St. Finton’s Church was compiled by schoolchildren and, although a good attempt at deciphering, is not 100% reliable. I also checked the Marriage Register for the same location from 16th August 1867 to 27th July 1880.

The records viewed show a number of Dowling's but at the appropriate times different spellings are used. Below is an abridged transcript of the records which are most likely to refer to relatives (words enclosed in brackets indicate words that were difficult to read). The last pair of names before the location are the "sponsors" often shown "Sps" abbreviated to "//", these are generally the 'God-parents' or Sponsors.:

Locals advise that it is common for Dowling to be misspelled Doolan or Doolin due to the spoken pronunciation of the name. Moreover, Thomas' father was probably illiterate and not in a position to correct the priest’s spelling. I am satisfied that these are our ancestors despite the difference between the above list and the one supplied by Michael Joseph. This is because:

a) the names are close to those expected (note here that when Thomas married Bridget Phelan in Kyle his name was shown as Doolin and this IS definitely my ancestor),

b) the records identify dates at around the correct time. If the Thomas born on 29th October 1843 was the same as our ancestor Thomas who died on 7th March 1910 he would have been 66 years old. That is just what the Death Certificate States.

c) the location for Thomas, and the others above, in the Parish records shows Dysartbeagh as the home location. This is a small place with only a few houses and whilst there may be many Dowling's the odds are against two families of similar names.

Mrs. Anne Kirwen, who I visited on a farm on the Abbeyleix Road out of Mountrath, "remembers the family well." Because she was related to the Kirwans and they in turn were related to the Dowling's she is quite sure that Thomas Dowling's mother was called Julia Mary. Mrs Kirwen was elderly, as well as possessed of a good memory, and it is difficult to confirm her recollection by records. However, what was, possibly, co-incidental was finding out afterwards that Thomas Doolan’s parents were shown as Edward and Julia!

Thomas Dowling (son of Daniel Joseph) recalled no Horan's but did say that the Hogans lived near Mountrath. Of course Julia may be from a different family entirely.

Using the order of children from the Baptism Register and applying the Irish naming convention Edward's father would have been John (as in the Tithe Applotment Books), his mother would have been Bridget, his wife's father was Michael, his wife's mother was Mary and his wife Judith (as stated in these baptism records).

Siblings:
The 'Godparents' shown in the Parish records are traditionally likely to include siblings at some stage. Some females may be sisters with there married names shown although they could equally be sisters of Judy Hogan.

Julia Hogan or Horan is believed to be the wife of Edward (his name is also unconfirmed). Her name came from the Baptism Register at St. Finton's Church for the parish of Clonenagh as mother of Thomas(unconfirmed). Thomas (son of Daniel Joseph) says he remembers that Hogans lived in Clonin.
Although the register contains references to Judy and Horan these are believed to be spelling errors as Horan is an unusual name in the area. Further the name of Julia is passed down to daughters in several branches of the family. Mrs Anne Kirwen, elderly source in 1986, believes her middle name to be Mary but is not
sure.

Julia Dowling worked as a farmer at Dysartbeagh, Queen's County Ireland up to her death as a widow on 6th January 1881. She had suffered Chronic Bronchitis for years and died in the presence of her son Thomas.

Rose (christened Ella Rose COCKING) was born on 28th July 1919 at Mulbery Cottages where her Grandmother lived. Her parents were George William COCKING, a master shoemaker, and Rosanna CHALKLEY. Rose then lived with her with parents at Farm Cottages, Hoggs Norton, Lower Nupend, Old Knebworth from birth until about 1922. Rose was the first child of two, her sister was Margaret (called 'Ciss') born in 1921.

Rose and Ciss, still only babies, then suffered the loss of their mother, Rosanna, in 1922 from peritonitus and double pneumonia. She died aged only 28 years. The two girls were then being looked after by their Grand-mother Adeline NORTH, who had moved in as their father George had himself gone into a sanatorium with tuberculosis.

Rose can remember, or was told, about when her grandmother was discussing with her father George William about going into the sanatorium. In describing it as a terrible place he told of people 'spewing blood up the walls' and that he would not go there again. With the prospect of death Adeline asked what he would do with the girls to which he replied, no doubt suffering from the illness, that "they could go into the workhouse like he would have done."

They then moved to the Mullberry Cottages, Old Knebworth in 1922 when Rose was only 3 years old until about 1924 when their father finally died from the tuberculosis he contracted in the World War One trenches.

They lived with Adeline and Uncle Herbert CHALKLEY at Mulberry Cottages until 1927 when they all moved, with Rose aged 8 years old, to Hayes Farm, Aston, Stevenage. This was because Herbert, a Farm Worker, had to move to keep in employment. For the same reason they moved to 26 Park Lane, Old Knebworth in 1931 when Rose was 12 years old. She could remember playing in the Rectory Lane in Stevenage and watching the 'Flying Scotsman' railway engine as it sped through the village.

Rose and Margaret were often, if not always, dressed alike. Grandmother Adeline used to buy material and take them to a neighbour up the road, Mrs Webb, who was a 'Court Dressmaker' and she would make up dresses for both girls.

Rose's first school was the Church of England School in Old Knebworth after which she attended the Secondary School in Knebworth. Rose remembers that one of her uncles, on the Chalkley side, was a postillion rider on the Queen's Coach and used to come home sometimes with all his fine red livery. Adeline, Rose's grandmother, used to receive 7 shillings and 6 pence from the Royal British Legion to look after the two girls and Rose can remember going to the parties they organised.

On leaving school, aged 14 years, Rose took up employment as a Housemaid. Later when aged 17 years she was employed by a Dutch family as a Housekeeper and General Cook.

World War Two broke out in 1939 and she married her first husband Herbert FARRINGTON but he died a year later of tuberculosis. There were no children from this first marriage and Rose was left with a State Widows Pension of 10 shillings a week.

Shortly after that in 1941, aged 21 years, Rose joined the Women's Royal Air Force as a cook in the Officer's Mess of 11 Operational Training Unit, Basingbourne, Royston, Hertfordshire. She left in 1946 as a Leading Air Woman and was awarded a medal herself for service during 1939/45. At processions she would wear this and, as she was entitled to do so, her father's medals from the previous war.

From 1946 to late 1947 Rose worked at Daintree House, Petworth, Sussex. as a Housemaid.

Rose met Cyril Leonard STEPHENS, an aircraft designer for Fairey Aviation, and went to live with them in Hayes. Cyril's mother, Lily, said, "If you're going to get married you should get a better job." Rose took employment with Quaker Oats (cereal manufacturer) in Southall.

Rose and Cyril were married on 29th March 1952 and lived at 79 Abbey Road, Aylesbury. Here they had two children Pauline born in 1954 and Carole born in 1957.

Rose became a cook for Quarrendon School, Aylesbury and later the local Police Headquarters. For most of her middle life Rose was a Girl Guides Association Guide Leader and "Brown Owl" organising camps and activities for young girls.

She retired to her home at 79 Abbey Road, Aylesbury. Rose (christened Ella Rose COCKING) was born on 28th July 1919 at Mulbery Cottages where her Grandmother lived. Sidney joined the army and was accidently shot in the back by a friend whilst in training in Wales. The friend should have apparently had a safety catch on the weapon. As a result Sydney was paralysed and never walked again and died young about ten years after the accident. This 25 Apr 1921 census appears to have actually been taken on 21 Jun 1921.5

2 1914 - 15 Star

4 Victory Medal

On leaving the Army he became a Drapery Buyer.

Cyril Bertie, aged 34 years, married Lilly Maria GYLBY a 25 year old manager at Selfridge's Store in Oxford Street, London., on 6th February 1921. At the time Cyril gave his address as 31 Dunford Road, Islington.

They had two children Cyril Leonard, born in Highgate on 14th April 1924, and Eric Raymond, born in Hayes on 1st March 1926.

Shortly after Cyril's birth Bertie took employment at "Rouses" Drapers, at West Ealing. He, Lilly and Cyril then moved to Hayes nearby.

Lived in his last years at 77 Yeading lane, Hayes, Middlesex where he died on 3rd March 1962.

The following article is taken from Microsoft Encarta and is a description of the Battle of Ypres. Cyril Bertie STEPHENS was in action in fighting at Passchendaele and suffered the effects of 'mustard gas' for years after.

Ypres, Battle of, name applied to three battles of World War I fought in and around the town of Ypres, Belgium. Throughout the war Ypres was under constant attack as the key point of an Allied salient that blocked a German approach to the English Channel.

First Battle

(October 30-November 24, 1914) The first battle at Ypres took place when outnumbered British, French, and Belgian troops resisted a German offensive aimed at the French ports of Calais and Dunkirk on the English Channel. The offensive, potentially disastrous to the Allied cause, was finally stemmed after 34 days of heavy fighting. The battle resulted in fixed military positions, initiating the long period of trench warfare on the western front.

Second Battle

(April 22-May 25, 1915) The second battle ensued when the Germans carried out an experiment with a new military weapon, poisonous chlorine gas. After five weeks of fighting, a stalemate had been reached, and the Germans brought the battle to an end. German losses totaled about 35,000 officers and men; Allied casualties were about 60,000.

Third Battle

(July 31-November 10, 1917) Known also as the Passchendaele campaign, the third battle of Ypres was precipitated by a massive British offensive directed against enemy installations. In its initial phase the operation succeeded brilliantly. On June 7, 1917, British forces took the strategically important village of Messines, the heights of which commanded miles of German-occupied territory. The second phase of the offensive (July 31-November 10) proved disastrous, however. Prolonged rainfall and heavy Allied bombardment had transformed the battlefield into a swamp, and the Germans, operating from concrete pillboxes, took a heavy toll of Allied troops with mustard gas and machine-gun fire. After months of bitter fighting in deep mud, Canadian infantrymen captured the ruined village of Passchendaele. At this point the Allied command halted the offensive. Allied troops had pushed the German lines back only 8 km (5 MI); each side suffered some 250,000 casualties.

The 1/7th Battalion Middlesex Regiment served with the 167th Brigade, 56th (London) Division. They were on the Somme before the battle and helped dig assembly trenches near Hebuterne. On 1st July 1916 they were in reserve for the attack on Gommecourt. They trained with tanks in August 1916 near Abbeville and fought in the battles for Leuze Wood and Bouleaux Wood in September 1916. In one attack with the tanks on 15th September 1916 they lost over 300 men out of 500 who took part in the attack on ‘Bully Wood’. In October 1916 they fought at Spectrum Trench near Lesboeufs suffering nearly 200 casualties. - https://somme1916.wordpress.com/2015/12/16/middlesex-regiment-on-the-somme/

The Victory Medal (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a United Kingdom and British Empire First World War campaign medal. The design and ribbon was also adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA in accordance with the decision of the Inter-Allied Peace Conference at Versailles (a 'Winged Victory). A particular form of this historic Greek monument was chosen by each nation, except the nations in the Far East who issued the medal but with a different design. The dates of the war were in every case 1914 to 1918, except that of the British Empire, which gave the dates as illustrated (1914 to 1919). The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was not awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Lilly Maria GYLBY was one of eight children. 6 Sisters and 1 brother. She often told that when she was young her parents used to keep her in the Bakery ovens to keep her warm in the winter! They would also go shopping, in Lambourne, by horse and cart.

It is believed she met Bert (Cyril Bertie STEPHENS) through her friend May who was Bert's sister. Cyril Leonard STEPHENS remembers Lilly saying that she ran away from home to get married although the reason is not known. Lilly was to have little contact with her own family for the rest of her life.

Lilly and Bertie were married in St. Barnabus Church in Islington on 6th February 1921. Bertie was 34 years and Lilly was 25 years. Lilly did not State an occupation at the time of marriage but it is believed to have been at Selfridge's Store, Oxford Street, London. She gave her address as 42 Jackson Road. One of the Witnesses to her Wedding is believed to be sister Irene Alice GYLBY.

Lilly lived with Bertie at 77 Yeading lane, Hayes, Middlesex and after his death moves to 143 Carlyon Road, Hayes Middlesex. She stayed here until her frail nineties when Alzheimer's Disease set in and she would leave home and wander around lost being unable to remember her way home.

Son Cyril and his wife Rose were concerned as to her condition and safety and obtained Power of Attorney over her affairs and Lilly moved in with them at 79 Abbey Road, Aylesbury. Later her illness became so severe as to require more professional care and Lilly was admitted to Woodlands Park Home for the Elderly, Wendover Road, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. She lived in this converted country mansion house with virtually constant nursing until her death in 1991. "Civil Defence Services."2

Ernest Albert GYLBY was born on 30th April 1872 probably in Longcot in Berkshire where his father Allen GYLBY was a Schoolmaster (later became a Solicitor). His mother was Maria GYLBY (formerly HULBERT).

Ernest was a Baker by trade probably in Eastbury itself.

Ernest married Annie BISHOP on 28th August 1895 when he was 23 and she was 18 years old. This was in the Parish Church at Eastbury. At the time of the Wedding Annie was expecting her first child who was to be born only nine days later. One can probably imagine the embarrassment felt, particularly by Allen Gylby a Solicitor, as in prudish Victorian times pregnancy outside marriage was considered disgraceful. Nevertheless, there may have been acceptable conditions such as military service or some other event that led to the situation.

She gave birth to Lilly Maria GYLBY on 6th September 1895. But is also considered to have had a much larger family including other daughters: Phyllis Ruby, Stella and Irene Alice (who was a witness at sister Lilly's marriage).

Ernest is shown, at the time of Lilly's marriage in 1921, with an occupation of "Manager". However, he later became a gas fitter and moved to the Surrey area.

Ernest Albert GYLBY died at home at 73 Terrace Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, aged 80 years on 24 April 1953. He died of Bronchopneumonia, Acute Cholecystitis and Angina Pectoris. His daughter Phyllis was the informant.

Rosanna CHALKLEY, born 18th July 1891 in Knebworth, Hertfordshire, was the fourth child of Henry CHALKLEY and Adeline NORTH. She was registered as Rosanna but in subsequent documentation she signed herself as Rose Hanna.

Apparently, Rose Hannah's parents forbade her marriage to George William COCKING as he had tuberculosis which he contracted in the World War One trenches.

They nevertheless married in a Registry Office in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, UK. on 25th May 1918. She gave her age as 27 years and he as 24 years. At the time he was employed as a builder's labourer and she as a general Domestic Servant. George's Residence at the time of Marriage was Handley's Yard, Biggleswade. Rose Hannah's was shown as St. Andrew Street, Biggleswade.

They had two children Ella Rose born in 1919 and Margaret born in 1921.

Tragically Rose died aged 30 years, on 27th January 1922, of a vitamin absorption disorder leading to a fatal form of anaemia. She died in the Cottage Hospital at Welwyn in Hertfordshire. She was shown, in her death certificate, as being of Old Knebworth.
