Thomas was only 11 years old when his father died and only 15 years when he left Ireland to take a job in the licensing trade in London.

During the second World War Thomas served with the British Army seeing active service in Burma. The experiences were of a horrific kind and not readily discussed by Thomas. In one such incident, when Thomas was part of a squad on patrol in the jungle, they came across a large Japanese Army contingent. They decided that as they were grossly outnumbered the safest method to avoid massacre of their squad was to 'play dead'. The Japanese went around the feigning British troops sticking bayonets into them to ensure they were dead. Thomas was stabbed in the leg but amazingly maintained silence and survived to tell with the less glamorous scars of war.

On Christmas Day 1945 he is shown in a photograph, in uniform as corporal, outside the Rosary Church, Kowloon, China (near Hong Kong).

He eventually became the landlord of his own pub
"The Camden Arms" in Camden Town and then
"The City of Rome", 114 Roman Way, Barnsbury, London N7
both in North London. Smartly dressed he regularly wore a "dickie bow" tie. He retired to Searle Place, Evershot Street, Hornsey, North London.

Thomas died in London in 27 March 1990.

Patrick and his brother,Michael James Dowling, explained, personally, to Brian Dowling how they believed their Great-grandfather, this John Dowling, was a brother of Thomas Dowling's father (Edward).

The name of this ancestor is identified from the marriage certificate of his son Michael to Anne Carroll in 1870 and confirmed by an appearance in 1929 on the Tithe Applotment Book for Knockanina (later the family home). However, John is notably missing from the Griffith's Land Valuation for Knockanina around 25 years later.
Siblings: unknown
Children: at least Michael.

The Parish Register for Clonenagh and Clonagheen - Mountrath shows no Michael born to a John Dowling around 1839.
The marriages around the time shown are:

1. 4 March 1832 John? Dowling of Clonard to Magt. Delaney Sponsors: James Cullen and Magt. Delaney.
2. 6 June 1836 John Dowling of C? to Ann Dooley Sponsors: John McEvoy and Mary Brophy
3. 2 May 1839 John Dowling of ? to Mary Dice? Sponsors: Pat. Bergan and Bridget ?

The parish records are poorly written and feint in many cases.

Later Mountrath births show:
Couple 1 as consistently living in Clonard with children: Bridget, John, Dan, Ellen, Martin, Mary, Magt., Cathr., James and Saragh.
Couple 2 are consistently shown as living in Trummera with children John, John, Eliza, Ter, Daniel and John.
Couple 3 are not shown again in the births records.
So, these are unlikely to be identical with this family.

This leads me to believe that this family must be attending church, recording births and marriages elsewhere than Mountrath.
-
John Dowling was a farmer and miller in Knockanina, Queen's County, Ireland. He was probably married and had at least one son Michael. As Michael was born around 1839 his father should have been born before 1823.

During John's time Ireland was under British rule. Around the time of his birth Daniel O'Connell founded the Catholic Association. As a child he may have been aware of relatives leaving home in a major waves of immigration to the United States from 1820 to 1840. The Emancipation Act of 1829 meant the end of some persecution of Catholics. He will probably have been aware that Queen Victoria came to the British throne in 1837.

The Poor Relief laws were enacted in 1838 to little practical effect as a blight on the potato harvest struck the nations staple crop from 1840. The Great Famine was at its worst from 1848 to 1849. He may have lost relatives or friends either to the famine or the next wave of emigration it prompted. Those that did not emigrate were left in a country where dissatisfaction with British and local government erupted into violence. During this time the local newspaper the Leinster Express reports of numerous groups, ravaging Queen's County. The gangs, some with political motivation others for criminal purposes, would break into peoples houses and beat occupants most severely. Property would be stolen and frequently people were murdered. Government response was equally severe and up to 1853 John may have heard about persons being transported to colonies, including Australia, for often quite trivial offences.

Of Clonin.
Siblings: unknown
Children: Mary, one beginning with A and possibly Bridie who was witness to Mary's wedding and possibly was married to J. Fitzpatrick.

Alex owned a shop in Market Square, Mountrath in the early 1900's. He kept a
record book detailing business and customers. (Held by Brian Dowling it has some interesting entries). Alex passed the shop and other tenements on to Daniel (who married his daughter May) as a dowry. Irish tradition was followed and Daniel's second son was named Alexander after him.

Alexander was shown as living at home and Head of the Family, in a Public House (number 4), on the night of 31st March 1901 in the Census. He is shown as 44 years of age. The census shows him as a married, Roman Catholic, Publican and Farmer who can Read & Write, speaking English as opposed to Irish. Born in Queen's County.

The premises is shown in the census as a '2nd class' stone or brick built building, with tiled roof. It had five rooms with six windows to the front. It had four outhouses.

On the night of the census shown at home with Alex were
Mary Burke, Wife, 36 years
Naimie Burke Daughter, 13 years
Mary Burke Daughter, 10 years
Bridget Burke Daughter, 8 years
Margaret Burke Daughter, 7 years
Christine Thompson Servant, 15 years
All were were Roman Catholic, able to Read & Write and born in Queen's County. All apart from Alex's and his wife are shown not married.

Alexander was shown on Mary's marriage certificate to Daniel Dowling as being a farmer and 'alive' on 18th February 1917.

(Burke comes from the Norman 'de Burgo'.)

Seventh child whose mother died 3 weeks after Mary's birth from a birth related phlebitis (inflamation of vein).
Siblings: Bridie, Patrick Finton, Thomas, Edward, John Christopher and Daniel.
Mary travelled the world extensively as a private nurse before settling down, as a hospital sister, in London.

Brian Dowling can remember her showing him reel films showing her at a marvelous party on a ship crossing the equator. A lively woman who would speak her mind.

At present despite owning property in Mountrath she resides in retirement in Kentish Town, London. Mary never married.

Assumed a Dowling relative by Alexander Dowling.
Establish only on statements that a Patrick Perette was a first cousin to Daniel Joseph Dowling (son of Thomas). Therefore, Thomas ought to have had a sister who married a Perette. Children: at least one called Patrick. WARNING: I think there is a higher probability that this person is confused with Johann Phelan, sister of Bridget Phelan, who did marry Patrick Perrette and that is how this is shown - Brian Thomas Dowling.
