Michael is a renowned hurley player with a great sense of humour. He lives on his farm in Westfields to the South of Dysartbeagh, Mountrath where he keeps greyhounds. Whoever meets him should beware of his vice-like handshake.
Brian Dowling (1955-) visited him at his home in 1986, near the path to the front door was a fenced compound containing several healthy greyhound dogs. Inside Michael served up, as refreshment for an unaware visitor to the country, a tall glass of home made Potheen (produced illegally.) On request for a 'mixer' he put in milk from the churn which, as it curdled, didn't help it go down at all!

A first World War Christmas revealed in Irish priest’s diary
British army chaplain Fr Ned Dowling’s diary includes account of Christmas Day 1914 on the battlefields
24Dec2014 - Michael Parsons - The Irish Times
The first World War diary of an Irish Catholic priest, including his detailed account of Christmas Day 1914 on the battlefields, has come to light.
The diary was written by Co Kilkenny-born Fr Ned Dowling, who volunteered to serve as a British army Catholic chaplain and was sent to Flanders in November 1914, where he served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
The diary contains a rare description of Irish soldiers attending Mass on the battlefield on Christmas morning, opening gift parcels sent from home, enjoying festive treats including plum pudding and, most remarkably, participating in the unofficial “Christmas Truce”, when the British and German armies briefly ceased hostilities and mingled in “No Man’s Land” to exchange gifts and play football.
Fr Dowling describes the start of the truce on Christmas Eve: “The enemy came out from his lair and sung out to us, while our fellows were not behindhand in showing the same friendly spirit.”
He said Mass on Christmas morning at a makeshift altar in an abandoned farm the Irish troops had occupied. From early morning the Irish soldiers “were forming up in the courtyard, white with frost”.
They had “been relieved from the trenches only yesterday” and so, with no time for Confession, he “gave a general absolution before the Mass, (and) no sermon except a few words of greeting, for it was cold standing there bare-headed and the Communions took a long time”.
Later that day, Fr Dowling was delighted to open gift parcels from Ireland and wrote: “No child waking to investigate the outcome of Santa Claus’ visit could show more pleasure than I did in opening my parcels. Amongst the little gifts were two new pipes, and, things I had sighed for, pipe-cleaners.”
Despite the appalling battlefield conditions, Fr Dowling was provided with a Christmas Day breakfast of rum and plum pudding.
The diary provides a graphic account of the duties of an army chaplain ministering to Irish soldiers on the Western Front, amidst the carnage of the first year of the war. It’s written with remarkable candour and attention to detail. Fr Dowling describes some of the battles and their aftermath, his efforts to comfort the wounded and dying, and conducting funerals amidst the shelling.
He also provides great detail about life in the trenches and encounters with various named Irish and other soldiers, German prisoners.
Although Fr Dowling served throughout the war, and stayed in the army until 1920, the diary only covers events during the first tumultuous year.
After the war, he returned to Ireland and, after serving as a curate in various parishes in Co Kilkenny, then became parish priest in the village of Camross, Co Laois in 1942. He served there for 18 years until his death, aged 74, in 1960.
He was known, informally, as “The Colonel”.
Fr Dowling describes Christmas Day 1914 with soldiers of Royal Dublin Fusiliers
24 Dec2014 - Michael Parsons - The Irish Times
Just a few months after leaving a prestigious job as a professor in St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, 28-year-old Fr Ned Dowling slept on a bed of straw on Christmas Eve, 1914, in an abandoned farmhouse a short distance from German enemy lines.
His diary records waking up on Christmas morning after “dreaming of home and other Xmases”, but he had “no time to call up memories of other awakenings, of large fires lit downstairs, heaps of presents, and bulging stockings” of his Irish childhood.
“The morning was clear and dark, with many stars, and very cold” and the volunteer military chaplain had to say Mass for his flock - soldiers of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers - some of whom had spent Christmas Eve in the trenches.
Farm buildings
He set up an altar in a makeshift chapel in the farm buildings, but gave “no sermon except a few words of greeting, for it was cold standing there bare-headed and the Communions took a long time”.
Fr Dowling also recorded how he and his “servant” - Pte Bernard Leavy from Co Longford - had to then travel to another group of Irish soldiers stationed on a nearby farm where “the mass took place in the large piggery, to the accompaniment of many grunts and in a dense atmosphere of smoke”.
After being up and working for six hours, he finally broke his fast when he accepted a request from a group of soldiers to “drink their health in some of their Xmas rum” and to taste some of their plum pudding which he did, despite grave reservations, and observed: “Rum and plum pudding after a six-hour fast. The thought of it would have killed me, and my doctor six months ago. Perhaps I am destined to die a less happy death.”
After the meal, he enjoyed “a good smoke”.
Gift parcels
Later that day, he was delighted to open gift parcels from Ireland.
The afternoon on Christmas Day “passed quietly reading such Xmas numbers (newspapers and periodicals) as we had and cussing at the fire which persisted in behaving in an unXmas-like manner”.
After a Christmas dinner of army rations, there was a “flow of stories and good cheer” and “the men had their beer, only French beer, potent only in name, but still something”.
But the officers, including Fr Dowling, managed to find champagne “somewhere” and then, he writes: “After the port went round we lit our pipes.”
Irish priest’s first World War diary to be published
Kilkenny-born Fr Ned Dowling was sent to Flanders in November 1914
26 Dec2014 - Michael Parsons - The Irish Times
The first World War diary of an Irish Catholic priest has been found during a house clearance in Co Laois.
Canon Seán O’Doherty, now the PP in Durrow, Co Laois has authorised the publication of Co Kilkenny-born Fr Ned Dowling’s diary, which covers the period from late 1914 until the summer of 1915.
Fr Dowling served as a British Army Catholic chaplain and was sent to Flanders in November 1914, where he served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers regiment.
The full 90-page transcript of the diary (seen exclusively by The Irish Times) will be published for the first time in 2015 in, Kilkenny Voices from the Western Front 1914-1918 - the latest publication by historians Niall Brannigan and John Kirwan.
Both men have spent the past two decades researching the first World War and, in 2012, published a monumental reference work, Kilkenny Families in the Great War, containing almost 3,000 short biographies of men and women associated with Co Kilkenny who were involved in conflict, of whom 400 died.
Fr Dowling’s diary contains harrowing and poignant descriptions of the conflict.
Describing a battle in early 1915 he wrote: “Shrapnel crashed down on the wounded, walking and lying, crashed into the swollen corpses of men and horses, and letting loose odours before which the other horrors of war took a back seat. The wounded were in a pitiable State.”
Another diary entry describes the night after a terrible battle: “When I reached the farm, I saw a strange sight, a great farmyard in the misty moonlight, covered with straw that moved up and down like the waves of the sea. It was uncanny. I wondered if I was quite well.
“Diffidently I remarked it to a stretcher-bearer. He was one of ours. ‘The wounded are under it, Father. We put the straw out of the barns under them, but with the pain they turn and twist until the straw is all over them and you can’t see one of them now at all.’ ”
First World War Diary: Who was Fr Ned Dowling?
26 Dec 2014 - Michael Parsons - The Irish Times
Born Edward Dowling - in 1886 in Slieverue, Co Kilkenny - but always known as Ned, he was the son of schoolteachers William and Catherine Dowling.
He studied for the Catholic priesthood and was ordained - for the Diocese of Ossory - in Maynooth in 1908. Fr Dowling was then sent to do missionary work in the north of England in the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, where he spent three years before he returned to Ireland and took up a teaching post as a professor at St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, in 1911.
In autumn 1914, following the outbreak of the first World War, he volunteered as a military chaplain with the British army and was dispatched to the western front. He travelled aboard the ship RMSS Normania and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
He was stationed near the Belgian village Ploegsteert - south of Ypres, on the French border - to which he referred, as did the British army generally, as “Plug Street”.
He served with distinction as a military chaplain in the army until 1920.
Fr Dowling then returned to Ireland, where he served as a curate in four parishes in Co Kilkenny until he was appointed parish priest of Camross, Co Laois, in January 1942. He was known informally as “the Colonel”.
He died in June 1960, aged 74.
Throughout the first World War, Fr Dowling used an engraved silver chalice and paten (a plate for holding the eucharist) that he kept in his knapsack.
They had been given been to him as a farewell gift by his colleagues at St Kieran’s when he volunteered.
The chalice and paten were brought back by him to Ireland after the war and are understood to be in private ownership.
Fr Ned Dowling's First World War Diary Describes Christmas 1914 Truce
'On Christmas Eve... the enemy came out from his lair and sung to us'
27Dec2014 - Michael Parsons - The Irish Times
The first World War diary of an Irish Catholic priest has been found during a house clearance in Co Laois.
Canon Seán O’Doherty, now the PP in Durrow, Co Laois has authorised the publication of Co Kilkenny-born Fr Ned Dowling’s diary, which covers the period from late 1914 until the summer of 1915.

Fr Dowling’s description of the Christmas Truce - which seems to have lasted from Christmas Eve until the evening of St Stephen’s Day - is a rare eye-witness written account.
The British Army Catholic chaplain with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers regiment describes hearing, on Christmas Eve, the sound of singing coming from the German trenches and the Irish soldiers responding in “the same friendly spirit”.
Sent to Flanders in November 1914, he writes: “When on Xmas Eve, an hour or so before our relief (and what it meant to be relieved, the Germans knew quite well), the enemy came out from his lair and sung out to us, while our fellows were not behindhand in showing the same friendly spirit.
Spirit of temporary goodwill
“It didn’t mean that they wouldn’t cheerfully have bayoneted the lot in a charge, it only meant that as there was seemingly no immediate prospect of killing any large number of Germans according to the rules of the game, they were quite ready and curious to approach them in a spirit of temporary and strictly limited good-will.”
During the next two days, the soldiers from both sides approached one another “in a spirit of temporary and strictly limited good-will”.
Gifts were exchanged including “buttons, electric torches, cigarettes and cigars”. Fr Dowling himself received a gift of cigars from a German soldier from the city of Leipzig.
He described the famous football match as “a washout” because the gunners had been ordered to fire some rounds. The Irish soldiers had warned the Germans that this might happen - and even apologised. The Germans were understanding and said “they knew what selfish beasts gunners were, leading a soft-life at least a thousand yards from the firing line, and shelling poor helpless devils of infantrymen.”
Fr Dowling noted that: “There was mutual understanding and sympathy expressed.”
Eventually, the guns went quiet and “peace reigned once more”. Thereafter, he writes, “not a rifle shot was heard for several days”.
From a gravestone at Camross cemetery: "Pray for the repose of the soul of Very Rev. Ed, Dowling PPBD (Camross) who died 7th June 1960 aged 74 years Parish Priest Camross 1942-1960". Believed out of the family.

The Victory Medal (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a United Kingdom and British Empire First World War campaign medal. The design and ribbon was also adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA in accordance with the decision of the Inter-Allied Peace Conference at Versailles (a 'Winged Victory). A particular form of this historic Greek monument was chosen by each nation, except the nations in the Far East who issued the medal but with a different design. The dates of the war were in every case 1914 to 1918, except that of the British Empire, which gave the dates as illustrated (1914 to 1919). The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was not awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

The British War Medal is a campaign medal of the United Kingdom which was awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces for service in the First World War. Two versions of the medal were produced. About 6.5 million were struck in silver and 110,000 were struck in bronze, the latter for award to Chinese, Maltese and Indian Labour Corps.
AwardMedal-Generic-1914-Star.jpg
The 1914 Star, colloquially known as the Mons Star, is a British World War I campaign medal for service in France or Belgium between 5 August and 22 November 1914. The 1914 Star was authorised under Special Army Order no. 350 in November 1917 and by an Admiralty Fleet Order in 1918, for award to officers and men of the British and Indian Expeditionary Forces who served in France or Belgium between 5 August and midnight of 22–23 November 1914. The former date is the day after Britain's declaration of war against the Central Powers, and the closing date marks the end of the First Battle of Ypres.

Citation Text: DEATH OF MR. JOHN COCKING We regret to record the death of Mr. John Cocking, of College Farm, second son of Mr. G. J. Cocking, of Lodge Farm, at his residence. on Friday after a brief illness. The Immediate cause of death was pernicious anaemia. Mr. Cocking had for several years been assisting his father in the management of his farm, owing to his advanced age and infirmities, but no one anticipated that death would claim the younger man first, and his untimely death at the comparatively early age of 53 years has cast gloom over a large circle friends. Deceased leaves widow, two sons and two daughters. The sons are well-known in the athletic world, and in the cricket and football field. The funeral took place at the Bedford Cemetery on Tuesday, where de- ceased was buried beside his mother, who died many years ago. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. Rosser, Vicar of Kempston. The mourners were the widow, his sons, Mr. H. B. and Reg. Cocking, and Miss Daisy Cocking (daughter), (Miss Gladys Cocking, daughter, who is an invalid, was unable attend). Mr. George Cocking (brother). Mr. B. Prole (brother-in-law), Messrs. Allan and Harry Prole. Amongst those present at the graveside we noticed Mr. and Mrs. Atkins, Mr. Payne, Mrs. George Cocking, Mr. Quenby, Mr. A. Worrall, Mr. Alex. Newman, Mr. T. Laxton, John Prole, etc., and the employees of the farm. The coffin was of polished oak with brass fittings, and the arrangements were ably carried out Messrs by Clarabut and Plumbe. Wreaths were sent by the following: - His sorrowing wife and children; Pem., and Harry; Ben and Allen; Patie, Horace, Mervyn and Kenneth; His friend. Bill; Henry and Annie; Mr. and Mrs. A.
