Cyril was born at 14 Bloomfield Road, Highgate, London to Cyril Bertie STEPHENS and Lilly Maria GYLBY. At the time Bertie was a Drapers window dresser at 33 Melgund Road, Islington where they lived. Shortly after Cyril's birth his parents moved back to Bertie's hometown Birmingham where Eric, Cyril's brother and only other sibling, was born. They then moved to 77 Yeading Lane, Hayes, Middlesex, about 6 months later. This was because Bertie took employment at Rouses Drapers, West Ealing.

Schools:
Tudor Road School, Southall (Cyril used to go to this school by tram!)
Townfield Road School, Hayes.
Acton, Southall and Twickenham Technical Colleges.
Twickenham Technical College.

World War Two broke out in 1939 when Cyril was 15 years old. Cyril's first employment was as an apprentice with "Farey Aviation" and he soon became a Graduate of the Royal Aeronautical Society (GRAS) working as a draughtsman and later Project Engineer on Fleet Air Arm Aircraft for the Second World War (including the design and construction of: Farey Swordfish, Albacore, Firefly and the Barracuda.)

Cyril married Rose Ella COCKING on 29th March 1952 in Knebworth Parish Church, Hertfordshire. They then lived in 79 Abbey Road, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Cyril and Rose had two daughters Pauline born in 1954 and Carole born in 1957.

Later Cyril took employment with Airtech, Ltd. Haddenham in Buckinghamshire for 30 years working with Electronic Communications Production Engineering. This included technical components and equipment like the 'Duplex' Radio Signal Tracker.

For a short time, during the 1960's, Cyril was an Usher at the Methodist Chapel, Aylesbury where the family attended services on Sunday.

Cyril's main hobby is photography and he would travel around the country looking for good pictures. He was Secretary of the Aylesbury Camera Club for many years and regularly took top prizes in competitions for best pictures in many different categories. He was awarded the APAGB: Award of meritable service Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. Cyril generally used 35mm film for slide projection often using two projectors for cross-fading effects. In his retirement Cyril would often travel around various places giving slide shows. One of his best, and quite massive, selections of slides is the "Changing Face of Aylesbury" showing many old buildings now demolished.
