Rotherham Advertiser - Tributes to popular housing warden By Admin | 02/04/2015

Tributes to popular housing warden

THE daughter of a popular housing warden who has died aged 71 has told how she carried on working beyond retirement age, saying: “What else would I be doing?”

Hillary Dowling said her mother Ada, only left her job as a council warden at 68 and continued working at Le Bistro in Wentworth, where she had been employed for 20 years, until two months ago. “She bravely struggled with cancer, finishing work only weeks before she died, and her stoicism and bravery was an inspiration to both her hospice nurses and her family,”said Hillary.

Formerly of St Ann’s Road, Ada started working on relief in Wharncliffe Flats. Latterly living in Rawmarsh, she covered many schemes including Wath, Swinton and Brampton, where she was popular with residents for spending time listening and helping them, often in her own time. Hillary added: “She loved her work and reluctantly left her job as a warden aged 68 when the service was re-organised. “Her caring nature extended to animals and she always had at least one dog, which she was often seen walking for miles.

“She married my father, who ran JV Dowling Painting & Decorators on St Ann’s Road, and we were a well known family in the area. “She brought me up as an equal to my brothers and always looked after older members of the family. “When my father died, she was working two jobs and moved to Thorogate on Rawmarsh and rapidly made new friends.”

Ada, who died at home surrounded by her family and little borrowed dog, a pug called Dylan, leaves behind five sons, a daughter and five granddaughters. Her funeral will be held at noon on Tuesday, April 14, at Rotherham Crematorium. Hillary said her family would love to welcome all her old friends and colleagues to attend.

Royal Air Force Station Lichfield also known as Fradley Aerodrome, was an operational training station from 1940 until 1958. It was situated in Fradley, 2 miles north east of Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. The airfield was the busiest airfield in Staffordshire during World War II. The airfield supported its own units as well as providing safe haven for many more. It was a control point for all aviation traffic that passed through the Birmingham area during the war and saw more aircraft movements than any other Staffordshire airfield.

Tommy Dowling - One of the Original Reds!

Tommy Dowling was born in 1893 to John Dowling and Mary Quinn in Fermoy, Cork in Ireland. His father was a soldier in the British Army and Tommy had ten siblings.

The family, searching for work, moved to Plumstead, Greenwich, England around 1903 when Tommy was 7 years old. As a teenager he was in low-paid work bottling mineral water, probably at the George Weaver Mineral Factory. This was adjacent to the home of Woolwich Arsenal Football Club (now Arsenal Football Club) who at that time played at the Invicta Athletic Ground in Plumstead. So, Tommy and his family were probably immersed in local football. By 1907 (aged 13) he was paying for the Plumstead Hibernians and while working played for them until 1913. He then played in the Kent League for Woolwich Football Club (who rented the Manor Gorund from Arsenal Football Club until 1914).

Tommy moved on to take a job as a telephone cable jointer while living with his parents. Then World War 1, the Great War to end all wars, started on 28 July 1914 and the family would have seen thousands of young men go off to war and not return. Tommy himself, following his father's footsteps, enlisted on 8 December 1915 with the British Army's Royal Engineer's (probably as he appeared to have technical communications skills). However, he was not really mobilised until 2 Dec 1916 when, as Sapper, he was posted in the 21st Signal Company to handle communications for the 3rd Army.

During the war, on 7 October 1916, Tommy, now aged 23, married Beatrice May Cunningham in Woolwich. In August 1917 he was sent off to the Middle East Theatre of War landing at the British base in Alexandria and then posted to Beirut as military switchboard operator. Tommy was reliable and intelligent in his duties and was promoted to Lance Corporal.

When the War ended, on 1 November 1918, Tommy as many other service personnel, continued on in the Army until demobilised on 2 December 1919. He was awarded his Victory and British War Medal. Back in 'civvy street' Plumstead, now aged 26, Tommy again took up his passion of playing football. He played football in the 'right half-back' position and began his new and serious football career by joining the Southern League club Charlton Athletic (nicknamed 'The Addicks') in 1920. He was then 5'9" tall and weighed-in at 12 stone and 5 pounds; he could be found working in the day but training assiduously in the evenings. He was known to be genial and unassuming with a wide circle of friends both on and off the pitch.

When Charlton Athletic were elected to the newly created Football League Third Division in August 1921, Tommy Dowling found a special place in the club’s history as, when making his League debut against Exeter City in August 1921, in Charlton’s inaugural League match, he scored their winning and their FIRST EVER League goal in a 1-0 victory in front of a 13,000 strong crowd at Charlton's stadium called "The Valley".

It would be his only goal in a mere 21 appearances over three seasons for Charlton's Addicks, and in 1924 (like a large number of other professional footballers at the time) he took the boat to the United States of America to play in their soccer leagues, featuring for Indiana Flooring (1925-26), Newark Skeeters and Calpe American throughout the mid 1920’s. But in 1928 while playing in America tragedy struck and Tommy suffered a broken leg.

On Tommy's return home to England from the States doctors at Brook Hospital, Shooter's Hill, Woolwich decided that his leg must be amputated! One cannot think of a more debilitating or depressing thing to happen to a footballer. His club, Charlton Athletic, played a benefit match for him on Christmas morning with their reserve team playing Hounslow Town. The match ended in a 5-5 draw and the proceeds from the collections at the match amount to £97 for Tommy. (Using an inflation calculator: £97 in 1928 is worth £6,399.82 in 2021). Football clubs were not the commercial juggernauts they are today and contributing fans were substantially less well-off compared to today, so this was a very respectable sum and must have brought tears to many eyes.

Not deterred from life, Tommy worked as a 'Ganger' (a foreman or supervisor of a gang of workers) in the munitions factory in Woolwich. In 1939, on the eve of World War 2, he was living in Woolwich with his sisters Kate and Mary Ellen.

Tommy Dowling died in 1945 in Plumstead, aged only 52, and was buried in Plumstead Cemetery.

"Come on you Reds!"

Brian Thomas Dowling (1955-): On 11 September 2022 I visited Plumstead Cemetary. Tommy's grave is unmarked. It took a great deal of time to find it and, in the end, I had to use the numbers. Approximately just off-centre in section H2, after much clearing on other graves I eventually found numbers 2330 and 2332 (some graves have these small numbers on an obscure part of any stone) and could only conclude 2331 was in the space between. I laid a small bunch of wild flowers with red and white and took some photos to aid future identification. The rectangular plot looked as if stones could have been removed or have sunk and was very overgrown.

Citation Detail: Award: The Victory Medal -,
Citation Text: (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a United Kingdom and British Empire First World War campaign medal.

The design and ribbon was also adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA in accordance with the decision of the Inter-Allied Peace Conference at Versailles (a 'Winged Victory). A particular form of this historic Greek monument was chosen by each nation, except the nations in the Far East who issued the medal but with a different design. The dates of the war were in every case 1914 to 1918, except that of the British Empire, which gave the dates as illustrated (1914 to 1919).

The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was not awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
