Confirmed: Community of Dowling, Ontario. Population looks to be between
1,000 to 5,000. It¹s about 40 km west of Sudbury Ontario.

What I meant by searching from the ³bottom up² was that, for the moment,
I¹m concentrating on my Canadian connections. My great grandfather
William Dowling came from Ireland (I don¹t know where yet), and he
married an Ontario-born woman named Lucy of French-Canadian descent ( I
don¹t know her maiden name yet).

My intention is to learn as much as I can about their life in Canada and
trace all their children, that is, my grandfather and all his siblings
and their children before I start tracing Irish connections.

You see, my grandfather died when my father (an only child) was five
months old, so my dad didn¹t learn much first-hand from his old man! And
my father was estranged from my mom almost from the time I was born, and
he¹s been dead for decades, so I didn¹t learn much from my old man,
either.

If you can believe it, my father¹s half-sisters (all over 70 years of
age) have been able to give me some clues about my grandfather (their
mother¹s first husband, for god¹s sake!) and some of his siblings.
Thanks to these women, I tracked down William and Lucy and five of their
children in the Ontario 1891 Census. I felt like I had been parachuted
into a family reunion! And I¹ve been hooked ever since (about a whole
month!)

Before tracing my roots to Ireland, I¹m dying to find out why Lucy moved
to Souris Manitoba, where according to the Manitoba Census of 1901, she
was listed as a widow living with two of her children and a mystery
grandchild.

Yes, that¹s it -- lots of little mysteries to solve. I love it!

Anyway, that¹s a rather lengthy explanation of ³from the bottom up².

By the way, I enjoyed your website. Boy, my ignorance of Ireland is
pretty frightening. But I¹ll remedy that in time.

My gggrandmother, Catherine Doolan was born in County Roscommon in 1819, married Martin Kelly in Dublin, Ireland, and immigrated in 1842. They are both buried in St. Columbkills Churchyard, Mara Township, Simcoe Co., Ontario with 3 of their 11 children. I am seeking her family in County Roscommon prior to a trip to Ireland this summer. I have found that after leaving the East coast the Dowlings went to Tenn. All of them worked for the railroad. My father Hubert-Grandfather John Thomas-Great Grandfather William. They later moved to Arkansas-Hot Springs--Ashdown-Have come to a dead end. Please help. thanks Judy Stewart

I was told that my GGGGrandfather cmae to the US by ship from Ireland. Our name was O'Dowling and he could not get a job so he changed out name to just Dowling. I don't have any proof to back this up with the exception of what our Grandparents told us. Are you in Ireland now? Do you happen to have a copy of the Dowling Family Crest. If you do and would share it with me, I would be most grateful. I am exploring every avenue to try to find something about my ancestors. It is very important to me. My Grandfather name was John Thomas--GGrandfather was William C. Thanks Judy

My GGrandfather as William born 1848. His father came here form somewhere in Ireland. He married A Mary Luttrell They had a son Robert Born in 1886. The names are somewhat the same but the dates or a little earlier than what you mentioned. My bunch of Dowlings left the East coast and went to Tenn. Working for the railroad they ended up in Arkansas. If any of this rings a bell e-mail me. I'm stuck.

My Grandfather James Dowling (b 1841), his brothers Nicholas and Patrick along with his sister Maryan came to the US from Suncroft Parish, County Kildare sometime before the Civil War. They came to Corpus Christi. My grandfather ended up in Northern Ohio.
Suncroft Parish is near the Curragh, not too far from Dublin.

I think we are related.
Eileen was buried recently in Suncroft, but her funeral Mass was in the chapel of the Curragh Camp, as Suncroft church is in course of re-decoration for the Jubilee Year 2000.

My Grandfather James Dowling (b 1841), his brothers Nicholas and Patrick along with his sister Maryan came to the US from Suncroft Parish, County Kildare sometime before the Civil War. They came to Corpus Christi. My grandfather ended up in Northern Ohio.
Suncroft Parish is near the Curragh, not too far from Dublin.

Does this Dowling family tie in with yours? Patrick & Ellen Dowling, Ireland, had 4 (surviving) sons & 1 daughter:

- William, came to NZ and married Mary Lyons in Hyde in 1874;

- Edward, came to NZ and married Catherine Murphy in Hyde in 1875; had a boy Patrick (perhaps did not live long); and went (back?) to Australia;

- John, came to Victoria, Aust, married Mary Griffen in 1874 then moved to Hyde, NZ and had Ellen (born 1866), Sarah (1868), Patrick (1870), Willam (1871) & Thomas (1877);

- Thomas stayed in Co. Kerry, married Julia Hacket and had Ellen (m Michael Soollard), John (m Ellen), Mary, Margaret (m Terrance Montague), Johannah (m Patrick Ahern, USA), Anne (m Patrick Nolan) and Julia (m Michael Collins); and

- Mary who married Joseph Lovett (USA) who died 1905 in Abbeydorney.

Any tie ups I'd love to hear about. (I'm a decendant of the John who came to New Zealand).

Edward Dowling (born 1842) married Catherine Murphy (born 1854) in Hyde, New Zealand, in 1875. They had one child, Patrick (who may have died as a child) then apparently shifted to Australia. Edward left two brothers in NZ: William & John, although William too is thought to have travelled to Aust about 1887.

He left Ireland and boarded a ship named the SELKIRKSHIRE in Plymouth England around September 1883. His wife Annie McDermott also on the ship along with his brothers(I presume), Daniel and Matthew.
