Apparently, Daniel Dowling was in the British Army at the time of the 1798 Irish Rebellion and was sent from England to County Wexford to suppress the uprising. It is then, explained in a letter that he deserted with half of his company to the Irish cause. The letter from which this is drawn appears to confuse Daniel with his son, Thomas, stating his followers escaped to Yerba Buena or Goat Island in San Francisco now in the United States of America.

Citation Detail: From: EDWARD T. SURKOSKY (mailto:email address); Sent: 08 June 1999 06:00; To: email address; Subject: Re: Dowling - Donohoe; 1: Brian, My maternal grandmother was Anna Donohoe. Her father came to the U.S. from Ireland and she was born in 1886. She was married to W. J. Baer. She died in 1971. In 1983 the family received a letter form Portlaoise. Leix, Eire addressed to the family of the late W.J. Baer. It was from a relative in Ireland. She included a rudimentary family tree, with no dates, going back to 1725. Michael Dowling 1725?-1802 -- wife? > Daniel, John, Michael, Judith, Mary > Mary Dowling married ?Donohoe > Timothy Donohoe married Catharine Conroy > John Donohoe married Julia Dunne > Michael Donohoe married Bridget Duffy > Anna R. Donohoe married William J. Baer > Mary M. Baer married Adam E. Surkosky > Edward T. Surkosky. This is from information from the letter and what I know. She could not go any further than Michael Donohoe. She also said in the letter that Michael Dowling's son Daniel had one son whose name was Thomas Henry Dowling. He came to the U.S. and purchase Goat Island (Yerba Buena) in San Francisco Bay. the government seized it. He went to Washington, D.C. to seek redress. While he was there he died. His family had no idea where he was buried. That island sets right next to the Golden Gate Bridge. So if this is of any help I have a bit more, but not much. Let me know. SURKOSKY (mailto:email address) Sent: 11 June 1999 05:23; To: Brian Dowling; Subject: Re: Dowling - Donohoe 2; Brian, The original notes of Mailing 2 were somewhat cryptic. Vertical lines were drawn and names inserted under name titles. Judith was my error, it should read Judilli. As far as the Dowlings go -- this was the first time we ever heard of them. My grandmother certainly knew nothing of them. If she did she never said anything to us. She was very popular and all her sisters, nieces and nephews visited her. She always had several people staying with her throughout the year. She took in an aged cousin by the name of Mary Brady who was widowed from a man named Reynolds. She took care of her the last 15 years of her life. She was in her 90's when she died. Fr. Pat stayed with her in the summer of 1928 (circa) that's when the picture was taken. Her husband died when I was four (1947) and my dad's parents (mother 1916, father 1936) before I was born (1943). She was the only grandparent I knew ---- all I can say is that she was a wonderful and beautiful person. Nothing ever fazed her. The only thing that bothered her was electrical storms. Ed Surkosky - email address 4. Brian, My mother's cousin's daughter went over several times after we received the letter. They brought back the following: Michael Dowling 1727-1802, wife's name unknown. Born Trumera Mauntrath; buried Clondairig Cemetery and his headstone can still be seen. Children: Thomas Henry Dowling (an only son) fought with Wm. Smith O'Brien and the United Irishmen at Ballingary. Fled to America and California. Bought an island in San Francisco Bay from a man named Nye, about 1853 (Yerba Buena - Goat Island). He quarried stone until evicted in 1867. He left his family and traveled to Washington to seek compensation. Died about 1870 in east coast area. Grave never found. Mrs. Twena V. M. Day his youngest daughter died in Oakland, California, May, 1924. She had 13 proven heirs. John - Mathew - Thomas - Bridget - Michael - Dennis - Kathleen - Mary - Elizabeth. Michael Dowling - wife ? > Daniel, John, Michael, Judilli, Mary > Mary Dowling - ? Donohoe > number of family unknown but Timothy > Timothy Donohoe - Catherine Conroy > John, Michael, Denis, Mathew, Thomas, Kathleen, Bridget, Mary, Elizabeth > John Donohoe - Julia Dunne > Daniel etc. ( John, Michael, Denis,Matthew, Thomas, Kathleen, Bridget, Mary, Elizabeth) > Michael Donohoe - Bridget Duffy > Timothy, Joseph, Mary, Kate, Jeanette, Anna, Ida Mae, Thomas, and two girls dead (Margaret, Alice). Joseph married Ellen Trainer; Mary married Thomas Laughran; Kate married Harry Maloy; Jeannette married Thomas Doyle; Anna married William Baer; Ida Mae married Bill Durbin; Thomas married Nellie Shake.
