Subject: Re: Roll Call & Introduction (s) TEEHAN, DOOLEY, RILEY: QUEENS
CO. C. 1840

Hi Jane and all. Jane you have been a saint. We are all in your debt!

But now to business; surname spellings vary, of course;

Margaret DOOLEY m. Patrick Henry TEEHAN and produced four children:
Johanna (or Julia) TEEHAN b. 1843 Queens Co. who was the sister of
Briget Riley, Anna Riley and Timothy Riley. After the father's death
the children were raised by members of the father's family, some of whom were RILEYs - hence the name change. Whether the names were "legal" or "registered" changes I don't know, but they were commonly known as RILEYs except for Johanna.

Johanna (Julia) TEEHAN emigrated to the U.S. in 1859 to join her sister Briget RILEY who had previously established herself there.

"Information deemed reliable but has not been verified."

There is a trainload of cousins awaiting a connection in Ireland.
Please help!

All the best,

I am trying to find information on the family of Bishop Thomas Joseph Dowling in Ontario, Canada. (1840-1924) He was born in Ireland, and his sisters are probably Kate and Mary. Kate married Timothy Cregan and moved to Chicago, Illinois.

My grandfather, Denis Cregan, came through Ellis Island in 1898 and went to his cousin's in Ontario, Canada - Bishop Thomas Joseph Dowling. I can not find any records for my grandfather and this might prove a connection. My grandparents lived in Chicago, Il and had 3 children between 1906-1910.

Any help would be appreciated. Donna
------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.sacredheartschool.net/School/dowling-history.htm States on 17 February 2004 a remarkably coincidental name:
"Back in the year 1908, a man named John Thomas Dowling, a Catholic Bishop, purchased a summer house on the Mountain Brow of Hamilton. Fo a few Catholic families that resided on the mountain at the time, Bishop Dowling ensured that Mass was provided. He would have a tent put up on a vacant lot (on south-west corner of Viewpoint Avenue and Mountain Brow) across the street from his house (located on the south-west corner of Mountain Brow and Viewpoint) for celebrating of Mass. Bishop Dowling also utilised a large house a little further up the street on Viewpoint Avenue, a house known then as "Mount Carmel", for holding Mass in winter months.

Eventually, by 1912, the tent would no longer be needed. That year, the Bishop dedicated a newly built church as the "Chapel of the Sacred Heart". A small wood-framed, white painted, church was built on the empty lot that the Bishop had been using for celebrating Mass in the summer months on the south-west corner of Mountain Brow and Viewpoint Avenue. Years later, as the clergy of the church grew in numbers, the Bishop, likely in his senior years of life, donated his old summer home to the church for use as a church Rectory.

Forty years later after the Chapel of the Sacred Heart was dedicated by Bishop Dowling, construction would begin on a much larger, stone-built church. This church would accommodate the growing number of Catholic families living on the mountain as the smaller wooden church had seating for only 150 souls. To accomplish the construction of this new church the Bishop's old summer house had first to be moved to another location as it occupied the land where the church had to be built.

The Bishop's house was relocated on the other side of Viewpoint further north towards Viewpoint. There it remained, beside the present day "Steven's House", for just over 10 years before being torn down in the late 1960's to make way for an addition that was being built onto the school (called the Sacred Heart). This addition to the school included the junior and senior kindergarten rooms, resource rooms and a few more bathrooms - the last additions to have been added to the school after the gymnasium was built a few years earlier.

In 1924, the year that Bishop Dowling ceased his active role as Bishop of the Sacred Heart Parish, the corner stone for a two room, brick school house was laid. Sacred Heart School finally has become an official school with the Sacred Heart Parish under the Spiritual leadership of Father James Kirby, Sacred Heart's first pastor, and Sacred Heart's first official school principal, Mr K. Pothier.

In 1921, almost 10 years after Bishop Dowling began holding Mass in a tent, Sacred Heart was given official status as a Parish on it's own; having both church and a school to complete the full Parish community.

http://www.irishhamilton.ca/D-people.htm on 17 February 2004.
"Dowling, Thomas Joseph. Born 1840 Shannagolden, Co. Limerick, Ireland. Died 1924 Hamilton.

Ordained in 1924 in Hamilton at St. Mary's Cathedral. Gained fame early for being a very competent financial administrator. Became Bishop of Ontario in 1887 until 89. Was noted to be the most traveled Bishop credited with opening churches as far north as Manitoulin Island. Traveling an average of 40 to 50 miles per day. Known as being a "Builder Priest" opened many Catholic Schools, Churches and Convents including Sisters of St. Joseph in 1888. (built 9 schools, six churches, and 3 convents) referred to himself as a progressive Bishop, taking the Latin out of Mass and replacing it with the native tongue of the parishioners (Polish, Italian, German, English. etc) Was known for being heavily involved in the Irish Community, was famous for singing Irish songs at the St. Patrick's day celebrations, Acted as Chaplin for the local Fenian militia. Bishop Dowling has had many great achievements too many to list, he was notorious for championing the cause of the little people, and had much political pull. One achievement Bishop Dowling will be known for was being instrumental in moving the Irish of "Slab Town" ghetto to rural areas. He remained Bishop until his death at the time the Oldest Bishop in North America."

In 1893 Bishop Dowling established Acton as an independent parish and Georgetown and Oustic were attached as Mission Churches. In 1936 Rockwood was established as a Parish and Oustic was made a mission of Rockwood.

Patrick/James Doolan b. abt. 1744 in Ireland, d. 11 Aug 1826, Washington, D.C. Came to America before the Revolution, served as a soldier from Massachusetts, lived out his life in Greenfield, Saratoga Cty, NY. Married before 1781 and had one daughter, Paulina, b. 1781 who married Ebenezer Harrington in 1799.

Maybe someone will have some clues to his life in Ireland and/or his wife's name.

Thanks, Peggy Hoffmann.
