Research Note: The primary issue surrounding this Edward Dowling is distinguishing the difference between two separate Edward Dowlings from the Portlaoise parish.
Edward (A) is born bef 26 Jul 1840 to John Dowling & Mary Kelly;
Edward (B) is born bef 20 Feb 1841 to Hugh Dowling the shopkeeper & Sally Kelly;
Edward (C) married Margaret Leonard on 22 Sep 1862 in Portlaoise, Laois, Ireland;
Edward (D) married Mary Kane/Moloy on 27 Nov 1863 in Boston Massachusetts, USA.

Edward (A) and Edward (B) are not the same person as they have different parents in baptisms. Edward (C) and (D) would appear unlikely to be the same person as they marry different spouses in different countries.

1. The residence at the baptism for Edward (A) appears to be Portlaoise and the residence for Edward (C) at the marriage to Margaret Leonard (and early subsequent children) are also in Portlaoise (as in the town). The residence for Edward (B) is The Heath/Ballydavis which, while within Portlaoise parish, is further to the north-east.

2. A highly probably later candidate for Edward (B) appears as Edward (D) in a marriage to Mary Kane/Moloy in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. This shows an Edward, born in Ireland, with a close age and parents of Hugh & Sarah. An important confusable from this source is that both Edward (A) and (B) would appear to be carpenters!

This small locality difference suggests, albeit very tenuously, that Edward (A) is identical to Edward (C) added to this the Boston marriage and I am confident to show Edward (A) and (C) as the same person until new evidence comes to light.
