The family roots came from County Clair, Parish Diser, Ireland, near Ennis. Genealogy descendants = Dowling married McNamarra DOB unknown but it would be before 1800. Michael Dowling married Mary O'Connor born in Clair County, DOB unknown. they are burried in Parish of Diser, near Ennis, Ireland. Her mother was O'Laughlin. Their children came to the United States via port Rochester, New York in 1862. I have not been able to locate the ship to know how many siblings came over, however, I have a record of 7 siblings. Their family history indicates one brother and a sister stayed in New York, and the remaining siblings traveled West working for the railroad. I have a record of 3 boys homestead in Walnut, Crawford County,Kansas. This includes my husband's grandfather Michael DOB 29 April 1843, place County Clari, Ireland. He married Mary Mulholland who was born in Missouri, USA in 1859. Married 2 april 1877. A brother John J. Dowling DOB 1846 married Mary McCarty and Dennis Dowling DOB 1840 married Mary Cleary, born in Ireland. One of the siblings Mary Dowling married Lawrence Markem who was born 23 Jan 1844 Aosersa County, Tiperodise, Ireland, Mary born July 1838. Mary Mulholland's father was Henry ;Mulholland born 1819 Tyrone Co., Dungannon, Ireland. He came to Christine Co, Kentucky 1875. Henry's father was Charles Mulholland and mother was rosa Moore born in England. My husband's aunt recorcded this information on several pieces of paper and the back of photographs. We found this information after her death. It would be interesting if you are able to connect your ancestors to this family. I have no idea the number of siblings in Michael's family who was born Clair County. I am thinking of changing my Internet service in a couple weeks, my E-Mail address will change. (16Feb1999) Charles Mulholland and Rosa More had 3 children: Henry who operated a wagon train from St. Joe MO, USA, Dr David Mulholland and Arthur Mulholland. David was buried in MO. he had studied for the priesthood and his history is in the County Library of Andrew County and he is listed as the first Greek and Latin scholar of that county. David was a doctor at Marysville MO. He died young and left a wife and 4 sons at Maryville, MO. They are buried in Maryville. His wife was not a Catholic. Charles Mulholland's wife Rosa and one son, Arthur, did not come to USA they moved from Ireland to England and died in Tyne, Northumberland in England in 1881. - Regina Dowling

My mother's maiden name was Mildred Dowling. After many years of family research, she learned that she is descended from a James Dolen who married a Mary Morgan in 1749 in Frome, Somerset, England. One of their sons, also a James Dolen, b. 1750, married Sarah Elliot. In turn, their son Thomas married Mary Dowling(some doubt as to her surname) and was thereafter known as Thomas Dowling (that's one theory, anyway). However, the name transformation may have taken place, all the descendants since have taken the name Dowling. Some migrated here to the USA, and others remained in England.

Do these circumstances make us less authentic Dowlings than others?

Of course I may be misinterpreting your message. What exactly is your source for this information? Are these data all from your own gleaning, or is there in fact someone else researching this line? Though I've been using computers for many years, I'm still in the learning stage in regard to the Internet (and will probably always be), so your reference to the "BBS" has me puzzled. Is this a "bulletin board", and if so, how do I access it?

As to your specific question regarding the Dolen data, the only mismatch I see compared to what I have is that Thomas Dolen/Dowling's father, as well as his grandfather, was named James Dolen, according to my best information.

At present, the James Dolen descendants (together with spouses) in my family tree number somewhat over 500, and include some 7th great grandchildren. Most of these are immigrants (including both Hugh and James Dowling) to the USA and their descendants. I've been busy with other (non-Dowling) lines in my family, and have not yet gotten serious about tracking down Dowling relatives in the "old country".

I eagerly await your elaborating on the source of your James Dolen data!

Here's a Dowling puzzle that may or may not interest you.

My mother's maiden name was Mildred Dowling. After many years of family research, she learned that she is descended from a James Dolen who married a Mary Morgan in 1749 in Frome, Somerset, England. One of their sons, also a James Dolen, b. 1750, married Sarah Elliot. In turn, their son Thomas married Mary Dowling(some doubt as to her surname) and was thereafter known as Thomas Dowling (that's one theory, anyway). However, the name transformation may have taken place, all the descendants since have taken the name Dowling. Some migrated here to the USA, and others remained in England.

Do these circumstances make us less authentic Dowlings than others?

How is a Doolan different from a Dolen?

Thanks so much for the very prompt and most thorough response to my Dolen/Dowling message. I appreciated it all, but the last part giving some of the descendants of James Dolen got me especially excited. This is clearly my family, and someone out there besides me must be researching it.

Of course I may be misinterpreting your message. What exactly is your source for this information? Are these data all from your own gleaning, or is there in fact someone else researching this line? Though I've been using computers for many years, I'm still in the learning stage in regard to the Internet (and will probably always be), so your reference to the "BBS" has me puzzled. Is this a "bulletin board", and if so, how do I access it?

As to your specific question regarding the Dolen data, the only mismatch I see compared to what I have is that Thomas Dolen/Dowling's father, as well as his grandfather, was named James Dolen, according to my best information.

At present, the James Dolen descendants (together with spouses) in my family tree number somewhat over 500, and include some 7th great grandchildren. Most of these are immigrants (including both Hugh and James Dowling) to the USA and their descendants. I've been busy with other (non-Dowling) lines in my family, and have not yet gotten serious about tracking down Dowling relatives in the "old country".

I eagerly await your elaborating on the source of your James Dolen data!

Alison, I'm intrigued by your reference to a "vast Dowling database." My mother's maiden name was Mildred Dowling, and she has gathered data on a number of Dowlings in our family, going back to a Thomas Dowling, 1774-1844, who was buried at East Woodlands, Somerset, England. One of his sons, Hugh, 1803-1884, migrated to Michigan in 1850, and was my ggGrandfather. I have a number of other Dowlings in my data -- do any of the above match anything you have? (In rechecking my notes, I see that Thomas was originally a Dolen, but evidently took the name of his wife, who was Mary Dowling.)

My mother passed along some more data re our English forbears. My ggggrandfather, Thomas Dolen/Dowling, was baptized 11 June 1774 at Marston Bigot Church, died 22 June 1843 at Tytherington,and was buried 27 June 1843 at the New Church, East Woodlands. He and his first wife, Mary Dowling, had 16 children, including a James (baptized 8 December 1804 at St. Johns, Frome), and Hugh (my gggrandfather, born 8 Feb 1803 at Tuckmarsh), both of whom migrated to America in the mid-1800's. Looks like we have no connection, so far, at least.

Thanks so much for the very prompt and most thorough response to my Dolen/Dowling message. I appreciated it all, but the last part giving some of the descendants of James Dolen got me especially excited. This is clearly my family, and someone out there besides me must be researching it.

Of course I may be misinterpreting your message. What exactly is your source for this information? Are these data all from your own gleaning, or is there in fact someone else researching this line? Though I've been using computers for many years, I'm still in the learning stage in regard to the Internet (and will probably always be), so your reference to the "BBS" has me puzzled. Is this a "bulletin board", and if so, how do I access it?

As to your specific question regarding the Dolen data, the only mismatch I see compared to what I have is that Thomas Dolen/Dowling's father, as well as his grandfather, was named James Dolen, according to my best information.

At present, the James Dolen descendants (together with spouses) in my family tree number somewhat over 500, and include some 7th great grandchildren. Most of these are immigrants (including both Hugh and James Dowling) to the USA and their descendants. I've been busy with other (non-Dowling) lines in my family, and have not yet gotten serious about tracking down Dowling relatives in the "old country".

I eagerly await your elaborating on the source of your James Dolen data!

Alison, I'm intrigued by your reference to a "vast Dowling database." My mother's maiden name was Mildred Dowling, and she has gathered data on a number of Dowlings in our family, going back to a Thomas Dowling, 1774-1844, who was buried at East Woodlands, Somerset, England. One of his sons, Hugh, 1803-1884, migrated to Michigan in 1850, and was my ggGrandfather. I have a number of other Dowlings in my data -- do any of the above match anything you have? (In rechecking my notes, I see that Thomas was originally a Dolen, but evidently took the name of his wife, who was Mary Dowling.)

My mother passed along some more data re our English forbears. My ggggrandfather, Thomas Dolen/Dowling, was baptized 11 June 1774 at Marston Bigot Church, died 22 June 1843 at Tytherington,and was buried 27 June 1843 at the New Church, East Woodlands. He and his first wife, Mary Dowling, had 16 children, including a James (baptized 8 December 1804 at St. Johns, Frome), and Hugh (my gggrandfather, born 8 Feb 1803 at Tuckmarsh), both of whom migrated to America in the mid-1800's. Looks like we have no connection, so far, at least.

The family roots came from County Clair, Parish Diser, Ireland, near Ennis. Genealogy descendants = Dowling married McNamarra DOB unknown but it would be before 1800. Michael Dowling married Mary O'Connor born in Clair County, DOB unknown. they are burried in Parish of Diser, near Ennis, Ireland. Her mother was O'Laughlin. Their children came to the United States via port Rochester, New York in 1862. I have not been able to locate the ship to know how many siblings came over, however, I have a record of 7 siblings. Their family history indicates one brother and a sister stayed in New York, and the remaining siblings traveled West working for the railroad. I have a record of 3 boys homestead in Walnut, Crawford County,Kansas. This includes my husband's grandfather Michael DOB 29 April 1843, place County Clari, Ireland. He married Mary Mulholland who was born in Missouri, USA in 1859. Married 2 april 1877. A brother John J. Dowling DOB 1846 married Mary McCarty and Dennis Dowling DOB 1840 married Mary Cleary, born in Ireland. One of the siblings Mary Dowling married Lawrence Markem who was born 23 Jan 1844 Aosersa County, Tiperodise, Ireland, Mary born July 1838. Mary Mulholland's father was Henry ;Mulholland born 1819 Tyrone Co., Dungannon, Ireland. He came to Christine Co, Kentucky 1875. Henry's father was Charles Mulholland and mother was rosa Moore born in England. My husband's aunt recorcded this information on several pieces of paper and the back of photographs. We found this information after her death. It would be interesting if you are able to connect your ancestors to this family. I have no idea the number of siblings in Michael's family who was born Clair County. I am thinking of changing my Internet service in a couple weeks, my E-Mail address will change. (16Feb1999) Charles Mulholland and Rosa More had 3 children: Henry who operated a wagon train from St. Joe MO, USA, Dr David Mulholland and Arthur Mulholland. David was buried in MO. he had studied for the priesthood and his history is in the County Library of Andrew County and he is listed as the first Greek and Latin scholar of that county. David was a doctor at Marysville MO. He died young and left a wife and 4 sons at Maryville, MO. They are buried in Maryville. His wife was not a Catholic. Charles Mulholland's wife Rosa and one son, Arthur, did not come to USA they moved from Ireland to England and died in Tyne, Northumberland in England in 1881. - Regina Dowling
