(11Feb1999) Brian, Family surnames from Ireland includes; Dowling,O'Connor, McNamarra, Mulholland, McCarty, Markem, Cleary, O'Laughlin.
The family roots came from County Clair, Parish Diser, Ireland, near Ennis. Genealogy descendants = Dowling married McNamarra DOB unknown but it would be before 1800. Michael Dowling married Mary O'Connor born in Clair County, DOB unknown. they are burried in Parish of Diser, near Ennis, Ireland. Her mother was O'Laughlin. Their children came to the United States via port Rochester, New York in 1862. I have not been able to locate the ship to know how many siblings came over, however, I have a record of 7 siblings. Their family history indicates one brother and a sister stayed in New York, and the remaining siblings traveled West working for the railroad. I have a record of 3 boys homestead in Walnut, Crawford County,Kansas. This includes my husband's grandfather Michael DOB 29 April 1843, place County Clari, Ireland. He married Mary Mulholland who was born in Missouri, USA in 1859. Married 2 april 1877. A brother John J. Dowling DOB 1846 married Mary McCarty and Dennis Dowling DOB 1840 married Mary Cleary, born in Ireland. One of the siblings Mary Dowling married Lawrence Markem who was born 23 Jan 1844 Aosersa County, Tiperodise, Ireland, Mary born July 1838. Mary Mulholland's father was Henry ;Mulholland born 1819 Tyrone Co., Dungannon, Ireland. He came to Christine Co, Kentucky 1875. Henry's father was Charles Mulholland and mother was rosa Moore born in England. My husband's aunt recorcded this information on several pieces of paper and the back of photographs. We found this information after her death. It would be interesting if you are able to connect your ancestors to this family. I have no idea the number of siblings in Michael's family who was born Clair County. I am thinking of changing my Internet service in a couple weeks, my E-Mail address will change. I have some print outs I will put in the mail next week. Brian best of luck in your search, I hope this information will be helpful. Sincerely, Regina Dowling
(16Feb1999) Charles Mulholland and Rosa More had 3 children: Henry who operated a wagon train from St. Joe MO, USA, Dr David Mulholland and Arthur Mulholland. David was buried in MO. he had studied for the priesthood and his history is in the County Library of Andrew County and he is listed as the first Greek and Latin scholar of that county. David was a doctor at Marysville MO. He died young and left a wife and 4 sons at Maryville, MO. They are buried in Maryville. His wife was not a Catholic. Charles Mulholland's wife Rosa and one son, Arthur, did not come to USA they moved from Ireland to England and died in Tyne, Northumberland in England in 1881. - Regina Dowling

The Doolin Dalton Gang - The Wild Bunch
Bill Doolin was born in Johnson County, Arkansas in 1858.
The Doolin Dalton Gang consisted of a number of outlaws towards the end of the 19th century. The Dalton brothers Grat, Frank, Bob, Bill and Emmett were raised on the border of Indian Territory near Coffeyville, Kansas, USA. They had worked as law officers for sometime but eventually went crooked and, with the gang, became a scourge of the west.
For a while Emmett Dalton worked on the Bar X Bar Ranch near the Pawnee Agency, on the Cimarron River, Oklahoma and here also worked William St. Power, "Tulsa Jack" Blake and Bill Doolin. Several other gang members also came from the ranch. Bill Doolin was 23 years old when, after numerous jobs, he got work at this ranch in 1881. He worked here as a cowboy for Oscar D Halsall, of Texas, who he had met in Caldwell in Kansas. Doolin became the top hand.
The Daltons are believed to have committed their first train robbery on 6 February 1891 at Alila, California. They fled, Grat and Bill Dalton were arrested, and Bob and Emmett went back to the ranch and joined up with the others of the gang. In May they robbed the train at Wharton O.T. making off with $1745.
Bill Doolin then fell into trouble with the law in a shoot-out and wounding of two officers in Coffeyville, Kansas over a keg of beer for a 4th July party in 1891.
The gang's then robbed the Katy train at Leliaetta, Wagoner, IT of $2500 on 15 September 1891. The gang were now Bob and Emmett Dalton, 'Bitter Creek' Newcomb, Bill Powers, Dick Broadwell, Charlie Pierce and Bill Doolin. Later Grat escaped and rejoined the gang.
On 1 June 1892 the gang, including Bill Doolin, robbed the a train at Red Rock Station. Just as the train entered the station, the gang carefully positioned, spotted something wrong with the coaches and held back to rob the next train of only £50. However, if they had of taken on the first train they would have had their work cut out because it had $70,000 protected by a train full of armed guards.
Their last train on 14 July 1892 was at Adair IT. They escaped with cash after a terrifying shoot out with Deputies on the train in which two bystanders were shot, one killed.
The gang then split up. The Dalton boys and some others, but not Bill Doolin, went to rob two banks in Coffeyville, Kansas on 5 October 1892. They were quickly recognised and the townspeople armed themselves. In a fierce shootout four of the brave townsmen lost their lives but for of the five bandits were also killed. Emmett seriously wounded later stood trial, and was sentenced to life for the crime.
We do not know why Bill Doolin was not there on the day. Some say he was as a mysterious sixth gunman. Some say there had been a big falling out with the jealous Bob Dalton who considered Bill Doolin to be a 'loose cannon'.
Bill Doolin, Bitter creek Newcomb and Charlie Pierce were still on the run. On 12 October 1992 in Caney, Kansas, just eighteen miles west of Coffeyville another train was robbed of $1,500 by four masked men.
The gang was joined by Ol Yantis to rob the Ford County Bank at Spearville, Kansas on 1 November 1892. The gang split to avoid the posse which followed Ol Yantis and shot him dead.
The gang were then joined by Bill "Tulsa Jack" Blake, Dan "Dynamite Dick" Clifton, George "Red Buck" Waightman and Bill Dalton the last of the Dalton boys.
The gang were now feared in this part of the West with regular robberies occurring in the vicinity. But Bill Doolin had a private life and married Edith Ellsworth of Ingalls, OT on the 14 March 1893 in Kingfisher, OT. Their married relationship was always kept a secret.
Shortly after, on 11 June 1892 Bill's gang was robbing a train near Cimarron, Kansas. The posse chased him and shot him in the left foot. While he escaped his foot was badly damaged and he would limp for the rest of his life.
The gang was joined by Roy "Arkansas Tom Jones" Daugherty. Almost as soon as he joined he was caught in an violent ambush by Marshalls, in the gang's hideout in Ingalls OT. This occurred on 1 September 1893. Thirteen Marshalls and seven of the gang shot it out. Three Marshalls and one bystander were killed. Two of the bandits and one bystander were injured. Arkansas Tom was tried and imprisoned for 50 years.
The gang carried on with robberies throughout 1894. Bill Dalton split from the gang to form his own but killed in a shootout in Ardmore IT on 8 June 1894.
The gang, now known as the Wild Bunch, committed it's last robbery on a train at Dover OT. They robbed the passengers and on there way back to Ames, OT, they were skillfully followed by a posse. In the gun battle Tulsa Jack was shot dead and the rest of the gang split up.
Rewards were high and the gang on the run. On 1 May 1895 they were in hiding in Dunn's Farm. Bill, John and Dal Dunn shot Bitter Creek Newcomb and Charlie Pierce while they were asleep. They then collected $5,000 from a Marshall in Guthrie for their bodies!
After the deaths of the gang members Bill Doolin tried desperately to negotiate a lighter sentence for turning himself in but this was refused. So, Bill left the territory for New Mexico and spent the summer of 1895 in hiding with Little Dick West. Edith was at home with their son in Ingalls, Oklahoma and eventually Bill went back to them an took them off to 'start again' in Burden, Kansas. Despite a false name of "Tom Wilson" Bill Doolin was followed to Burden and on to Eureka Springs where he was captured by Deputy Marshall Tilghman who had killed other members of the old gang.
Locked up Bill was no longer a threat and the Marshalls easily rounded up, or shot, the remaining members of the gang. In prison together on 5 July 1896 Bill Doolin and Dynamite Dick escaped with twelve other prisoners. Bill fled to Edith in Lawson OT and made plans to move on. However, Marshall Heck Thomas was on the trail with his posse and caught up with him 24 August 1896. Thomas arranged an ambush for Doolin and shot him dead.

My ggg grandfather was said to be Bill Doolin
He did run away from home, he also did join the Dalton gang. He was part of the Coffeyvill raid on Oct. 7, 1892 also a robbery on June 11, 1893, also a robbery on March 13, 1894. Bill was 5'8 & 1/2" tall weighed 185 lbs, and he died when he came after his wife and son in August 1894.
He formed his own gang and was said to have been worse than the Dalton's any day.

Bill Doolin
He was a tall man 5'8 1/2" ,very thin, deep set eyes and black hair. He did not take part in the Coffeyville raid. When he did rob, he used part of the money to help stake farmers for the winter , when store keepers would not give farmers credit. He had 1 sister, Tennessee Doolin. I have a copy of her will. Uncle Bill had no full brothers, only half brothers. Want more information let me know.
I'm puting together a book on all the doolins I can find. I research for all the facts.

MRS. EDITH DOOLIN
Outlaw Bill Doolin fell in love with a Methodist minister’s daughter who was working at the O.K. Hotel in the outlaw stronghold of Ingalls, Oklahoma. After courting for several months, Edith Ellsworth (left) and Bill eloped to Kingfisher, Kansas, and on March 15, 1893, they married.
Born in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1873, Edith was one of 13 children, only nine of whom survived to adulthood. At five feet six inches tall, Edith Doolin weighed a little over 100 pounds, had dark, penetrating eyes and “moved with a decisive step-with the air of one who knew what she was about.” She stood by her outlaw husband, defending and protecting him to the end.

These last two emigrated to New Zealand with their children c1905 and are my husband's great grandparents.
I am waiting for an answer to an 1881 census lookup for the DOWLING family in Liverpool & hopefully it may give me more on Patrick's birthplace.
As you seem to be conversant with Irish parish records, are you able help me with an ancestor of mine who I am having trouble locating?
His name was Patrick BOLGER born c1824 in Powerstown, Kilkenny, Ireland; son of John BOLGER - merchant (who seems to be still alive in 1864 as per marriage cert for Patrick). I wrote to the local parish priest - Roman Catholic - but he was unable to help me. Where do you suggest I look for further information on this family?
Regards,
Margaret Dowling.

I bought the book entitled, Bill Doolin outlaw O.T. several years ago and found that there are many incorrect statements in the book. It clearly States that the father of Michael was Barton. The father of Michael was John and Ceaty Rowe Doolin. I have the will of John in which he names his children.
Michael's wife Mary was not of the Ruebettom & Cooksey families she was Mary Elizabeth Stephens. She did not die in 1850. She left Michael and after she had been gone a year he sued her for divorce. It became final in July 1855. I have these court records.Michael & Mary were married in Butler County Ky. in 1829. They came to Madison Co. Mo. to claim the farm that Mary had inherited from her parents, Jackey (John) Bowman and Elizabeth (Taylor) Stephens. This line goes back to Peter Stephens who started Harper's Ferry in 1733, then sold it to Harper. I have been collecting records on these two families for several years and all are documented

Brian,
I have a feeling that John Doolin(husband to Ceaty Rowe) might be related to a Maurice Doolin, who was ordered to come to America in 1740 because of a crime commited in Ireland.
I haven't looked at the book but info is in the Journal of the House Of Commons of the Kingdom of Ireland,Volume 7 (1796) pg.56
I have a feeling that abuse and criminal acts was a vicious cycle in this certain family.
PLEASE do not mention this in any forum for my cousin will be very angry, for she does not easily share info. with others when it comes to
Genealogy, because she puts so much time and money into it. BUT she has copies of court Documents stating that Michael Doolin (son of John Doolin) beat and abused his wife.
It is of her Opinion and mine that Mary E. Stephens (wife of Michael) did not leave Michael;but rather was a victim of foul play.If she had left Michael she would have over time contacted her sister or children.she was never seen nor heard of again.
But this is only my opinion.
Keep in touch and let me know of your findings. DALLAS
P.S .I'm related through Michael and Mary's daughter Malinda B. Doolin b.1834 in Madison county,Missouri .she married Daniel Ham( 3rd
marriage), Their daughter Ellendor(Ellie) Francis Ham married Austin Allen Casey. I have a Generation sheet listing all of Michael's Children ;Malinda Doolin's children and the children of her brother Barton Doolin if your interested. -Ends

Here are a couple of pieces of information I have run across which do not help me...maybe someone else.
The Book the will of Mathew Shaup has lots of Dooley hits, such as:
William Boyd was born ca 1710 and Died in January 1794 in Bedford County, VA. His daugther, Mary Boyd (died 1819) married Moses Dooley.
They moved to Kentucky in 1781 and then to Indiana. Their son Rueben (b November 14, 1773) was born in Bedford county, Va. Their son, Silas, was born in Kentucky.
Also from that book, George Dooley, of Bedford Co., VA was the executor of Mathew Shaup's will, which was dated January 29, 1791.
George Dooley left land in Kentucky to his sons, Noah and Aaron but since both were dead, the land went to grandsons Job Sharp and Aaron B. Dooley.
From a different source, here are some Georgia marriages:
Habarsham County:
George Yearwood married Eva Dooley on Oct 8, 1830
John Goodson " Elizabeth Dooley on October 18, 1832
Martin Camp " Lucinda Dooley on Decemebr 23, 1823
James T. Bryan " Elizabeth Ann Dooley on September 2, 1838
William C. Alley " Nancy L. Dooley on October 3, 1838
Franklin Co
John Dooley married Zeberia Gartney on May 17, 1818
Forsyth Co,
James Dooley married Martha Wadkins on February 9, 1840
Elbert Co.
Joseph M. Brantley married Nancy J. Dooley on March 18, 1823
Hope this helps someone.

John Doolin settled in Butler Co., Kentucky around 1800 and is said to have been born in Georgia around 1778. I cannot find any information on Doolins in Georgia or anywhere else before 1800. Any help would be appreciated! I have lots of information to share on the Doolin line in Butler Co., Kentucky from 1800 to the present.

Butler Co., KY is located in Western KY (about) 50 Northwest of Bowling Green, KY. I would guess that this is about 150 miles from Pulaski Co. In the Butler Co. 1810 Census there were three Doolin's listed: Daniel, John and William. My line comes from John Doolin. John married Cathy Rowe (about 1805) and remained in Butler Co. until his death in 1846. I do not know what happened to Daniel and William or how they were related to John. Any additional information is appreciated! -----------------------------------------------------

Subject: Doolin Family
Brian,
I have a feeling that John Doolin(husband to Ceaty Rowe) might be related to a Maurice Doolin, who was ordered to come to America in 1740 because of a crime commited in Ireland.
-Ends
