The name I am looking for is Ellen Dowling. She was a School Teacher in Ireland who came to Canada cir. 1858. And then to the US. I understand she was married on board ship to Charles Boyle. I don't know much more about them. This was told to me by a relative. I am in the process of going to FHC to research census and ship arrivals. If you have any information on anyone who may be this person, I would greatly appreciate it. I realize this is a long shot. But, you never know. email address From: email address (mailto:email address); Sent: 06 February 1999 15:07; To: email address; Subject: Re: Dowling name; Hi Brian, Thanks for your help. I knew it was a long shot. Our cousin had info from her great aunt concerning Charles and Ellen. It is mostly about Charles, but this is what Great Aunt wrote: Ellen and Charles were married on board the ship by the captain on theirway to Canada. Ellen was a School Teacher in Ireland. Charles was indentured to a man as apprentice carpenter(?) He came to United States later. Raised family, Mary, Aunt Kate, Aunt Ellen, Uncle Jim (and maybe Aunt Belle). Charles also had four brothers who left Ireland for the US. Charles as a bachelor, volunteered to bury the yellow fever victims at New Orleans. He was paid in gold, which he took back to Ireland and dropped it into his mother's lap as she shelled peas so she knew he was back. He last saw her running toward the ship with her red hair hanging down her back begging him to stay in Ireland. Aunt Belle used to meet immigrants from Ireland and helped them write home to Ireland. It is touching story, and I wish I knew more. If I find any more info, I will let you know. Feel free to use whatever you would like. Thanks again for your help. Pat email address,

I have an ancestor Mary LUTTON b. c1847,49 in Sydney. Her son Alfred William WEBBER recorded some oral history about his family, in 1959, of which I have a copy. Mary's sister Hanna LUTTON (the eldest daughter) married one Edward DOWLING, a Public Servant, who lived at North Sydney (Berry Bay)...The only children mentioned are Lily m. William PARADICE;
Another daughter married a Solicitor, Clive WILKINSON;
A son, Frank, was on the staff of Goldsborough Mort & Co.
