The three medals for Private A. Dowling, 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards including the 1914 Star, with clasp (6838 Pte. A Dowling. 4/D.Gds); British War and Victory Medals (D-6838 Pte. A. W. Dowling 4-D. Gds.) mounted as worn, good very fine (3) estimate at Dix Noonan Webb auction on 17 February 2021 of £100-£140 but sold for £650 to an unknown bidder.
Arthur W. Dowling served with the 4th Dragoon Guards during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 August 1914.
The regiment landed in France at the outbreak of the First World War as part of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade in the 1st Cavalry Division on 16 August 1914 for service on the Western Front. Perhaps the regiment's most notable engagement was on 22 August 1914, when one of its squadrons became the first members of the British Expeditionary Force to engage the German army in the First World War. Two full troops of British cavalry surprised four patrolling German cavalrymen of the 2nd Kuirassiers at Casteau near Mons. After a brief pursuit the British cavalry killed most of the German patrol. Captain Charles B Hornby D.S.O. was reputed to have become the first British soldier to kill a German soldier, using his sword, and Drummer Edward Thomas is reputed to have fired the first British shots of the war.

Citation Text: (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a United Kingdom and British Empire First World War campaign medal.
The design and ribbon was also adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA in accordance with the decision of the Inter-Allied Peace Conference at Versailles (a 'Winged Victory). A particular form of this historic Greek monument was chosen by each nation, except the nations in the Far East who issued the medal but with a different design. The dates of the war were in every case 1914 to 1918, except that of the British Empire, which gave the dates as illustrated (1914 to 1919).
The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was not awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

AwardMedal-Generic-1914-Star.jpg
The 1914 Star, colloquially known as the Mons Star, is a British World War I campaign medal for service in France or Belgium between 5 August and 22 November 1914. The 1914 Star was authorised under Special Army Order no. 350 in November 1917 and by an Admiralty Fleet Order in 1918, for award to officers and men of the British and Indian Expeditionary Forces who served in France or Belgium between 5 August and midnight of 22–23 November 1914. The former date is the day after Britain's declaration of war against the Central Powers, and the closing date marks the end of the First Battle of Ypres.

Arthur Dowling was 38 and working in Hobart as Secretary of the Tasmania Club when he joined the 12th Battalion in July 1915. His father bred fine Merino sheep on Trefusis before retiring to Roseneath at Ross.
Arthur saw service in the Gallipoli campaign and then served in France and Belgium as part of the 13th Light Trench Mortar Battery. He was hospitalised in September 1917, suffering from shell shock after an incident near Ypres when his mortar was blown out. Five of the team were killed and Arthur was buried by the explosion. He worked behind the lines for the remainder of the war.
On his return, Arthur ran sheep at Runnymede on land obtained as part of the Returned Soldiers Settlement Scheme.
In 1921 he married Kathleen Nairn. Their wedding, in St David’s Cathedral, was attended by the Governor’s family. Arthur and Kathleen made their home in Ross, living is what is now known as the Scotch Thistle Inn. Arthur served on the Ross Council for 25 years, including 14 years as Warden. He died in 1965.
This image shows Arthur’s signature from his enlistment papers.

Kindly shared by Clarke Whitehand on 16 April 2022: "I have been able to date (this photo) to 1915, of a small group of people (including my Grandmother and G. Aunt) that may include “Caroline Eliza Dowling.” I have only been able to identify one of the other people in the photograph to date (bearded chap @ RHS)." Caroline's age at time of 38 years, would suggest he suspects Caroline is 3rd person from left in back row. Do you know more? E-mail me.
