I will attach to this email Mary Dowlings family which is my line Cornelius Franklin and Mary are my great-great-grandparents. I don’t have a death for Mary I am of the belief she died between 1842 when my great-grandmother Mary Theresa was born and 1853 when her eldest daughter Elizabeth married, as civil registration was not compulsory in Australia until 1856 there is no death registration for her. I still have a feeling (although I no feelings don’t count when doing family history) that Mary was Maria b 1802 because this family was very Catholic and Mary is Maria in Latin which would have been their religious dialect, and it seems strange that we seem to be able to find baptism for all the other children but not Mary. I have more information on this family’s children however thought it too big to send all at once, however if you would like more information I would be happy to send it to you. I don’t have a death for Mary I am of the belief she died between 1842 when my great-grandmother Mary Theresa was born and 1853 when her eldest daughter Elizabeth married, as civil registration was not compulsory in Australia until 1856 there is no death registration for her. I still have a feeling (although I no feelings don’t count when doing family history) that Mary was Maria b 1802 because this family was very Catholic and Mary is Maria in Latin which would have been their religious dialect, and it seems strange that we seem to be able to find baptism for all the other children but not Mary. I have more information on this family’s children however thought it too big to send all at once, however if you would like more information I would be happy to send it to you. DEATH OF A GRETA RESIDENT
The Greta district lost one of its oldest and best-respected residents on Tuesday, 21st inst; when Mr Benjamin Franklin, well-known in farming and dairy circles, passed away. Some time back Mr Franklin had a severe attack of influenza, and the worry of bush fires, which broke out in February of last year in the surrounding district, had such an ill effect upon his general health that, to his intimate friends, his appearance occasioned some concern; but nobody was prepared for such a sudden break up as occurred at the beginning of last week. On Monday week Mr Franklin was seized with an attack of acute Diarrhoea, which proved so rapid that a messenger was immediately dispatched to Wangaratta for his spiritual adviser and his medical attendant. The Rev. Father Tobin and Dr. Boyes arrived about midnight, but it was quickly perceived that the sufferer's end was fast approaching. Everything was done that medical science could suggest, but although Dr. Boyes was successful in stopping the attacks of Diarrhoea, MrFranklin gradually sank, and passed quietly away at 6.40 pm onTuesday. The deceased was a native of Baton-Hall, Carlow, Ireland, and at the age of two years, landed with his parents in Sydney in 1839.
When 21 years old he went to the Lambing Flat diggings where he remained a short time, next proceeding to New Zealand. He remained at the gold diggings in the south island for some years, and in 1870 came to Victoria. Next hearing of the marble quarries at Tumut, New South Wales, Mr Franklin was off again, but there he only made a short stay. The North Eastern line being then in course of formation, he applied for, and received, an appointment at bridge building between Benalla and Wangaratta. He assisted in laying the foundation of the present platform. When the line was completed he came to Greta, and in 1876 married his wife, Mrs Bevan, who had then acquired considerable experience in dairying. Tired of a roving life, Mr Franklin settled down on the Fifteen Mile Creek and the fame of Franklin's butter soon spread beyond Greta.
Working steadily and intelligently, Mr and Mrs Franklin soon established themselves in comfortable circumstances, and deceased had one of the prettiest and best-managed properties in the district. Mr Franklin was a staunch adherent of the Roman Catholic church and his purse was ever open to assist any charitable institution in the State. He leaves a widow to mourn his loss. His remains were interred in the Greta Cemetery on Thursday 23 inst., when one of the largest funeral processions that ever followed a corpse to the Greta Burial ground was in attendance. The last rites of the dead were performed by the Rev. Father Tobin, of Wangaratta, and Mr Hanlon of Benalla attended to the funeral arrangements.

I will attach to this email Mary Dowlings family which is my line Cornelius Franklin and Mary are my great-great-grandparents. I don’t have a death for Mary I am of the belief she died between 1842 when my great-grandmother Mary Theresa was born and 1853 when her eldest daughter Elizabeth married, as civil registration was not compulsory in Australia until 1856 there is no death registration for her. I still have a feeling (although I no feelings don’t count when doing family history) that Mary was Maria b 1802 because this family was very Catholic and Mary is Maria in Latin which would have been their religious dialect, and it seems strange that we seem to be able to find baptism for all the other children but not Mary. I have more information on this family’s children however thought it too big to send all at once, however if you would like more information I would be happy to send it to you.
