KILLED BY TRAIN AT SPRINGFIELD
-
Became Bewildered And Stopped Directly In Front of a Wabash Passenger Train - His Family Did Not Know Of His Death For Twenty-four Hours After It Had Occurred - Was Supposed To Be Safe At The Home Of His Daughter - The Funeral Today.
-
At Springfield on Friday morning John DOwling an old and well-known resident of Decatur was killed by a Wabash passenger train and by an odd combination of circumstances came near to being buried in the potter's field as an unknown. He had been visiting his daughters in Springfield and was on the way home from one to the home of the other when he met his death. Each supposing that their father was at the home of the other felt no uneasiness on his account and knew nothing of his death until about twenty-four hours after it had occurred.
Mr. Dowling had been at the home of his daughter Mrs Leroy Ralphs short distance west of Springfield, and on Friday concluded to go to the city and visit his daughter Mrs M J Kennedy. It was while on his way to the home of the latter that he was killed. He was walking between the tracks when a passenger train from the west came up behind him. The engineer gave the whistle signals for the crossing and noticing that the man was dangerously near the track upon which the train was approaching, sounded another warning. Dowling looked back over his shoulder and immediately stepped onto the track which placed him into danger. The train was rounding the curve and the supposition now is that he was bewildered by that and had done what he thought would place him in safety. When the engineer first noticed the man the engine was only about three hundred feet away. A few seconds later he sounded the second whistle and when the unfortunate man stepped into the place of danger there was not time enough to do anything to prevent the accident. His body was tossed high into the air and death must have come to him instantly. The day was warm and the old gentleman when starting to walk the two miles intervening between the houses of his daughters took off his coat so that when his body was picked up there was nothing by which the remains would be identified. Mrs Kennedy did not know that her father was intending to come to the city that day and therefore naturally supposed that he was still at the home of Mrs Ralph and the latter had no reason to think he had not reached the home of Mrs Kennedy in safety. Early Saturday morning Leroy Ralph was at the home of Mrs Kennedy and asked about his father-in-law and learning that he had not appeared there at once suspected what afterward proved true, that the unknown man lying unidentified was his father-in-law. Last night the remains were brought to Decatur and taken to the home of his son Edward Dowling at 434 East Decatur street.
The deceased was a native of Queen's county, Ireland, where he was born 67 years ago, and when a young man came to this country, first stopping at Jacksonville for a number of years he farmed in Morgan and Christian counties and about eighteen years ago came to Decatur, His wife died about twelve years ago and since that time he has made his home with his children, visiting first one and then the other, but Decatur was looked upon as his home.
He is survived by three sons, Edward Dowling of Decatur, John Dowling of Peuria? and James Dowling of Chapaign. His three daughters are Mrs Leroy Ralph and Mrs M J Kennedy of Springfield and Mrs George Rambo of LaPlace? Mrs J Y? Holland is a sister-in-law and John and Humphrey White brothers-in-law of the deceased.
The burial will occur today. The funeral service will be held at St Patrick's Catholic Church at 2 o'clock this afternoon."
