My greatgrandfather Thomas Dowling came from Dublin to New York around 1866. According to family stories, his family owned a meatpacking business in Dublin. he apparently did not keep in contact with his Irish relatives or at least that connection ended with his early death in the late 1880's. I would be interested to know if your aunt is familiar with any Dublin meatpackers named Dowling. I was in Dublin some years ago and found no trace of such a business. Perhaps we have a connection. In any case, thanks for looking into it. For what it is worth, Thomas, Matthew and Michael are the main male names in the family. The women's names vary more but Agnes, Bridget, Margaret, Mary and Frances seem the commonest.

Would any of you folks happen to have a Margaret Dowling m. a Martyn. Reportedly she is from Dublin and his family from Westmeath. The families came to the US to Brooklyn/L.I. circa 1850. I have VERY little info and am just beginning to put pieces together so ANYTHING is helpful. Thank you very much.

Hi Brian,

I only have one Dowling and not much to go on yet. I've been doing
genealogy for about 3 years and on my father's line, have hired some
professional help since I can't get to New York City too often (who
wants to go anyway?!?!)

Margaret Ann Dowling was born in NY, probably in Brooklyn, but almost
certainly Kings County. She was born in June 1856 (per Federal Census
records) and died "about" 1953. The death date is my input and is
anecdotal. Both her parents were born in Ireland, we believe County
Cork.

Margaret Dowling married John Martyn, my grandfather, about 1889, again
from the census record. More info will follow.

Margaret and John had 8 children of whom only 4 were living in 1910
(Census). This was brand new to me and my whole family. We always
thought there were only 4. In 1910 my father was an infant of about 12
to 15 months old. My father died before I knew him and it has been most
challenging to find out anything. But in the past 6 months I have made
remarkable progress having gone from a father with a birth and death
date to a great-grandfather born in 1838 (I believe) in Westmeath. Still
working on it.

Anyway, you are welcome to my Margaret and it would be wonderful if you
had anything on her. If I get any more info I will pass it along.

Good luck!

Mike Martyn.

There may be some connection. My great-grandfather may be a cousin or something to yours. Uriah was born in 1872, and his father was somewhat of a philanderer. Uriah had heard of other brothers and sisters, though he didn't know any of them. I don't know Uriah's fathers name, but I do know he had cut himself off from his own family. I'll keep searching Missouri.

Don, My great-grandfather, Uriah Huston Dowling, was born in missouri in 1872, his father or grandfather Edward Dowling was the son of Irish immigrants. Edward was born in 1805 in Bedford, Ohio. Could there be any connection between my Missouri great-grandfather and yours? I even have a cousin named Don Dowling in Texas!
