She may be buried next to her husband at Estherville Cemetery, but this has not been confirmed.

Her age at next birthday on 13 Jan 1861 (the enumeration date of the 1861 census in Canada East/West), is given as 80 years, making her birth date, 13 July 1781 +/- 6 months. Her sister, Sarah was born about this time, and due to the very low probability that the sisters are twins, and the higher probability that the round age of 80 years in the census is not accurate, it is more likely that Mary Edison was born sometime during the gap in births of her brother, Thomas (b. 1776/7), and sister, Sarah (b. 1780/1). Her birth is estimated at 1778/9.

I have been tracing the Edison,Saxton,Ogden lines and they include Dowling. Your information confirms much of what I have but I thought you may be interested in a few corrections and additions. 1. I do not believe Mary Edison was born in 1773 as tat would make her 48 at he time of the birth of Hannah in 1821. 2. Elizabeth Downing b. 1815 3. George William Hollwood should be Hollywood as it is on his headstone at his gravesite in Vienna, Ontario. Also acording to that headstone, he was born in 1811 and died Aug. 6, 1902. His wife, Elizabeth is also buried there and her stone States b. 1815 d. 1887. 4. Hannah Dowling died 1841. 5. Rosanna Dowling could not have been born in 1779 if her mother was born in 1773. I have no date on Rosanna 6. Philip Dowling's middle name was Wortman 7. William B. Barnum b. Aug.2,1803 d. Dec.17,1885 8. Isaac Williams b. Jan.17,1801 d. Sept. 28,1874 9. George Enoch Downing was born in Bayham Township, Elgin County, Ontario, Canada 10. Can you confirm that Thomas Dowling's wife was Grace Hughes? I have Kate Hodge and information on another item on Genform give another name ???? Check this out and let me know if things fit. - Leo Darmitz, email address -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Message:- From: Leo Darmitz (mailto:email address); Sent: 19 June 2000 15:42; To: Brian Dowling; Subject: Re: Hi Brian, Thanks for the reply Your question of my sources - they are probably the same as yours. However, the sources of the birth of Elizabeth Dowling ( 1815 ) is her grave marker. It is located at Port Burwell, Ontario in a cemetery which was originally called the Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery and referred to recently as Estherville Cemetery. I still have not got the spouse situation of Thomas Dowling straight to my complete satisfaction. Right now I have him having had two; the first Kate Hodge and the second, Electa Brown. I have not found any reference to a Grace Hughs other than what I got from Sue Hines, but the name Grace appears to have been the given name of one of his daughters by Kate Hodge. The only relation I have no reason to question is Electa Brown. Regarding Hollwood vs Hollywood; Go completely with Hollywood as the former appears to have been a typographical error. The name is spelt HOLLYWOOD on George A. Hollywood's grave marker at the Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery. It is also spelt that was on Oscar Hollywood's and Sarah Hollywood's markers at the same cemetery. By the way, I know who Oscar Hollywood was but I do not have a Sarah Hollywood (b. April, 1768. d. Feb. 18, 1855). This could have been a married name. I also have an A.J. Hollywood (b.Jan. 1823 d. Nov. 4, 1898), Samuel Hollywood (b. Sept. 1799, d. Dec. 19, 1807) son of Amos and Mary, and James Hollywood (b. 1848, d. 1871). All of these are buried at Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery. Does this help or just confuse things further? Just figured something out. Your reply for 10. Re Thomas: is the posting by Sue Hines. I have seen that posting and it might be where I got Grace Hughs from. Leo Darmitz

Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 - October 18, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman who has been described as America's greatest inventor. He developed many devices in fields such as electric power generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion pictures. These inventions, which include the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb, have had a widespread impact on the modern industrialized world. He was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of organized science and teamwork to the process of invention, working with many researchers and employees. He established the first industrial research laboratory.

Edison was raised in the American Midwest; early in his career he worked as a telegraph operator, which inspired some of his earliest inventions. In 1876, he established his first laboratory facility in Menlo Park, New Jersey, where many of his early inventions were developed. He later established a botanic laboratory in Fort Myers, Florida in collaboration with businessmen Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone, and a laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey that featured the world's first film studio, the Black Maria. He was a prolific inventor, holding 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as patents in other countries. Edison married twice and fathered six children. He died in 1931 of the complications of diabetes.

Excerpts from
Isabella Valancy Crawford: We Scarcely Knew Her, by Elizabeth McNeill Galvin, 1994

Chapter 2, Paisley

In 1859, … Dr. (( Stephen Dennis )) Crawford applied for the position of Elderslie Township Treasurer. …

On March 18, 1861 the Regent Street and the Queen Street properties owned by the Crawford's were mortgaged for five hundred dollars to Thomas Brightly of Southampton. Shortly after this, Dr. Crawford and his family left the village of Paisley. ...

In 1865 the Paisley Advocate began publishing this newspaper, township council meetings were given some prominence. Eric Parker, through his research on the town, unearthed a scandal involved Dr. Crawford.

In the years 1858 and 1859 Thomas Orchard was Treasurer of the Township of Elderslie. At the close of the latter year he requested an increase in salary, threatening to resign if he did not receive this increase. Council accepted his resignation and advertised for another treasurer. Dr. Crawford, the sole applicant, was appointed to the office; and proposed as his sureties, Messrs. F.O. Lynch Staunton, Enoch C. Dowling and Robert Gilmour. These gentleman were accepted as such, and bonds duly executed. When Dr. Crawford left Paisley and five hundred dollars was discovered missing from the township accounts, an investigative committee was formed by the township council.

A writ was issued December 15, 1863: "in the suit of the Corporation of the Township of Elderslie against Stephen Crawford, F.H. Lynch Staunton, Enoch C. Dowling and Robert Gilmour.

The wealthiest bondsman was Enoch C. Dowling. All his properties (which were considerable) were seized to satisfy the judgement in the Crawford case. These were sold by sheriff to a Goderich lawyer, Lewis A. Moore for two hundred and twenty-five dollars. The financially ruined Enoch C. Dowling committed suicide, leaving behind a pregnant widow.

On December 27, 1865 the Crawford properties (3 parcels) were acquired by Robert Dick from Thomas Brighty through power of sale.

Further scandal came to light. In 1866, a Mr. W.C. Bruce was elected Deputy Reeve. He was accused of having whiskey brought to the nomination meeting, of being involved in a road-grant scheme involving fraud, and of receiving money from Dr. Crawford in 1860 and 1861 which he knew to be township funds. This last accusation was refuted by a Mr. Featherstonehaugh: "In a conversation held some years since with Dr. Crawford, he told me that he was wrongfully accused of having paid township money to you ( W.C. Bruce ) and that the money which he had paid you was the proceeds of a mortgage, and I think also, as well as my memory serves, that he had some of it from the old country."

… The Crawford family disappeared from Bruce County in disgrace.

Leo Darmitz

============================
Her name appears in the will of her father, Dennis Dowlin, between sisters, Phoebe Barnum (b. 13 Mar 1802) and Sarah Williams (b. c.1806). Her brother, Peeress was also born around the time of sister, Sarah (b. c.1806). The birth-year inscribed on Mary Ann's gravestone is 1800, but I am inclined to believe it is wrong, and that she was born c.1804, more consistent with her age in the 1861 Canada census (b. July 1806 +/- 6 mos., not yet 55 years old on 13 Jan 1861), and filling in the gap between her siblings. The Oakes family gravestone may have been erected long after her death, possibly by a grandchild, and her birth-year estimated.

Leo Darmitz

Leo Darmitz
