Subject: Dowling

Hi Brian,

I only have one Dowling and not much to go on yet. I've been doing
genealogy for about 3 years and on my father's line, have hired some
professional help since I can't get to New York City too often (who
wants to go anyway?!?!)

Margaret Ann Dowling was born in NY, probably in Brooklyn, but almost
certainly Kings County. She was born in June 1856 (per Federal Census
records) and died "about" 1953. The death date is my input and is
anecdotal. Both her parents were born in Ireland, we believe County
Cork.

Margaret Dowling married John Martyn, my grandfather, about 1889, again
from the census record. More info will follow.

Margaret and John had 8 children of whom only 4 were living in 1910
(Census). This was brand new to me and my whole family. We always
thought there were only 4. In 1910 my father was an infant of about 12
to 15 months old. My father died before I knew him and it has been most
challenging to find out anything. But in the past 6 months I have made
remarkable progress having gone from a father with a birth and death
date to a great-grandfather born in 1838 (I believe) in Westmeath. Still
working on it.

Anyway, you are welcome to my Margaret and it would be wonderful if you
had anything on her. If I get any more info I will pass it along.

Good luck!

Mike Martyn

Subject: Re: Dowling

Brian,

Yes, I realize Margaret was older than we'd like to see. And excuse me,
my father's name was James Edward Martyn.

I am not convinced that all the dates and Federal Census data is
correct. It all needs to be corroborated. Census records are notoriously
erroneous. The 1910 Census has Margaret aged 46 which would put her at
about 45 (i.e. b. 1865) when my father was born. However, the 1920
Federal Census has her birth date as June 1856. I suspect (and I will
find out) that my contact in NYC may have transposed June 1865 to June
1856. Does that sound reasonable?

I have John (my grandfather) born October 1859 in the 1900 Census which
ages him to about 50 in 1909, which is a little better than 71 for
fathering children!. He disappears between the 1910 and 1920 Census' so
he died somewhere in there and we are narrowing in on it. He died
somewhere between 50 and 60 years of age (there abouts).

Yes there is a King's County, NY and it encompasses Long Island and I
think Brooklyn too, which is where my family hails from. Any locations
you wish information on please let me know and I'll get you any
information you need. King's County has been around a long time, dating
back to the 1600's, I believe. It's makeup and composition has changed
over the years. If you want more info, let me know.

Finally, the SSDI entries for Margaret Martyn. I wish I could lay claim
to them. My understanding is that Margaret Martyn (daughter of John and
Margaret) died before my father did, which was in 1954. She was
institutionalized. Reportedly she was in an insane asylum and my father
was too embarrassed to ask for time off for her funeral. There was a
family stigma attached to such things back then. If I read the clues
correctly, she was at their home in 1910 and not listed as "deaf or
dumb", which was a required Census entry for 1910. In 1920 I found a
Census entry for Margaret Martyn in a Children's Hospital. I suspect
this is the same Margaret Martyn, which States that she is 19 years old,
which is just about right. My guess is that she either contracted a
disease that afflicts the brain (spinal meningitis) or had an accident
and suffered head trauma that left her quite impaired. In any event she
is not in the household in 1920 and her death is while my father was
alive which leaves the SSDI entry for this Margaret out.

Also, the SSDI lists wives by their maiden name, but I am sure there are
many that are listed as their married name. But the Jan 1969 date of
death is also too late to be Margaret Dowling, my grandmother. This
would make her well over 100 years old. Also, again, my father attended
her funeral so she had to have died before 1954.

Good luck and keep me posted. If I can help you on this side of the
Atlantic let me know. I am anxiously planning a trip to Ireland either
August of this year or March of next.

I hope I've satisfactorily answered your questions.

Happy Hunting!

Mike Martyn.
