Matt;
The Dowling Coat of arms that I have has a large lions Head on the top and as yoy said there is two gold rings around the neck. below that is a red and white bar that is directly under the head. thise is framed on the left and right by a green and gold vine. Below the red and white bar is a blue helmet surrounded by gold under the helmet is a shield with a gold boarder on the top is a blue field approximately 1/4th of the distance from the tom and on the blue field is a gold lion centered and a gold figure that looks like the club from a deck of playing cards. the rest of the shield is red with a tree in the middle with clusters of red balls on the tree and what appears to be the roots of the tree growing down towards the bootem of the shield. under the shield is a gold ribbon with the name DOWLING in a semicircle. The information that I received says that the Dowlings were one of the "Seven Septs of Leix". In the confiscations that were part of the English policy in Ireland after the "Flight of the Earls" the leading members of the Dowling Clan were transplanted to Tarbert in north Kerry in 1607 . Although they never established in the new home the power and influence they held in their ancient territory of Leix, some of them prospered and from these the dowlings of Kerry and Limerick spring. Notwithstanding this break up of the ancient clan holdings and traditional way of life, many of the rank and file of the Dowling family managed to remainnear thier ancestral possessions in Leix, and not only flourished but spread out to the adjoining counties of Carlow. Kilkenny and Wicklow. The fact that there are four place names called Ballydowling (or Dowling's town)in Wicklow is ample evidence of their vitality and power in these areas.
I have some more info that I will send later but this should tell yo some about our history. My Grandfatheer was John Russell Dowling and I can trace him back to Joplin Missouri where he was born in the late 1800's. He married Annie Mae Wright who was from Arkansas and moved west to Ok, Texas and then to CA. If you have any more Genealogy on the Dowlings what ever it might be I would sure like to see it maybe I can find out where we meet. Thanks

They had serveral children: Ora, Everet, James, Willard, Fanny,Irene, and of course John jr.. and they mmoved to California during the late 20's to the Los Angeles area ant then to the area of Bakersfield and Porterville. His children do not have any Idea about his family in Missouri or any brothers or sisters. Maybe you might have so information I don"t. I need all the help I can get.

Matt;
Thanks

Matt;
Thanks

Hi Shirley/JW: This is my Dowling family! I have been researching them for a number of years, have them on the "Tornado" as "Doolan", in Oswego NY in 1855 as "Doyling", in Ottawa IL 1860 census as "Doulin" (no James, he died 1858/9); etc. Are you descended from Daniel Warren and Mary Ann Dowling? I have considerable info on many of these Dowling descendants. My line comes from Bridget Dowling, m Thomas Reid, Ottawa. Please contact me if you would like to exchange data! Jean Gobel, Tacoma, WA

Hi Brian, I haven't been back here for some time, thinking any followup messages would be sent to my email addr....Oh well.
My Dowlings are James (ca 1800) and Mary (Sullivan) (ca 1813)Dowling, and their children
Margaret (1845),
John (1848),
Bridget(1850),
Catherine/Kate(1852) and Kate's twin, think, James.
All believed to be born in Co Kildare, IRE, all birthdates are approximate, not documented. James Jr was on the ship "Tornado" in 1854, age 2 yr, but not on the 1855 census of Oswego.
I assume he died. Also with them on the ship was daughter Mary Ann(1838) and her husband Daniel Warren. Just recently I learned of another daughter,
Sarah (1836) married to James Riley. Don't believe they were on the passenger list, and I've not looked for them in Oswego since I didn't know about them when I did some research there.
On the 1855 census with the Dowlings is their oldest known son Patrick (1835) who appears to have been in Oswego 2 years, coming before mom & dad & siblings. Perhaps he came with Rileys, or came *to* them if they were already there. James Sr appears to have died in Ottawa IL 1858/59, Mary is head of household on 1860 census. Mary Dowling and Daniel Warren are both listed on 1865 State census which lists only heads of households.
I have considerable data on descendants, if these Dowlings are of interest to you!
