Thanks for your reply. sorry it took me awhile to respond. Work has been overwhelming my time lately.
I have a baptismal certificate for Richard Dowling Sept 1, 1848. His father is listed as Patt Dowling and his mother's maiden name is Anne Behan. It was issued in Ballynafagh. A witness is Charles Dowling of Dublin. So I think your line of thought about Ballynafagh is correct for my lineage.
I also have a marriage certificate I was able to locate while in Dublin. Richard Dowling of Clane maried Ellenora Soohan of Straffan in 1877 at St. Patrick's Chapel in Celbridge . His Father is listed as Patrick Dowling a Labourer. Ellenora Soohan has a father listed as Michael Soohan, job as a herder. I have another document from the church records that shows Ellenora's mother's maiden name as Maria Merriman. And Richard's mother is Anne Bean. I assume this Richard is the same as the one above that I have a baptismal certificate for. I also assume one of the documents has Anne Behan or Anne Bean's name misspellled. Also found a witness named Anne Merriman on another document that is for William Merriman marrying in the same church in Nov., 1877. I suspect they are cousins of Ellenora's. Perhaps her mother (Maria Merriman ) was sister to (Anne Merriman) and William would be Anne's son.
I have a birth certificate for my grandfather, Patrick Joseph Dowling, son of the above Richard and Ellenora was born in 1880 in Clane. It lists Ballynafagh too. There is an older son, Michael Dowling born 1878 with same info, except the spelling for Ellenora's Soohan is spelled "Souhan". So I assume here that one of the documents are mispelled too. I cannot find any documents listing passage to U.S..However, I did find them in a New Jersey, U.S. census in 1885. So they emmigrated somwwhere between 1880 and 1885. And Ellenora's name is listed as Ellen and maiden name spelled Soohan.
On most of the documents I was able to obtain, the surname of Hart appears often. I don;t know if that helps you or not, but I am trying to give you as much detailed info as I can.
That is as far as I have gotten. I would be grateful for any info you could provide. I visited Clane, Ballynafagh, Prosperous and Celbridge looking at graveyards and tombstones. I found some things but can't be sure if they are indeed my relatives. I had the privlege of walking down the aisle of St. Patrick's Chapel where my great grandparents were married. New building, same lcation with a monument erected in memory of the older mass house. That was quite an honor to have something come to fruition after all that research!
