I am taking you up on your invitation to correspond with other Dowlings. Thanks for the opportunity.

One reason for writing is I saw in a Gen Forum posting by someone that your father was R.A. Dowling, author of "A Dowling Family Of The South". As a WEBTV is not JAVA capable I am unable to view your family tree. My interest lies in the fact that I had contact with the R.A. Dowling family when I was searching my father's roots in 1986. My oldest sister and I also had connections with Mrs. Beulah Barnet Dowling, who was a major contributor of the information contained in the book. Therefore I am curious to know if you are, in fact, the son of R.A. Dowling, author. He also owned a radio station (WOOF) in Georgia, U.S.A. It has created a bit of nostalgia on my part.

A second reason for writing is to request if within your vast storehouse of Dowling information you may have a record(s) of an Emma A. Dowling, born 1855 and her son, Hamilton (my father) born 1881, both born in England. They came to the U.S. probably between 1881-83. I have done extensive research through the use of paid researchers , web sites, etc. for birth, death, marriage, ship's passenger lists and other assorted records, to no avail. Any assistance you can provide would be
most helpful and much appreciated.

side of the pond and / or the wrong time period; however, they will go in my data bank. Of course genealogy has two purposes -- finding 'em where they are and where they "ain't".

Yes, my father's info really is brief. His remembrances were also brief. Even though I was the youngest of 7 in the family I believe most of his memories were passed down to me. He remembered his mother went through much pain and discomfort just prior to her death and at the funeral he recalled a lady pointing out to him another lady, and said "That's your aunt over there". Who she was is still unknwn. My father listed his birth date as May 5, 1881 on his enlistment papers when he entered the US Navy in 1900. He also listed England as his birthplace. In 1886 when he was moved from the Richmond Almshouse to the Richmond Home for Boys the entry there stated his father was dead. In 1904 when he applied for a license to marry mother, he listed his father as "unknown". The fact he was only 5 yrs of age when entering the Boys Home or the information came from his mother may account for the differences.

Emma's Certificate of Death contained -- dod April 25, 1892; place of d - Almshouse, Richmond, VA; full name - Emma A. Dowling; age - 37;
married; occupation - seamstress; birthplace - England; length of time in city - 9 years; admitted to Almshouse July 15, 1886. From this it
would indicate she was born 1855 - England - came to this country 1883 or sooner. Where they were between 1883 and 1886 is not really known.

In summary my only documentation consists of daddy's Navy enlistment papers, his admittance record in the Richmond Home for Boys, and Emma's death certificate.

I think you will agree I have a rather unique grandmother / father situation, so it is difficult, at least for me, to tell their story in
any concise manner. It seems each statement that's made generates a multitude of questions, so that's the reason I've given you the full
load.

Thanks for indulging me and also thanks for the other information. I'm definitely not ready to take on Ireland any time soon.

Great Work Pam, you flushed out more Dowling information than has ever been assembled in one short period of time. Kudos to you as well as to those who submitted the info.
I heartily agree with some of the previous statements that there are Dowlings out there that are very elusive. A good example are the three subjects. According to a certificate of birth issued by the
Brooklyn Maternity ( New York,USA) , Hamilton was b May 19, 1881 to Emma, age 26, born in England, her full and maiden name was listed as Emma Fortescue. James, (father) age 26, born in Ireland, his occupation is listed as hatter.
Research of census records, city directories, ships passenger lists, etc. have been negative.
Any assistance, advise would be greatly appreciated.

John Dowling had four sisters ,Anne died 1850, Mary died 1852 Bridgit and Catherin who died in the USA in 1849. He had three brothers, Peter who died 1847, James who died 1840 and Michael who attended St Johns University New York and later taught in a school for deaf boys in Illonois. My records say he died in 1885 in the USA.
