"The death of Ann Dowling, one of Emmett's pioneer settlers, occurred Tuesday evening January 3, at the home of her son, Edward Dowling at Emmett, Kansas. She was 88 years of age and is numbered among the many that suffered the trials and hardships of early pioneer day.

Mrs. Dowling was born at Queens County, Ireland in 1834. At an early age with her parents, she went to England where she lived until her departure for America in 1854 where they located in Salem, Indiana. The same year she was united in marriage to Jeremiah Dowling.

Later in 1873, they came to Kansas and settled on a farm near Emmett. Ten children were born to them, five having died in their youth. Those left to mourn the loss of their mother are: Jeremiah S. Dowling of Leavenworth, Kansas, Edward Dowling of Emmett, John W. Dowling of Kansas City, Anna Geretry of Colorado Springs, and Hugh Dowling of Spokane, Washington. She was also survived by 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Holy Cross Church in Emmett and the remains brought to St. Mary's and laid to rest in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Six grandsons of the deceased acted as pallbearers."
