    Citation Text: DOWLING, Henry William Henry William Dowling, 77, of East Hartford, very loving husband, father, and grandfather, died Saturday, (May 13, 2006) at St. Francis Hospital. He was born in Middletown the son of the late Henry William Dowling Sr. and Mary (Bennett) Dowling and lived in East Hartford 43 years and was formerly of Rocky Hill where he was a dairy farmer and a member of the Rocky Hill Vol. Fire Dept. Co. #2. He later retired from the Mepp Tool Co. in Glastonbury. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Marjorie (Miller) Dowling; three daughters, Mary Lou Dowling of Vernon, Kathleen Strietelmeier and her husband, Michael of Enfield, and Norah Furlong and her husband, William of Columbia; four grandsons, Michael and his wife, Jessica Strietelmeier, Matthew Strietelmeier, and Ben and Sam Furlong; a sister, Mary Klukas of New Britain; a special sister-in-law and brother-in-law; Jeanne and Bill Ciotto of Wethersfield; loving nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Joan and Edward Pacholski of Rocky Hill. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen and his twin sister, Henrietta; also a brother, John; and a son, John. There will be A Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, May 17, 10 a.m. at St. Christopher's Church, 580 Brewer St., East Hartford. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. From a letter by Jean Bransfield-Bernhardt. John with his brothers Daniel, Denis and Michael (1818) according to newspaper reports, went to the U.S.A. in the 1840's. With his brothers he worked on farms and in brownstone quarries in Connecticut and then went seeking gold in California.
He returned to Connecticut not wealthy but able to afford his own property. John and Michael bought adjoining farms in Rocky Hill, Connecticut which they farmed and enjoyed until there demise at the ages of 101 and 102. They were both instrumental in establishing the local Roman Catholic Church in their town where they were astute businessmen. Children: Mary, Ellen, Teresa, Margaret and Henry William.

    "ROCKY HILL MEN ARE 94 AND 97 - DOWLING BROTHERS DUG GOLD IN CALIFORNIA - HELD CAPTIVE BY THE INDIANS

    DANIEL DOWLING: Siblings: Daniel, Denis, John(1821) and Michael (1818).
    According to news reports, they went to the U.S.A. in the late 1840's.
    Daniel, however, met with an accident during his stay in California in the Gold Rush. Prior to that the brothers worked on farms and in brownstone quarries in Connecticut. They then went West seeking gold to return, not wealthy but, able to afford property.

    Michael (1818) bought a farm in Rocky Hill, Connecticut adjoining his brother John. Michael married Anne born in Ireland in Connecticut in 1861. Michael and John worked the farms until their demise at the ages of 101 and 102.
    They were instrumental in establishing the Roman Catholic Church in Rocky Hill. Both were astute businessmen and leaders of the community. They had one son who died at a young age.

    DANIEL DOWLING: Siblings: Daniel, Denis, John(1821) and Michael (1818).
    According to news reports, they went to the U.S.A. in the late 1840's.
    Daniel, however, met with an accident during his stay in California in the Gold Rush. Prior to that the brothers worked on farms and in brownstone quarries in Connecticut. They then went West seeking gold to return, not wealthy but, able to afford property.

Twenty or twenty-five years ago probably nearly all of the inhabitants of Rocky Hill knew Michael Dowling, known as "Mike" Dowling, and his brother John. However, most of the knewcomers and many of the younger generation living here at present are unaware of the existence of these two venerable old gentlemen, who have lived here for nearly sixty years, on their farm located on what is now known as West Street, about a mile and a half West of the South School house.

They were born in Queen's County Ireland, the date of Michael's birth being September 29 1820. John being born about three years later. Michael is probably the oldest man in town and it is unusual to see two brothers who have attained the ages of these two. They came to America about 1850, locating in Cromwell where they lived for a while, working on different farms, and in the Brownstone Quarries in Portland. Their parents were Henry and Mary Dowling. There were three other brothers who were located in California and in 1853, Michael, attracted by tales of the fabulous gold finds in that State, started for San Francisco.

Several weeks were consumed in making a trip at that time, the voyage being made to Panama with a stop-over at Cuba, thence by train from Panama to Aspinwall where the trip was finished by steamboat on the Pacific Ocean. Mr Dowling did not find gold as plentiful as he expected, but he was successful enough to encourage his brother who followed him to California a year later. Michael's tales of the difficulties encountered are of much interest. Merchants, mechanics and farmers existed only to supply the miners and the gold of the mines was the chief asset of California. Most of the able-bodied male population were living in the mineral belt. When Mr Dowling arrived in California, the population of the new State was about 300,00 and more than $260,000,000 had been dug from the gold fields. Six or seven years before this time, there were only about 500 Americans in California. The stories of the fortunate wealth seekers had gone abroad to the world and men were prepared to believe anything about California.

While gold was plentiful, the cost of living, wearing apparel and tools was so exorbitant that little could be saved. Mouldy biscuit sold for $1 a pound, port for $2 a pound, flour for $1 a pound, and as Mr Dowling expressed it, you would have to pay a dollar for enough sugar to fill your breast pocket. Working shirts cost three or four dollars apiece and boots were six ounces of gold - a pair, while an ordinary shovel cost $4. Mining camps of tents and rude cabins rose rapidly beside the rivers. At first, gold dust, provisions and tools were safe without police, but later everyone carried a gun. Those who were very fortunate often indulged in curious and expensive whims and extravagancies, feeling sure that their claims would continue to yeald treasure. Men who had been brought up to keep sober and earn $16 a month and save half of it, went to California, found rich claims, earned several hundred dollars a month, of which they might have saved three forths, but spent every cent of it.

The Dowling brothers had many exciting experiences and were once captured and held captive for several days by Indians. They saw a man hanged for killing a Free Mason, and Michael says that for many nights afterward he did not go to sleep without seeing the man hanging in his dreams.

The brothers returned to Connecticut in 1860, buying the farm where they now live, on April 20th of that year. Michael maried Ann Dowling (she not being related to him although having the same name) fifty-seven years ago and Mrs Dowling died late in December, 1916 after having been married fifty-seven years. They had no children. John Dowling married Mary Twoomey who died about thirty-five years ago. They had five children, all of whom are living. They are Mrs Edward Bransfield of Portland, Miss Mary Dowling of Rocky Hill, Mrs Wallace Smith of New Britain, Mrs Michael Daly of Wallingford, and Henry Dowling Rocky Hill. There are also several Grand-children John, Harry, Edward, William and Mary Bransfield of Portland, John and Joseph Daly and Jack Moffatt. The farm consisting of 125 acres, which was bought by the brothers in 1860, is now owned and run by John Dowling's son Henry.

Both brothers are unusually hale and hearty for men of their ages. They posed for "The Courant" representative and notwithdstanding the near zero weather, seemed to have little fear of catching cold. Michael Dowling, in particular, is active mentally and can recall dates better than the majority of men of many years his junior. He was selectman at one time.

Until recently, both brothers have been regular attendants at St. James Roman Catholic Church, but the severe cold weather now keeps them shut in. They are anxiously waiting for spring when they can get out of doors once again."

Michael died, apparently, aged 102 years when he fell over outside his farmhouse in Rocky Hill. The farm was left his brother John's son Henry.

    DANIEL DOWLING: Siblings: Daniel, Denis, John(1821) and Michael (1818).
    According to news reports, they went to the U.S.A. in the late 1840's.
    Daniel, however, met with an accident during his stay in California in the Gold Rush. Prior to that the brothers worked on farms and in brownstone quarries in Connecticut. They then went West seeking gold to return, not wealthy but, able to afford property.

    Michael (1818) bought a farm in Rocky Hill, Connecticut adjoining his brother John. Michael married Anne born in Ireland in Connecticut in 1861. Michael and John worked the farms until their demise at the ages of 101 and 102.
    They were instrumental in establishing the Roman Catholic Church in Rocky Hill. Both were astute businessmen and leaders of the community. They had one son who died at a young age.

From a letter by Jean Bransfield-Bernhardt. Denis with his brothers Daniel, John (1821) and Michael (1818) according to newspaper reports, went to the U.S.A. in the 1840's. With his brothers he worked on farms and in brownstone quarries in Connecticut and then went seeking gold in California.
He returned to Connecticut not wealthy but able to afford his own property, a grocery store in Cromwell, Connecticut. In the 1860's he returned to California with his Californian wife who missed her home State.
