Citation Text: Hello again Brian, Some months ago, May '99, you were kind enough to help me with the search for my Dowlings. At the time I only had John Dowling, b. ca 1840, son of Martin Dowling and Johanna Freiling from somewhere in Ireland which you suggested was not nearly adequate to begin a search, something about "haystacks" of paper and data.
We finally got to the RC church in Hamilton Ontario to look for us and just before Christmas they sent a copy of John's marriage registration. The document lists his parents as Martin Dolan and Johanna Furlong of County Wexford. If you will recall we had a Johanna "Freiling" as our interpretation of handwriting on a Canadian Census form. I understand the Furlongs are many in County Wexford with Furlong being one of the early Norman immigrants to this part of Ireland.
I have had no luck with finding an Irish researcher with whom I have any amount of confidence. If I could get it down to some possible Wexford locations I would have a place to start. Do you have anything on the Dolans (Dowlings) of Wexford? Would it be possible for you list the Martin Dolans in Griffith's Evaluation for Wexford and other adjacent counties?
I would sincerely appreciate any information or suggestions. - Thank you John - USA

I cannot believe you turned around that much data and commentary in so short a time. Thank you very much for your time and interest in our branch of the family.
Yes, John Dowling was RC and probably not wealthy but he did survive the famine somehow. He is listed as a Labourer in the several censuses we have records for so no disguinished career, other siblings not known, and family rank not known.
The parents names came from John's Canadian records for his marriage and death. I have a Canadian researcher doing the leg work as I live and work in Florida. I have copies of marriage and death regs as well as his will. Yes, he was illiterate as shown by the X on his will.
What I do have is 30 some years of residence in Hamilton Ontario as a Labourer; we think at the local steel mill. He owned two houses at his death and had six children all of whom it seems have done well. Most all of the family attended St. Mary Cathedral and are buried in the same cemetery. We are contacting the living descendants to glean as much as possible relative to the location in Ireland and other data.
You mentioned the Freiling name as a possible chance against the "haystacks" of data. I agree and will keep you informed of the developments for your master data base. The family name changes are as follows:
Catherine Dunn Dowling, b. 1845, Ireland, parents Matthew and Mary Malone Dunn, m. 1865 Ont., d. Ont., 1920
Matthew b. 1869, d. USA 1903, glassblower
Johanna b. 1870, d. Ont. 1921, tailoress
Martin b. 1871, d. Ont. 1925, iron moulder
James b. 1872, d. Ont. 1948, iron moulder
John b. 1874, d. Ont. 1923, glass blower
Josephine or Minnie or Mary, b. 1879, d. ?, tailoress
Thomas b. 1883, d. ?, iron worker
I would be interested in a referral to an Irish researcher, I understand you might not want to make a recommendation but perhaps just a few names for my file at my risk.
Thank you again

Hi list,
I am searching for the parents or ancestors of my gg grandfather John
Hanberry. I believe they emigrated from Galway or Athenry, Ireland in the
early 1700s. John was born in Burke County, Georgia in 1794 and as a young
man moved to South Carolina. A "John Handberry" owned land in Burke County in
the 1730s. This could be my John's grandfather. John married Eleanor
Dowling in South Carolina and her family was known to be from Ireland. Their
son married Honora Conniffe who was from Ireland. I will address these two
families in separate queries.
If you know of anyone with information about Hanberrys in Ireland please
contact me. If there is a phone book address for any Hanberrys in Athenry or
Galway, please contact me.
Thanks,
Chuck Hanberry.

He had a single daughter, Miss Nancy. James MARTIN came to the county in 1834 and married her. In 1836 DOOLY and his two sons and Henry and James MARTIN moved to Arkansas. In 1838 they all moved back. Henry MARTIN settled the place that John DOWLING and his mother now live on. The DOOLY's settled north of Tunnel Hill near Dr. Lee's place. About two years after they came back James MARTIN and the DOOLY's moved to Alabama.
Buck DOOLY, a nephew of Wm. DOOLY, was in the county before 1837. He lived everywhere and swapped horses all the time. He was killed at Tunnel Hill in 1853.

About two years after they came back James MARTIN and the DOOLY's moved to Alabama.
Buck DOOLY, a nephew of Wm. DOOLY, was in the county before 1837. He lived everywhere and swapped horses all the time. He was killed at Tunnel Hill in 1853.

Excerpts from the book "Early Settlers of Catoosa, Whitfield, Walker and Floyd (Armuchee)"
W. DOOLY came to the county in 1832. Martin CAMP, Simpson DOVER, Thomas BRYANT, Henry MARTIN and perhaps one or two others who had married his daughters came with him.

Subject: Re: Dowling towns
Confirmed: Community of Dowling, Ontario. Population looks to be between
1,000 to 5,000. It¹s about 40 km west of Sudbury Ontario.
What I meant by searching from the ³bottom up² was that, for the moment,
I¹m concentrating on my Canadian connections. My great grandfather
William Dowling came from Ireland (I don¹t know where yet), and he
married an Ontario-born woman named Lucy of French-Canadian descent ( I
don¹t know her maiden name yet).
My intention is to learn as much as I can about their life in Canada and
trace all their children, that is, my grandfather and all his siblings
and their children before I start tracing Irish connections.
You see, my grandfather died when my father (an only child) was five
months old, so my dad didn¹t learn much first-hand from his old man! And
my father was estranged from my mom almost from the time I was born, and
he¹s been dead for decades, so I didn¹t learn much from my old man,
either.
If you can believe it, my father¹s half-sisters (all over 70 years of
age) have been able to give me some clues about my grandfather (their
mother¹s first husband, for god¹s sake!) and some of his siblings.
Thanks to these women, I tracked down William and Lucy and five of their
children in the Ontario 1891 Census. I felt like I had been parachuted
into a family reunion! And I¹ve been hooked ever since (about a whole
month!)
Before tracing my roots to Ireland, I¹m dying to find out why Lucy moved
to Souris Manitoba, where according to the Manitoba Census of 1901, she
was listed as a widow living with two of her children and a mystery
grandchild.
Yes, that¹s it -- lots of little mysteries to solve. I love it!
Anyway, that¹s a rather lengthy explanation of ³from the bottom up².
By the way, I enjoyed your website. Boy, my ignorance of Ireland is
pretty frightening. But I¹ll remedy that in time.
Happy hunting, Janice Dowling.
