Desmond was very involved with Michael Collins and the free-state movement. He was able to construct radio links with Dublin when Roger Casement was arrested after landing arms at Bannow Bay in Kerry. And again, when Michael Collins was shot in Cork. Emmet Dalton in a radio interview in the early 1980s spoke of the genius of a young engineer called Desmond Dowling. When the treaty giving England the six counties, was signed Desmond was disappointed. He left Ireland after the death of Michael Collins, to start a new life in America. In 1929 he got pneumonia and died in New York.

Maurice attended Clongowes Wood college from 1910 to 1914. He became a Jesuit and was ordained in Milltown, Dublin. He was a Chaplin in the British Army during the second world war. He spent most of his life in Chikuni in Zambia, teaching Maths subjects in Canisius College. He was a terrific gardener and grew fantastic crops, including oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits, irrigating the land in a masterful fashion! Chikuni is about 150 miles from Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Canisius college was the mother-house of the Jesuits with smaller missions all around. He has been described as “one of the mighty founding fathers and he started a few different missions here in the South Province”.
