In 1798 George Dowling, working as a shopman in a Bristol drapers, appears to have been caught for stealing fabric and stockings. Some of these items ended up in pawn with pawnbroker Michael Passmore and Catherine Morgan. These stockings, worth two shillings (http://inflation.iamkate.com/ says this is the equivalent of £14.28 in 2018), appear part of theft of serveral items from James Wilder-Bream and Joseph Thomas Lockier, partners and linen drapers. The total hoard, valued at £2:7:6d included fabric.

George was charged and committed to the Bristol Gaol for several Felonies and Misdemeanors and the prosecutors and Witnesses being bound in recognizances to appear and prosecute at the next General Quarter Session of the Peace to be held in and for Bristol. It appears that the case was heard at Bristol Quarter Sessions on on 4 April 1798 where George was sentenced to 7 years transportation. He was kept in custody pending the execution of that sentence.

"In obedience to His Majesty's Commands signified by his Grace the Duke of Portland, one of His Majesty's principal Secretaries of State. We hereby humbly certify that at the General Quarter Session of the peace held in and for the City of Bristol and County of the same City, on Monday the sixteenth Day of April one thousand seven hundred and nonety eight, before Thomas Daniel Esquire Mayor of said City, Edward Price, George Danberry, Lori Ames John Nobleand James Harvey Esquires Aldermen of the same City Justices asigned and soforth (.)

George Dowling was indicted for feloniously stealing three pair of Cotton Stockings value five shillings and sixpence, six yards of printed calico value twelve shillings, eight yards of printedcalico value twelve shillings, and six yards opf muslin walue eighteen shillings, the property of James Wilder Broom and Joseph Thomas Lockier, partners in Trade; and on the Trial of the Indictment the following evidence was given:

James Wilder Bream, being sworn, said, "I am a Linen Draper in Bristol, in partnership with Joseph Thomas Locvkier. The Prisoner lived with us a a Shopman from October to February past. Having mislaid several articles out of our shop at different times, I suspected the Prisoner and had him taken into custody by tyhe proper Officers on such suspicion. As son as the Prisoner was taken to Mr Light's (the House of one of the Constables) and charged with having taken various Articles from our shop, he said he would confess every thing, and immediately wrote down a list of the Articles.

The list was as follows:
six yards of the five quarter printed calico,
eight yards of four quarter printed calico,
five yards of five quarter worked muslin, and
two pair of cotton stockings.

He told us he had given the several Articles to two girls of the town, by name, Powell and Johnson. I, with my Partner, the Prisoner and two Constables went to the Apartments of Powell, where we found one ell-wide White Gown: It was our property; and the Prisoner confess'd it was a gown he had taken from our shop. We found likewise one pair of white cotton stockings: We had some exactly of the same sort, and the Prisoner said he had stolen them. We did not find any other of the Articles mentioned in the Indictment. Afterwards Light (the Constable) and I went to Johnson's, but found nothing there. We found a muslin Gown, at a Pawn-Brokers in Saint James's Bristol: the muslin the Prisoner confessed he had stolen from us. We found a printed caligo Gown at another Pawn Brokers. All the things we found were the property of my Partner and self: the Prisoner confessed to have taken them. The Prisoner gave me the Key of his Box, the night he was taken into Custody. On searching the Box, I found one pair of Cotton Stockings with our mark on them." (the stockings found being produced in court.) "I know them to be the property of myself and Partner by the mark." - The Prisoner did not ask the Witness any question.

Michael Passmore, being sworn, said, "I am a Pawn-Broker, living in Groville Street in the City. I know the Prosecutor (Mr Bream) he was at my house in February last; he brought a Duplicate in the name of Johnson. I had a Gown in pawnin that name." (The Gown is produced in court) - Mr Bream called up again and swore it was the property of himself and his partner, said, the Prisoner acknowledgedthe Calico of thhis Gown and described the pattern. Citation Detail: Description:Report of James Worrall, Bristol Town Clerk on behalf of the Bristol magistrates, on 2 collective petitions (Richard Dowling and Sarah Dowling, prisoner's parents; and 3 people, from Henley in Oxfordshire) and 1 individual petition (Duke of Clarence) on behalf of George Dowling, warehouse assistant, Indicted at the Bristol Quarter Sessions, on 16 April 1798, for stealing stockings and fabric, value £2:8:6, property of James Wilder Bream and Joseph Thomas Lockier, partners and linen drapers (petition States he was convicted for the stockings only, value of 2/-). Evidences supplied by James Wilder Bream, Michael Passmore, pawnbroker; Richard Hitchens, servant to Catherine Morgan pawnbroker and Isaac Light, constable. Grounds for clemency: youth (18 years) previous good character, first offence, from a good family, petitioners are of good credit and the magistrates will report in his favour. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy, the magistrates still 'perfectly satisfied' with the sentence. Folios 93-100.Date:1799 Apr 11
