Judge Dowling was found dead at his office over the New Albany National Bank Building this morning a little after 9 o'clock by his stenographer, Miss Anna Gifford. . . Judge Dowling was born in (Hillsboro), Loudon county, Virginia, December 19, 1836, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Dowling. His family removed to New Albany in 1850 where Judge Dowling was educated in the public schools. He read law in the office of Otto & Davis and was admitted to the bar in 1858. He served two terms as prosecutor and for a period of ten years he acted as city attorney, from 1861 to 1865, from 1871 to 1875 and from 1883 to 1885. In 1891 he was offered an appointment on the Supreme bench to succeed Mr. Berkshire, but declined. In 1898 he was elected Judge of the Indiana supreme bench and served from 1899 to 1905. . . He was president and director of the Mutual Trust and Deposit Company; a director in the New Albany National Bank, and was president of the Fairview Cemetery Board of Regents. He was a member of the official board of Trinity Methodist church, and was chairman of the music committee of the church. . . Judge Dowling was a charter member of Trinity church, and acted as a trustee in it since its organization, in 1888. For a few years he served as trustee of DePauw University, at Greencastle, but owing to pressure of business, had to resign. . . Judge Dowling married Miss Cornelia F. Kiger, of Greencastle, Ind., October 18, 1859. Mrs. Dowling died about eighteen years ago. Judge Dowling is survived by two children, one son, Harry Dowling, an attorney of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Coffin, also of Indianapolis. - New Albany Daily Ledger 11 Dec 1917 p1c6.
