Censuses show 'Elizabeth' as wife but no confirmed marriage has been found for range indicated by 1911 census. Elizabeth Rose Barton has been taken from other researchers but no source is shown indicating this may be family knowledge or supposition. There is another possibility, requiring confirmation by marriage certificate or other source, of Elizabeth Carter. She is also from Sutton at Hone and a marriage occured between her an Arthur Dorling (possible mistake) in 1897 in Bromley, Kent.

Anset Ella of 312 Southend-lane Lower Sydenham London S.E.26 widow died 12 July 1952 Probate London 16 September to William John Ead motor fitter. Effects £979 2s 5d.

DOWLING Albert of 40 Howard-road Bromley Kent died 10 December 1938 at County Hospital Farnborough Orpington Kent Probate London 4 May to George William Brown certified accountant. Effects £566 18s 1d.

The Monmouthshire Merlin newspaper page 3 reports on 2 December 1853:
"MONMOUTH . - STEALING MONEY
Elizabeth Gibbert, aged 63, a pauper in the Monmouth union house, was indicted for stealing a shilling and a six pence, the money of Simon Dowling, Monmouth. Mr Barrett was counsel for the prosecution. Mary Dowling, daughter of the prosecutor, who is an eathenware dealer, proved that the prisoner, on the 29th of October last, came into the shop to purchase and article, and followed witness into the kitchen, where the money was on the table. Witness saw her take the 1s. 6d., with which she walked away. Guilty. Three weeks imprisonment."

Best possibility to date: "Simon Peter son of James & Ann Joulin was born November 1 1808, Residence & Parish of Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire and Baptised December 25th 1808." This may be explained if James had a broad accent, maybe Irish, also Simon later calling a child James and, when that child died young, naming a second child James and their being no other suitable candidate in this area at this time. This is all conjecture and I see little way to establish categoric proof at this stage.

CONJECTURE WARNING THIS CONNECTION IS NOT PROVEN: In regards to Simon's marriage, pending further confirmation, one possible marriage for this individual is Oct-Dec 1837 - Simon Peter GOWLIN Birmingham Volume 16 Page 329 this list of potential spouses includes a Mary Bentley. This has been shown as the marriage for testing purposes as
1. The marriage entry clearly spells the name as GOWLIN but this may be enumerator error and neither of the couple appear to be able to write as they sign with a 'X';
2. The whole first name of Simon Peter is used and this combination is surprisingly rare (despite its religious origin);
3. No trace of Simon Gowlin has been found before and after this marriage.
4. Both are shown as residing in Moor Street (near the railway station) prior to marriage.
5. Simon is shown as a Potter and Simon Dowling is involved with earthenware;
6. Mary Bentley, as wife, is consistent with notes on birth indexes on Find My Past entries;
7. No trace of a marriage with the surname Dowling (or typical varient) has been found;
8. The date of this marriage is suitable for the couple before they start their family.
