(Sr) & John (Jr) moved to IN c. 1814. Wm. (Sr) had Wm. (Jr) who m: Hannah M. Fordyce. They had Joseph Lane who m: Louisa A. Reid. They had Otto Ervin(twin) who m: Malinda Ellen South. They had Arville Ervin who m: Leoma Fleetwood. They had Gene Ervin who m: Mickey Lee Fountain. They had me. Stories are told of John (Sr) having 7 brothers in Ireland fighting the British. There is a book "Dowlings of Southern Indiana by Enos Dowling" which I have a copy. I will glady share all that I have on my Dowling's. I hope to trace my family back to Ireland. Any of my cousin out there?

Citation Text: 1:- spent some time at the nat'l archives last week and was able to pull up the passenger manifest of the last trip my gmother made from Ireland to America (Aurania, 12/17/24) -- and discovered the birthplaces for her and for my ggrandmother -- does anyone know anything about "Baltinglass" (I did find it on a map)? My ggrandmother was born in "Mullaghroe" and I haven't found that one on the map -- any info out there? They listed as their friend/relative in Ireland a "Mrs. Gray, Tilmore (i think that is a road or area), Ballytore" my aunt tells me she remembers Mrs. Gray and that she lived in the "big stone house". Will be excited to hear from any of ya'll. thanks, mary lowrey

My grandparents are: Richard (Dick) Michael DOWLING (born in County Wicklow approx 1880) married (in USA about 1912)
Mary Bridget CASEY (born in Baltinglass 1885)
Family Lore -- Dick was a blacksmith, as was his father - Dennis ? DOWLING - before him, and fell in love with Mary CASEY when she returned from America to visit her mother Mary Bridget POWELL CASEY. Mary refused to stay in Ireland and Dick followed her across the sea where they married and produced 5 children. Mary returned to Ireland for her mother and brought her to USA in 1925. Mary Bridget was in poor health and only survived until 1927.
Family "folklore" is that Mary Bridget POWELL was from a well-respected (if not wealthy) British family - possibly an Aunt or cousin to Lord BADEN-POWELL of the Boy Scouts - anyway, she met and fell in love with Patrick CASEY, a "rail-road man," married and raised her family in County Wicklow. Supposedly, her POWELL family disowned her over this marriage.
I wonder why????
Meanwhile, Dennis DOWLING was the village blacksmith and apparently rather prosperous. It seems that he married at least three times; my gfather's mother (Theresa MURPHY) being possibly his last wife. He died in 1936, and I have no clue as to any ancestors on this side of the family prior to these (my ggrandparents).

Here are a couple of pieces of information I have run across which do not help me...maybe someone else.
The Book the will of Mathew Shaup has lots of Dooley hits, such as:
William Boyd was born ca 1710 and Died in January 1794 in Bedford County, VA. His daugther, Mary Boyd (died 1819) married Moses Dooley.
They moved to Kentucky in 1781 and then to Indiana. Their son Rueben (b November 14, 1773) was born in Bedford county, Va. Their son, Silas, was born in Kentucky.
Also from that book, George Dooley, of Bedford Co., VA was the executor of Mathew Shaup's will, which was dated January 29, 1791.
George Dooley left land in Kentucky to his sons, Noah and Aaron but since both were dead, the land went to grandsons Job Sharp and Aaron B. Dooley.

His sons-in-law, William Haley Crawford and Leroy K. Crawford were
brothers, sons of John Crawford and Henaritta (Ritta) Haley. I am a
descendant of William Haley Crawford and Sarah Ann Dooley.
I would like to identify the parents of the Brantleys who married into
this Dooley family. Does anyone have any info on them-who where
their parents, where in NC did they come from, etc. Many Brantleys
came
from Orange and Chatham Co., NC-did they migrate to GA with the
Dooleys? Were the Dooleys in those NC counties? If so, is that were
Bennett Dooley (b. 1795) was born?
All of the other children of William and Elizabeth Dooley married in
Elbert Co., Ga.

I have more to add on William Dooly. The following information I
found in the History of Hart County 1933 by John William Baker:
(Note: the book was published in 1933)
"William Dooly
We have no record of the ancestry of William Dooly and his wife
Elizabeth. He obtained a large body of land of 850 acres in Elbert
(later Hart) County adjoining the lands of Col. Richard Durrett,
Sinclair McMullan, John McCurry, and others, located along the
Savannah River, including an island of about sixty acres at or near
the head of McDonald's Shoals.
He owned a number of slaves and engaged in farming, and was what might
have been called a 'planter', due to the size of his plantation and
extensive farming operations. Besides the place on the river, he
owned considerable other lands in the county, and also in South
Carolina.
He operated pole boats on the Savannah River, transporting cotton and
other produce to Augusta, and perhaps other markets, and merchandise
on the return trips.
He owned a mill on a prog of Powderbag Creek; also the ferry on the
Savannah River, known as Dooly's Ferry, where the old Holly Springs
road crossed, leading out of South Carolina into Georgia, afterwards
known as Craft's Ferry, Captain J.F. Craft later obtaining possession
of the place.
He was what was known as a local Methodist preacher; was prominent in
financial, political, social and religious affairs.
When Hart County was created his place was included in the new county,
and in laying out the militia districts, the district including his
home was called Dooly's District, which name it retained on up until
the year 1861, when the court ground was established at Lodwick
Alford's, when the name was changed to Alford's District.

granddaughters, Sarepta Jane Crawford and Elizabeth Gaines, and to his

two dollars each to his sons-in-law, Barnabas Barron, Moses
Hutchenson, Leroy K. Crawford, and William H. Crawford.
In his will he nominated William W., Mitchell N., and Barnabas J.
Dooly executors.
It appears that two of his sons, Mitchell N. and Barnabas J. Dooly,
came into possession of his home place, where they lived perhaps until
death.
Mitchell N. Dooly lived near the ferry on the river and Barnabas J.
Dooly lived at the crossroads at the place now occupied by L. A.
Chamble."
I found the above information at the Savannah Public Library.
I also found DAR Records - Elbert County Historical Collections:
May Term 1829, page 101; William W. Dooly appointed guardian of
William and Elizabeth Dooly orphans of Allen Dooly, dec'd. Elizabeth
having been born since his death.

"Early Anderson County, South Carolina, Newspapers, Marriages and Obituaries
(1841-1882)." In his will and in the Baker summary, we learn that William Dooley owned land in SC. Does anyone have copies of SC land deeds, or whatever, they can pass along?
His son, Barnabus J. Dooley m. Priscilla Banks, Nov. 4, 1839, Elbert

this Dooley family. Does anyone have any info on them-who where
their parents, where in NC did they come from, etc. Many Brantleys

Dooleys? Were the Dooleys in those NC counties? If so, is that were
Bennett Dooley (b. 1795) was born?

road crossed, leading out of South Carolina into Georgia, afterwards
known as Craft's Ferry, Captain J.F. Craft later obtaining possession

and in laying out the militia districts, the district including his
home was called Dooly's District, which name it retained on up until
the year 1861, when the court ground was established at Lodwick
Alford's, when the name was changed to Alford's District.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about these people.
John Dooley born Feb, 1866 in Wexford, Ireland and Anna (Annie) O'Brien born
Oct 1868. They are my great grandparents. I have copies of the 1900 census
and 1910 census. According to these they came to the USA in 1888 from
Wexford. I know from my dad they went to Albany , NY to stay with relatives
supposedly hers. He does not know who but a great Aunt of mine mentioned a
Bridget Enright. They were in NY for the birth of their first 2 children Mary
and Thomas. My grandfather, James was born in 1894 in Newark, NJ.
According to the 1900 census living in the same apartment house were Patrick
Gleason born Jan 1867, wife, Mary born Dec 1869 and his brother in laws
Michael O'Brien born Feb 1872 and William O'Brien born Dec 1876. The reason I
mention this is that they also came from Ireland in 1888 per the census. If
Michael and William are brother in laws to Patrick Gleason then it is possible
wife Mary is an O'Brien and they are related to my John and Anna (O'Brien)
Dooley.
My dad remembers hearing that either the O'Brien or Dooley family were
railroad builders. Intersting thing is that according to the 1900 census
Michael and William O'Brien are listed under occupation as RR Labourer and John
Dooley is listed as
RR Inspector. My dad also remembers hearing that John Dooley was from a
family of many boys and one of the brothers was named Mark, referred to as
"Mark the Dandy".
My Dooley's came from Wexford County about 1888. If you have family that came from Ireland and would be on the 1900 census you should check that out. The 1900 census will tell you where they came from and you might get lucky as to area. My copy actually had Wexford written on it.
What I know is that John Dooley came with Anna O'Brien. They first went to NY and stayed with family. This might have been a family that included Bridget Enright. I believe they were in Albany unfortunately if they are on a census there it would be the 1890 one and that one I believe is not available. By 1900 they were living in Newark, NJ because that is where my grandfather was born in 1894. The children of John Dooley and Anna O'Brien are Mary, Thomas, James, William, Ann, George and Margaret.
