Subject: RE: Dowling Family History

Brian:

Thanks for the nice response to my message, especially for putting my own adoption in perspective with the practice of the Clans/Septs of old adopting others.

I really don't know much about my family's history, so I tend to focus on the larger picture of Dowlings in general and their place in Ireland and it's history. My father, George Terrance, was born in Chicago in 1922. He came from a large family but his parents were divorced when he was 7 or 8. He died when I was 17. His father was George Edward, but I don't know any more about him as he died a year before I was adopted and my father didn't speak much about him.
After my father died his brother and sisters really had nothing to do with us anymore, primarily because we are Protestants, which always bothered my grandmother Mary Dowling.

We once had a large family reunion in Chicago when I was maybe 11 years old. I remember meeting an adult relative who came to the reunion from Dublin: Paddy Dowling and his wife Bridie...he worked for the newspaper there.

DOWLING TARTAN; In some places I have seen reference to a specific Dowling Tartan, but have never seen an example of it - if there really is one. Do you know anything about that? I know family tartans are rare in Ireland, mostly there are county or district tartans...but a few very prominent families did have their own. I would dearly prize a picture or sample of that tartan - and would have a second kilt made if the material was available. Perhaps we could search for the sett pattern numbers and have it worked up in either art or a woven example. I'm interested in your thoughts about that.

Best Regards, "Strong and Distinguished" Jim Dowling, Michigan, USA.
