Find a Grave Obituary as at 16 April 2025:-
Dr. John Clinton Holman was born January 13, 1829, near Grantville, Meriwether County, Georgia. He was the son of Thornton and Martha Ligon Holman. On January 10, 1851, John C. Holman married Nancy C. Redwine, who was born in 1832. He taught school in Grantville, Georgia, having previously been educated at a college in Newnan, Georgia. In November of 1851, Nancy R. Holman died, after being married just ten months. Following his wife's death, John C. Holman decided to study medicine. He taught school until he saved enough money to enter medical school. He began his studies at the University of Virginia in the year 1854. William B. Holman and William A. Holman were also in the same medical program. All three Holman cousins became physicians.

In the year of 1855, John C. Holman entered the Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania). He graduated from that school in 1856. Dr. John C. Holman settled at Barnes Crossroads, Dale County, Alabama. He then married a former student, Louisa S. Dunson of Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama. She was born in the year of 1837. The couple soon settled about two miles south of the town of Ozark, Alabama. He and his descendants have practiced medicine in that town ever since. In the year of 1867, Dr. John C. Holman built his home on an acre lot just south of the town of Ozark. Louisa D. Holman died October 27, 1867.

Dr. John C. Holman married his third wife, Susan Virginia Dowling, daughter of Edward Dowling, February 13, 1868. That year the new home near Ozark was completed. In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Holman opened a dry goods store along with his partner John H. Huff. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Holman opened his own store. The county seat moved to Ozark, and Dr. Holman's business thrived. Financial setbacks in the 1880s caused him to have to rebuild his crumbling business venture. However, with determination and patience, Dr. Holman survived these bleak situations and built for himself and his family a "magnificent fortune." His last home was built in the early 1880s upon land sold to him by Judge Simmons and Dr. Seigler. His store was located upon the west side of the square in Ozark, Alabama. Dr. Holman also owned a tract of 150 acres of land.

By two wives, Dr. Holman was the father of twelve sons, who have done much to follow in the footsteps of this family patriarch. Today, nine of his descendants are physicians, and others are preparing for this career. Numerous members of the family have followed Dr. Holman's interest in business and have prospered. Dr. John C. Holman was also known to be a pious man and an ardent worker in the local Methodist Church. His manner was quiet and reserved. He was ever ready to help improve his community and called upon the poor, including the slaves, while other doctors refused to go. Dr. Holman regularly attended the sick among the poorer elements of the community, and visited them without hesitation. His gentle voice cheered thousands along the pathway of life.

Dr. John Clinton Holman died in Ozark, Alabama, March 15, 1904. Upon his tombstone one finds the words, "His many virtues form the noblest monument to his memory." On February 28, 1915, Susan V. Holman, the widow of Dr. Holman, died at their home on Daleville Street, Ozark, Alabama. The local paper reported that she was one of the best citizens of that town and was known for having lived "a most exemplary Christian life."
