There is a Nankivell DNA site and we all seem to descend from the same roots, probably in St Columb Major, Cornwall where there was a Nanskivell/Typpett estate with a house demolished in the 1970s but a remaining Nankivell cottage and derelict Nankivel flocking mill.

According to the story a nave Typpett was given the property for his faithful service to his knight after the 1066 Norman invasion and he married the daughter of the house so both names survive to today.

Two year ago, I walked along the public path through delightful woods from St Mawgan in Pydar towards St Columb Major, as I had been refused permission to visit the site of Nanskivell House by the current Carnangton estate owners:

By the time Robert Rogers Nankivell 1811-1894 immediate ancestors were born the family were tin, copper lead, silver, arsenic and zinc miners in St Agnes, Cornwall then moved as new mines opened in the west of Devon. Robert himself was a mine engine driver in Devon, England.

Robert Rogers Nankivell and Elizabeth Tremills 1811-1904 married 1831 in Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England. Elizabeth came from a long line of Tremills, Hamlyn, Nosworthy, Mortimore, French and Crossman families in the lovely village of Widecombe in the Moor, in the centre of Dartmoor which is famous for it's markets, song and church.

They immigrated to New Zealand in 1939/40, their 10 children were:

1. John Nankivell 1831-1902;
2. George Nankivell 1833-1908;
3. Selina Nankivell/Day/Durham 1835-1923;
4. Thomas Nankivell 1837-1840;
5. Robert Nankivell 1838-1839;
6. Avice Nankivell/Davey 1840-1925;
7. Thomas 1841-1911;
8. Marian/Dowling 1843-1885;
9. Robert Henry 1846-1932;
10. Emma Nankivell/Kidd 1850-1935.

In New Zealand Robert Rogers worked as a surveyor for the New Zealand Company then in the South Island for the Canterbury Company on Christchurch while living in Lyttletown he built the men's quarters and several other buildings. I often wonder if he had any idea how unstable the city would be!

There were a few deprivations in the family's life after the death of Robert and Elizabeth’s two sons on the 'Bolton' and the 1840 birth of Avis the day they arrived in Wellington, New Zealand only to find no housing - so they camped on Bolton beach! However, Robert was quickly involved in building houses in Hutt River.

Marion Nankivell 1843-1885 was married to Francis Joseph DOWLING born 1834 Somerset, England in Talbot, Victoria, Australia in 1863. Marion was our great-grandmother, Emma's, sister born to Robert Rogers NANKIVELL and Elizabeth TREMILLS, immigrants from Devon to New Zealand. In Francis Dowling’s will it is interesting that Isabel, a daughter from Robert Roger Nankivell’s second marriage, had stayed with him after Marian's 1885 death. I presume she had come to look after her sister and stayed to keep house for him.

Our great-grandmother was Robert and Elizabeth’s daughter, Emma Nankivell b. 1850-1935, an un-named girl registered in Akaroa, New Zealand and married 1873 Talbot to Thomas Anderson Kidd 1847-1926. They had 8 children including 2 daughters and our grandfather James Cecil Kidd 1877-1849. Our father James Donald Kidd 1916-2009 was his only child.

Emma must have been fond of Francis Dowling, her sister Marian’s husband, as she named her eldest son Claude Dowling Kidd 1875-1913. Emma's stepbrother, Francis William Coles Kilsby, may have been the origin of her naming her youngest son Frank Roy Arnold Kidd 1889-1983 or it may have been Francis Joseph Dowling.

The story goes that when their father Robert Rogers Nankivell left their mother Elizabeth nee Tremills in New Zealand and moved to Melbourne he asked his widowed mother to come to Melbourne to look after his youngest children. Robert arranged for his second son, George Nankivell
1833-1908, to bring the youngest children from New Zealand to Melbourne. Robert’s mother Ann asked her youngest son John Nankivell 1834-1925, in California, USA, to come home and escort her to Melbourne which he did in 1857 on the 'Roxburgh Castle'. By the time they arrived in Melbourne, Robert had married his widowed housekeeper Phoebe Isabel Chadwick/Kilsby and committed bigamy as there was no divorce then in New Zealand. Interesting situation for a Robert who was a Wesleyan lay preacher!

In Australia Robert reinvented himself as a mining engineer with his own quartz mine in Maldon, Victoria where he had bought a small house with a large formal garden and added a large drawing room. It now has an aeroplane construction shed and a bed and breakfast cottage in the backyard:

There is a portrait of Robert in the Australian National Gallery painted before he immigrated, it's in the Rex de Charembac Nan Kivell Collection (This is Robert’s great-grandson - a London Art Gallery owner who was knighted for donating his personal collection:

I have a copy of Rex's self-published book 'Portraits of the Famous and Infamous' and spent 3 days reading his personal papers in Canberra as well as looking at all the works from the collection on display in the Australian National Gallery and saw other items in a travelling display of Australiana.

Robert’s brother, John Nankivell looked after his mother Ann for the rest of her life. Elizabeth Nankivell nee Tremills out-lived both Robert and his second wife Isabel.

Robert's daughters with Elizabeth, dubbed their stepmother Isabel as the 'drawing room lady' and left Robert's care as soon as they were able to live with Avice who married in 1860. Robert’s second son with Elizabeth, George 1833- 1908, was angry with his father and wrote a strongly worded letter to his eldest brother, John Nankivell 1831-1902, in New Zealand expressing this.

Later Robert's first wife, Elizabeth, arrived in Melbourne, Australia and appears to have lived with her brother-in-law John Nankivell and was buried with 2 of her great-grandchildren, Emma's grandchildren, in St Kilda Cemetery. Emma Kidd's daughter, Mary Elsie Kidd 1873-1951, had married her cousin John Edgar Nankivell 1865-1925, son of George Nankivell and Mary Ann Turner 1837-1931, but their rest of their children lived long lives.

Robert Roger Nankivell’s second family with Isobel Chadwick had a further 11 children:

1. Blanche Edith Margaret Nankivell/Lacy 1860-1940;
2. Ernest Chadwick Nankivell 1861-1863;
3. Alfred Frederick Nankivell 1862-1938?;
4. Ernest John Nankivell 1864-1935;
5. Isabel Mary Nankivell 1865-1946;
6. Ida Helen Nankivell/Moloney 1866-1950;
7. Eleanor Chadwick Nankivell 1868-1868;
8. Clement Sinclair Nankivell 1869-1946;
9. Roger Leonard Nankivell 1871-1946;
10. Arthur Hugh Nankivell 1872-1965;
11. Reginald Ashton Nankivell 1874-1961.

Robert’s daughter with second wife Isabel Chadwick, Blanch Nankivell, was educated at the cottage school next door as were all the children but sent to a private girls' school in Melbourne so she became a School Teacher before marrying a station owner out of Geraldton. Several of Emma's siblings ended up in Western Australia and one in South Africa, with several of the sons as mining engineers.

We haven't any photos of Emma but have some of T.A. Kidd and most of his children if they are of interest.
