Written by cousin Tom Dowling (Information on Joe Dowling's family was found in documents between Dermot and my father Jer):-
Dermot was born in Dublin City, Ireland to Joseph Dowling and Josephine O'Sullivan-Dowling.
Joe and Mary had three children Dermot was born in Dublin. He had two brothers Donal, who died aged 15 after completing his Intermediate certificate. A second son Donald died at 17th months after a short illness. Dermot recorded that his father never recovered from the death of Donal “he was never the same man after that”.
Dermot's father purchased a house at 18 Royse Rd, Phibsborough, on the Northside of the city. In 1952 they purchased 48 Greenville Terrace, (off the South Circular Road) where Dermot, would live until his death. I would regularly meet Dermot on the streets around South Circular Road. My dad Jer would regularly visit Dermot, later in his life Dermot would visit our house in Errill.
After Dermot's father's death on 28 June 1963, in Dublin, Age: 73; at St Kevin's Hospital of heart failure and coronary infarction, his mother Josephine said the death of 2 sons and her husband left her very sad and she withdrew from life and kept her only surviving son Dermot very close to her. Josephine herself died in 1972 following a fall in the house she was moved to St James Hospital.
My dad, Jeremiah, had two first cousins in Ireland: Mary O’Shea McGrath and Dermot. Jer and Dermot lived to see their 91st birthdays.
Dermot was a tall well-built man, he had hearing aids, and he mumbled a bit, so you had to listen carefully to hear what he said, and he was not very mobile. He was a well-read man his house was covered in books, but he was a bit of a recluse. Following Dermot’s father Joe's death his mother Josephine kept Dermot very close to her to the point that Dermot never had a job until after her death. He started working for Ampere Electrical in Smithfield Dublin as a bookkeeper a job he would hold until his retirement in 1996.
Dermot was a deeply religious man and the priest would call to the house. Het would visit our house up to the time of my mother's death and he also visited the O'Shea in Templemore. He could eat for Ireland! When he came to our house, I most enjoyed his stories of visiting East Germany, Russia, and Poland well before the Berlin Wall came down He made a friend of Frank Burke, a teacher, when they lived in Phibsborough and would become a guardian at the time of his death. I often met Dermot at the corner shop on the South Circular Road. As both my dad and Dermot got older, and I moved to Limerick in 2015 the only contact I had was
through a call from Frank Burke. Just before the Covid-19 Pandemic, Dermot had a fall in the house and needed hospital care. After 13 weeks in hospital, he was moved to a nursing home in Clontarf.
Dermot would die of natural causes some months later and was buried in Glasnevin with the rest of his family.

Three of the men are buried at Ileigh church near Borrisoleigh. An extract from a letter in 1933 from Timothy Shanahan. Secretary of Borrisoleigh Fianna Fáil Club to a Local TD in support of a pension for the families of the executed Michael Collins was the commander of the Free State Provisional Government's National Army. However, following the death of Michael Collins in an ambush on 22 August 1922, the Free State Provisional Government, under the leadership of President William. T. Cosgrave, Richard Mulcahy (the new head of the Free State army) and Kevin O'Higgins the Minister for Justice, took the position that the Anti-Treaty IRA were conducting an unlawful rebellion against the legitimate Irish government and should be treated as criminals rather than as combatants. Kevin O'Higgins believed that the use of martial law was the only way to bring the war to an end.
Kevin O’Higgins was born in Stradbally Co Laois (Barrister by profession) and served as Vice-President of the Executive Council and Minister for Justice from 1922 to 1927. In his capacity as Minister for Justice, O'Higgins established the Garda Síochána police force. Following the death of Collins in August 2022 and mid-1923, O'Higgins introduced tough measures with the execution of seventy-seven republican prisoners of war, including Rory O'Connor who had been best man at his wedding. On Sunday 10 July 1927, Kevin O'Higgins aged 35 was assassinated by three anti-Treaty members of the IRA, in revenge for O'Higgins' part in the executions of IRA prisoners during the civil war. He was deemed to be the last person to die in bitter the Civil War. Following O’Higgins’s assignation, Éamon de Valera and his fellow Fianna Fáil party TDs who had refused to take their seats in the parliament following the signing of the Treaty in 1921 resumed their positions in the Dail after 6 brutal years. January 1923 saw the execution of thirty-four IRA prisoners by the National Army and the Government of The Irish Free State. This would be the greatest number of
executions carried out in a single month during the Civil War.
An extract from a letter in 1933 from Timothy Shanahan. Sectary of Borrisoleigh Fianna Fáil Club to a Local TD in support of a pension for the families of the executed in 1923 read. “Under orders from their *Commanding Officer to hold up the Mail Car at least twice per week & it was during the progress of one of these searches at a place called Ross Cottage, Borrisoleigh, that they were surrounded by *‘Crown Forces’ They put up a most desperate fight for about three hours, and it was only when their supply of ammunition became exhausted that they were reluctantly compelled to surrender. Then after a time in prison, the government decided to put them against the wall and there and then ended the lives of three gallant young men”.
Note: There were no British forces in Ireland in 1923 this reference is to the Irish Free State Army of the pro-Treaty government of Michael Collins. The MSRB certified Martin O’Shea from Garrangrena, Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, as having served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from sometime in 1917 onwards, and with an ASU in 2 Tipperary Brigade at the time of his capture. As well as helping on his family’s smallholding he is also stated to have worked as a casual labourer for the local council. A Military archive dated June 14th, 1933, a file relates to the receipt by his mother, Bridget O’Shea, of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £112.10.00 in 1934 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son.
