Mary Blake was born in Dublin City in 1863. In 1882 she was a servant in Dublin, living in 63 Arran Street East. Unmarried and heavily pregnant she desperately entered the Dublin North Union Workhouse "widowed and helpless" on 23 Octber 1882 and gave birth there, on the 3 November, to Francis Blake. Mother and son were able to leave the Workhouse on 27 November. Mary and Francis are next found in Rotunda, Dublin City in the 1901 census living in 10 Russell Place. Mary appears to not be working but does have boarders living in the same address.
By 1911 Mary and Francis had moved to 205 Botanic Avenue in the Glasnevin area.
On 8 January 1920 Mary dies of stomach cancer in St Vincent's Hospital. On her death registration she is described as the "widow of a mechanic".
On 12 December 1923 Mary's son, Francis, living at 5 Richmond Road, marries Julia Dowling at the Pro Cathedral in Marlboro Street in Dublin. On the marriage registration Francis states his father is "Francis Blake - clerk".
No record of a marriage for Mary has been found and the name of her son's father was not entered on the birth or baptism registrations. Importantly, on Mary's entry registration into the Workhouse, she is described as "Single". Considering the prevailing negative attitude to children born outside marriage it would not be unusual that Mary shielded Francis from this with a ruse of widowhood.

Over the years, I have done some research on my family. Dolan is my maiden name. But various records indicate the name has been shown as Dooling, Doland, and Dowling. When I found that my great grandfather came from County Kerry, I had some professional geneology work done from a local there. It was she that indicated my family name probably started as Dowling, then changed over time and emigration to Dolan. We appear to have roots on the west coast of Kerry, Ballybunion to be exact. Over the years, I have done some research on my family. Dolan is my maiden name. But various records indicate the name has been shown as Dooling, Doland, and Dowling. When I found that my great grandfather came from County Kerry, I had some professional geneology work done from a local there. It was she that indicated my family name probably started as Dowling, then changed over time and emigration to Dolan. We appear to have roots on the west coast of Kerry, Ballybunion to be exact. Over the years, I have done some research on my family. Dolan is my maiden name. But various records indicate the name has been shown as Dooling, Doland, and Dowling. When I found that my great grandfather came from County Kerry, I had some professional geneology work done from a local there. It was she that indicated my family name probably started as Dowling, then changed over time and emigration to Dolan. We appear to have roots on the west coast of Kerry, Ballybunion to be exact.
