Catherine Staples was born on 4 June 1878 in Ballaghablake, St Margaret's parish, County Wexford in Ireland. Mostly called Kate or Katie she grew up on her father's farm. Her parents, John Staples and Anne Reede had a large family and, in 1901, were living apart with children in both houses. Katie was with her father and between 1901 and 1911 she moved up to Naas, Kildare to live with her uncle William who was a wine merchant and grocer with a large store on the South Main Street.

Uncle Williams store was so busy he employed many staff and, among them, was Edward Dowling from Wicklow. Kate and Edward got on well and on 7 October 1912 were married in Naas.

Uncle William died in 1914 and was buried in Saint Corban's Cemetery in Naas. It appears William, having no children of his own, left the store to Edward and Katie. He may have left a significant some of money as "Kathleen Dowling, of South Main Street, Naas" became a shareholder of The Leinster Leader Limited on May 21, 1915. The following year Ireland saw many disturbances across the country in 1916 Rising.

The civil unrest in Ireland resurfaced only a few years later with the War of Independence leading to Ireland becoming the Irish Free State in 1921.

In 1931 E S Dowling of South Main Street, Naas registered as a grocer, wine and spirit merchant in the Irish Trade Directory. Also registered was "E Staples Dowling" as a 'whiskey bonder' which involves sourcing and blending new spirits and maturing Irish whiskey. This may well have been lucrative and that the 'Staples' name is co-registered indicates a potential partnership between Edward and Kate.

Edward and Kate appear to have had no children.

Katie's husband Edward died on 2nd June 1936 and was buried in Saint Corban's Cemetery with uncle William.

At some time Kate moved from South Main Street, Naas, to Marianella, Dublin road, Naas.

Kate Dowling nee Staples passed away on April 28, 1965 in Naas and was buried with her husband and uncle in Saint Corban's Cemetery.

Kathleen's Probate was exhibited on December 29, 1966. It dealt with her shares valued by the Leinster Leader company at £1,190 Stirling at one stage. A later record ( from early 1968) indicates that her 710 shares were transferred, by agreement of the directors, to others associated with the paper, two members of the Williams family, Maureen Britton (then wife of Managing Director, Bill Britton), the Kerrymount Company and Desmond Joseph Collins

When Kathleen's shares were sold in 1968 after her death, possibly around 55 shillings per share, they were sold in blocks of 142 to each of these parties. They may have been priced at around 55s. Her executor was Michael Gogarty. (any relationship with the Gogarty's is as yet not established (Henry Bauress of the Leinster Leader asks, "Was she born Kathleen Gogarty, daughter of William and Margaret Gogarty, Celbridge, and 17 years old at the 1901 Census." the answer, at present, appears to be no).

Find-a-Grave Obituary:
William Henry Dowling, a native of Nova Scotia, left his home at twenty-one years of age, and came to California; he worked in the lumber woods at Lyonsville for eight summers, then went East to visit his parents; he remained with them almost a year, and married Miss Louisa J. Penny, also a native of Nova Scotia.

They came to California and have made Lyonsville their home ever since his death, which was the 19th of July, 1892. He and Warner Gosney had gone to the landing just after dinner, and had started to roll a log by means of a long cable and a "dummy." A small cable which was lying under the log with a snaking dog attached to it, accidentaly caught into the log. The large cable was unhooked from the log and was put through a block for the purpose of rolling. When he gave engineer Luke Gosney the signal to tighten up on the large cable, the small cable was still caught into the log and he standing astraddle of it. The movement of the log tightened the small cable, catching his legs and throwing him headlong over the log, face downward, the log rolling onto him, crushing his body, and killing him almot instantly. As he fell he saw no hope but death, and to those near his lasat words were, "I'm gone!" The log was raised off of him in a moment but he only straightened his legs, gasped a time or two and all was over. The remains were brought down the flume on a raft by James Morton and Abe Gift to the mouth of the canyon and from there in a wagon to the residence of John Lutz near Red Bluff.

The deceased leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss - Ethel Louisa, the oldest child, being six years old, and William Bruce, three years eight months. Also his father and mother. He was the brother of Mrs. John Lutz, Mrs. W. H. Robertson, Mrs. I. N. Gates, Miss Mae Dowling and Miss Minnie Dowling of Red Bluff, and Burton and David Dowling of Lyonsville and John Dowling on Montana.

At the time of his death he was aged thirty-six years, eight months and four days. By his death Lyonsville has lost a good citizen and the Sierra Lumber Company a faithful officer. The position he held at the time of his death is evidence of the esteem in which he was held by the company. The funeral took place under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity of the 21st of July, at 10 o'clock, from the residence of John Lutz, Rev. E. H. Jenks officiating. He was buried at Oak Hill cemetery. A large number of sympathizing friends of the family followed the deceased to the last resting place."
