Citation Detail: From: email address (mailto:email address); Sent: 28 February 2000 04:48; To: email address; Subject: DOOLAN/PHELAN. Just ran across your website. Nice!! Interesting to know that DOWLING may have been a derivative. Now I know why Maria's (below) sister CATHERINE was listed as DOWLING on the 1881 Wales Census, and as the sis-in-law of my grandmother. I always thought it was a misprint. Catherine married TIM HENNESEY in 1882 in Victoria, Wales. Both emigrated to America as far as I know. My grandmother was MARIA ELIZABETH DOOLAN, b. 1858, Waterford, Ireland. Don't know if it was city or county of. Mother's name was MARY PHELAN, father's name was JAMES or DENIS DOOLAN. Family story has Maria being raised by an Uncle WILLIAM PHELAN in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny because one or both of her parents died at a young age. Can't verify tho. Got this info from wedding certificate and 1881 Monmouthshire, Wales Census. MARIA married MICHAEL PATRICK O'LEARY, 1880, Victoria, Wales (Ebbw Vale) They had one dtr. ELIZABETH born in Victoria, Wales in 1881 before they emigrated to America in 1881(Mike) & 1882 (Maria & Elizabeth) From: email address (mailto:email address); Sent: 05 March 2000 03:12; To: email address; Subject: Re: DOOLAN/PHELAN reply. Hi Brian, Thanks for the info, but I already have it. There is a disparity on the age of my grandmother Maria Doolan as she was born on Nov. 1, 1858 according to the family bible, and it's in her handwriting. Catherine's age and being born in Wales is what puzzles me. I don't know when Maria emigrated to Wales, but it would have to be before 1861 if Catherine was born in 1861, and the history I have is that Maria's father James Doolan was already deceased and she was raised by an uncle in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny. The name Denis Doolan was listed as the father of the bride on my grandparent's wedding certificate in 1880 so I'm wondering if a brother took over the marital duties at some point and begat Catherine. Gets confusing at times doesn't it? I still have to send an inquiry to the Waterford Heritage Center for info on that side of my clan. There is no more 4 Shop Row, or any of the other five addresses that my ancestors lived at. We were in that area in 1998 and a friend from Wales, Brendan O'Leary escorted us to all of them. The old Bedwellty Iron Works Museum was especially interesting to us, seeing the old photos of how they lived at that time. It makes one appreciate his ancestors more and what they had to go through to make a better life for the following generations. God bless'em!! My Sullivan gggrandparents and a great aunt are buried in the Ebbw Vale Cemetery in the non-conformist section. Unfortunately when we were there they had already initiated pulling up all of the 100 year old or more grave markers in that section of the cemetery and stacking them off to the side, to be taken over with vines and weeds. Very sad indeed for researchers. Thanks for writing Brian, and stay in touch. Don Possible connection with our DOOLAN/PHELAN Clans?? Thanks. Don,

The Revolution in North Beach - by John Dowling

The revolution in North Beach
sits at a table
in Cafe Trieste.

It talks to a homeless man
sitting on the steps
in front of a church.

It discusses
conspiracy theories of the rich
over glasses of wine.
It murmurs with others
at around table
at Specs.
They break into abrupt laughter.

The revolution in North Beach
makes honorary plagues to Fidel
and hangs them on the livingroom wall.
The revolution comes out of the mouth
of the gun
that sits locked away at home
away from the children.

Someone buys the revolution a drink
and they plan to go out to dinner later.
It shares a joint
in a doorway
in Vallejo street
The revolution writes in a little notebook
"America is the middle class of the world."
