Born Oakey Creek Station, Oakey Creek, Qld. Daughter of John & Mary Theresa (nee Quinlan) Scanlan. Wife of Patrick Joseph Conmee and Thomas Henry Kinchington.

The Cessnock Eagle and South Maitland Recorder (NSW) - Friday, 17 January 1936
"HONORED BY HIGH ORDER
Mrs. Ellen Kinchington
The many friends of Mrs. Ellen Kinchington in the South Maitland district will be pleased to learn that she has been honoured by the King by having the distinguished order of M.B.E. conferred upon her.
This is the second distinction within the last twelve months as she was the recipient of the King's Jubilee Medal. Mrs. Kinchington whose daughter, Nurse Kinchington has lived in Kurri Kurri for many years resided with her during her lengthy stay in the coalfields district.
She has been a splendid charity worker in the Metropolitan area for the last 25 years, especially featuring in prisoners' aid work. Mrs. Kinchington has been decorated on account of her magnificent social service rendered to the State.
She had five sons all of whom saw active service in the late war, two of whom paid the supreme sacrifice. The honour conveyed upon her is all the more distinctive on account of being a Commonwealth honour of which there were only two other recipients."

Nora Francis Ellen Scanlan, my great grandmother. Known as Nellie. By Gerard Whelan 11 June 2021

Nellie was born in Queensland in 1866, where and which month depends on the documents for later life. Apparently she was not registered at birth.

Nellie’s parents, John & Mary Scanlan emigrated to Rockhampton from Ireland under the
patronage of Bishop Quinn, arrived on the Beejapore with 4 children. (Several had died in Ireland or on the ship). Timothy was born in Rockhampton and Nellie was born somewhere south as the family roamed looking for work or a gold field.

At age 13 Nellie was the only child still at home and she lived with John & Mary at Blackall in a hessian and wood hut. On Christmas Day 1878, John and Nellie went to visit a friend and while away the hut burnt down and Mary died.

John and Nellie drifted around Queensland and at one stage lived in Mount Morgan, Nellie was recorded as “Belle of the Ball”. Nellie spent some time at St Anne’s Industrial College in Brisbane where she learnt dressmaking which she put to good affect later in life.

Nellie married Patrick Conmee in Roma in 1886 and they had 4 sons, before Patrick moved off to Barcaldine then to Longreach to set up business but it was really a separation.

Nellie went back to Mount Morgan in 1894 (Nellie was the housekeeper at the Mine Manager’s house in Mount Morgan prior to 1896, probably 1894 where she would have met Vincent Dowling) and is recorded as living with a Louis Halberstater around the time my grandmother was born in 1895. I assumed he was my great grandfather but my DNA proved this incorrect. Nellie and Louis then separated and Nellie, with 5 children and no partner became desperate, she sued Patrick Conmee for child maintenance, and obviously couldn’t convince Vincent Dowling to leave his wife. In 1897 Nellie gave birth to Kathleen in Brisbane but sadly the baby dies only 3 months old.

Nellie lived in Mount Morgan, Rockhampton and Bouldercombe (she was licensee of the Hector Hotel). In1898, pregnant again, she packed up and took her 5 children to Bundaberg where her twins were born. It appears Nellie and Vincent Dowling had a relationship from 1894 until 1898 and he fathered 4 children with Nellie. (My grandmother Louisa, Kathleen (died at 3mths, no DNA so assumed), and twins Vivian Vincent and Gladys (DNA from Vivian’s son).

After the twins were born Nellie collected the other children from the orphanage in Brisbane and moved to Toowoomba.

In 1904 Nellie, with 7 children boarded a train to try her luck in Sydney. She arrived broke, her “life’s savings” were stolen on the train and no prospects of work, even asked the police who met her, for help to get work for her sons.

Nellie borrowed money from a money lender at 15% per quarter and then found she couldn’t repay the loan. She and her eldest son took a contract at a sheep station in Goodooga (800km north west of Sydney) for 12mths to save some money. She left Tom(14yrs old) to look after Robert (12yrs old in school). Tom had a job as a bell boy at a hotel in the city but was “let go” ( too young to work where alcohol was served). Tom decided to steal some jewellery from a guest but she
awoke and he panicked and stabbed her to death.

Tom was convicted of murder and sentenced to death at Darlinghurst but the Governor commuted the sentence to life imprisonment. He said he wanted to steal the jewellery to pay for his room, his brother and to help pay off his mother’s debt and visit the orphanage where his brother and sisters were.

While in Goodooga Nellie met and married Thomas Kinchington, a station hand.

Nellie and family now moved to Goulburn (where Marie was born) to be close to Tom in the Goulburn jail (the authorities kept him separate from the hardened criminals and gave him an education). This was the turning point in Nellie’s attitude to life. The family returned to Sydney (Tom was brought to Parramatta jail for treatment) and Nellie decided it was time she took control and not be the victim.

Nellie threw herself into social work, everything she could to help the people she felt who were not getting a fair go.
She became well known in the Courts, by the prosecuting police and Magistrates, where she would rescue girls from jail and help rehabilitate them in a home.

Nellie became involved in fund raising for organisations and Charities. Joined in the social set.

Nellie was a prolific letter writer and speaker. She would write to the press, her members of Parliament and even wrote to the Prime Minister to plead a case for more assistance for returned servicemen and the digger’s wives. Her 5 sons all served in WW1, Tom was released from prison after serving 10yrs and within a month had enlisted in the Army to serve with his brothers. Pat and Jim were awarded Military Medals, Tom was killed in action at Zonnebeck and Robert died in Ireland while on leave.

Nellie spoke at rallies to encourage men to enlist in the forces during the First World War, but later spoke against conscription. She often spoke at political rallies. She even started a branch of the Country Political Party in Sydney and they organised purchase of a car for a country nurse.

Nellie was recognised for her tireless work with a King’s Medal in 1935 and an MBE in 1936.

Nellie Kinchington passed away in Sydney in 1957 and is interred in the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Gardens with her favourite son Pat and his wife.

Unfortunately her life and achievements were never discussed in our family and this only came to light when I started my research. I did meet Nellie but I was very young and obviously didn’t talk family. I spent good times with my grandmother but she would never discuss her family and my mother said she knew nothing even though she became very interested in the Family Tree but stuck to her father’s side.

I had assumed Louis Halberstater was my grand mother’s father as Nellie was living with him when Louisa Dympna was born in 1895. Despite the birth certificate registering Pat Conmee as the father, he wasn’t, as he and Nellie had been separated for at least 18months.

When I got my DNA I went looking for matches with Halberstater family but found none, not even German matches but I did find a close match to the Wiley family. I contacted Philip Wiley and found both of us had a grand parent from Rockhampton in the 1890s. I then went looking for a common factor and it turned out to be Vincent Mackay Dowling. This
connection was confirmed in my mind by my DNA matches with other descendants of VMDowling and Mackays from Dungog. (Other matches includes Parry, Fossey, Hooke).
---===oOo===---
Trevor Kinchington, 13 June 2021, says, "Considering the various court cases that bounced around, however, I think it very unlikely that either Nora's husband (Patrick Conmee) or Halberstaedter fathered any of her later children. (There is a hint that Conmee only fathered the eldest of her nine.) I have been unable to find any evidence of who their father was, beyond speculating that he may have been the same man who set Nora up as victualler of the Hector Hotel, on the Rockhampton road. Thus, I can see that Vincent Mackay Dowling _might_ have been the father but, your website aside, I do not know of any evidence that he was involved.

I see that you have stated "paternity disputed", for each of the four children. But could you tell me what evidence there was in the first place for it to be disputed? (Answer: "Disputed" by virtue of Gerard Whelan stating that Conmee and Norah were separated from 1893).

Nora was very adept at inventing convenient tales to obscure her past and she clearly drilled her children until they repeated them without question. (It has taken a lot of digging by a number of her later descendants to get somewhere near the truth.) So comfortable was she with untruths that, while one of her sons was on trial for murder and facing the hangman's noose, she perjured herself blatantly on the witness stand. (Somehow, she rose above all of that and was awarded an MBE in 1936!) However, with a record like that, I would not be at all surprised to find that she invented a tale of her children being fathered by a Director of the Mount Morgan mine, to hide some less-palatable truth.

Then again, she also proved herself adept at manipulating men and I would not be surprised to find that she did seduce Vincent Dowling. (Late in life, she did not seem to lack for money, despite having no paying job, and affair with a wealthy, married man would be one explanation for that.

Trevor Kinchington says, on 13 Jun 2021, "Louisa Dympna Kathleen was born on 30 March
1895 and, at her baptism, one of the sponsors was Maurice Halberstaedter, brother to Louis Halberstaedter, with whom Nora had been living in Mount Morgan since some time in 1894. Thus, I think it almost certain that Louisa Dympna was fathered by Halberstaedter, not any Dowling. ."
