Poor Katie Dowling had autism as well as some mental health issues but was treated as a patient in an acute psychiatric ward environment for almost 6 months before self-ligaturing with fatal consequences. The treatment, despite seven consultant psychiatrists over six months, was a regime that did not address her autistic needs. It appears that in the absence of knowledge or facilities for autism that Katie was placed in inappropriate mental health care for convenience to the services as her autism diagnosis was clear.

The attachmanet to the source is a report by the Coroner Alan Moore bringing the matter to government department attention to reduce the chances that the mistakes of Katie's treatment will be repeated.
