Written by son Tom Dowling:- JERRY DOWLING - A METICULOUS MAN

Jeremiah Dowling (Jer or Jerry) was born on 27 October 1930 in Dromard, Tipperary, Ireland to Thomas Dowling and Mary Anne Moylan-Dowling. Describing him as meticulous was not overstating this man. He even choose a special date to depart this world. After a short illness, Jer passed away on the first of the first of the twenty-first.

Like many of his other siblings, Jeremiah's birth was never registered at the time of his birth.

Jerry was the eldest of five children, at 11 years old, when his father died in Dromard, after that Jer lived all his life in Knockardgannon, Errill on the Tipperary and Laois border.

My father often told us the story of Christmas Eve 1941, when his mother was informed that his father was dying and at the age of 11 Jer had to get their pony and trap ready to collect him 15 kilometres away in Roscrea to bring his body home.

His father's early passing robbed Jer and hsi sister Peg of their childhood. Their siblings were probably too young to understand what was going on at the time.

Jer would be the only one of his siblings to remain in Ireland.

Jerry's mother, Mary Ann Dowling, purchased Knockardgannon South (gate lodge) from Mrs Mansfield. in September 1943, it was a two-roomed lodge built around 1875 and originally belonged to Lisduff House where a gamekeeper and his family lived. Before Mary Ann and the family had moved from Dromard to their next home, someone had tried to burn down the house. In the attic of the large living room, the charred rafters are still visible. Perhaps someone felt they should have got the property instead of us.

Not yet twelve Jeremiah was now the man of the house. They bring a pony with them from Dromard and Jer gets a job with the county council bringing out turf from the bog, providing them with a small income for the family. It was a one-bedroom house and in the kitchen, there was a settle bed in the living room that would be opened in the evening in which the boys slept.

Even though Jeremiah left school at 12 his writing was impeccable and there were no issues with maths either. He became the breadwinner in the family with all the responsibilities it brought with it.

He began work at Lisduff Lime Works driving a tractor in 1950. Jer worked briefly in the quarry preparing the explosives for blasting in the quarry during 1956. The previous person was killed in a blast while preparing the explosives in the workshop! On leaving the position in June 1965, his reference read:

“This is to certify that Jeremiah Dowling was in my employment from 1950 until I sold it in 1965. His work was in the field of ground limestone. He was an excellent excavator operator, and lorry driver and most reliable and capable of carrying out any work that was assigned to him in the course of his employment with me. He also served as my ganger (foreman) He is a man of excellent character, dependable and trustworthy. I can confidently recommend this man and I wish him every success in the future”. Edward Byrne.

Jer had many health scares, in 1951 he had an operation for a burst appendix at Portlaoise Hospital that could have killed him. He was left with a very visible scare.

Jeremiah joined the Local Defence Force in 1951 and he would travel to Portobello Barracks in Dublin for 2 weeks every summer for paid training. During the height of the troubles in the North Jer was rotated for weekend security duty at power stations that were under threat of attack.

To describe this man is almost impossible. Jerry was secretary of Errill Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club for many years but not alone that, he also carried out works both on the pitch and off the pitch. While he seldom played himself, he just loved the club and how proud he was when Jimmy Murray represented the small rural club in Croke Park in 1949. Of course, he was in the thick of things when Errill were crowned county champions in 1952 when Jimmy Murray became only the third captain to be presented with the O’Keefe Cup, and the panel included two priests.

In 1960 Jer Dowling purchased bogland (5 acres) at Ballagh Bog from Captain Fitzpatrick Ossary Estate for £13 and 15 shillings.

Jer immersed himself in every organisation in the village of Errill including Muintir Na Tire. Jerry had a great love of drama and was central to everything that went on in the local drama group. Many Young Men of Twenty, Sive and The Field, all John B Keane classics are just a sample of plays produced by the drama group and when they took the stage in St Bernadette’s Hall not a seat was left vacant. Jer also was an extra in the battle scenes of the 1962 film The Blue Max with George Peppard.

Jeremiah and Teresa Tierney became engaged to be married in Dublin. Teresa was working in the General Post Office (GPO). Jeremiah proposed to Teresa on a park bench close to the gates of Dublin Zoo in Pheonix Park.

On 4th September 1963 he married Teresa Tierney at Rathdowney Church. Their reception was in Thurles (possibly Grants Hotel) and their honeymoon was in Butlins Gormanstown County Meath. Joe Dowling, his brother, was his best man and Alice Lawlor from Crumlin in Dublin, Teresa's cousin, was her matron of honour.

Following marriage, Teresa had to give up her job in the civil service and they lived and raised their family at Knockardgannon South, Errill in the house Mary Ann Dowling purchased in 1943.

They had three children. Tom (myself) born on the 16th of September 1964, Joseph Denis was born on the 20th of May 1967 and Diarmuid was born on the 15th of April 1971.

Jer joined Tipperary Glass as a truck driver in 1967. Letter from Tipperary Glass Ltd.:
“Dear Sir, I have been in consultation with *Senator Nash regarding your employment as a lorry driver. We have the pleasure of informing you that your application has been a successful one and I hope your relationship with the company will be a happy one and to our mutual benefit. Kindly be prepared to start on Monday at 8 am”. Yours sincerely Tipperary Glass Ltd. He continued to work for the company until his early 70s as a personal driver for owners Mr & Mrs Nash.

He broke his leg on 2 occasions while riding a motorbike while working in Tipperary Glass when a large sheet of glass broke away and sliced the calf of his leg that could have easily cut an artery!

It would be 1972 before Jeremiah registered his own birth as he was legally trying to get the house at Knockardgannon South into his name. There were many other complications as the legal title of the house and land was still in the name of Lord Castletown.

Jer began work on the new house extension in 1976 adding a third bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, later a 4th bedroom was added. He lived in the house up to the time of his death.

Social dancing had been sweeping the country until the Pandemic brought it to a halt hitting many elderly people, especially in rural Ireland. For years Jerry organised dancing in St Bernadotte’s Hall and always kept in touch with like-minded people in
the surrounding counties. Music was another of Jerry’s great loves and he had huge admiration for musicians and always looked forward to the bands who supplied music for dancing and singing.

In the olden days, the LDF or Local Defence Force also referred to as FCA (Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil - reserve army) was an important organisation for local defence and Jerry was involved for many years since 1951. In 1987 he was promoted to sergeant major the highest ranking for a non-commissioned officer. This was a huge honour and I remember being very proud of him.

There were other matters Jerry attended to in Errill always kept it safe and of course, kept tidy. The village has figured highly in the annual Tidy Towns marking.

In 1992 following pneumonia, it was discovered that Teresa had bowel cancer. Teresa had surgery in St Luke’s Hospital in Dublin followed by radiotherapy treatment - her recovery was slow. Eventually, she was given the all-clear.

On the 8th of September 2005 following an MRI scan it was discovered that Teresa’s bowel cancer had returned. It was a strange time, Jer had been in Portlaoise hospital for several weeks with a blockage to a bile duct and, in my opinion, he could have died at that time as he was very sick but, he recovered and was released the day my mother went into the hospital.

Later on 10 February 2006 he lost his wife, Teresa and more recently lost his granddaughter Jade.

In October 2020, Jerry turned 90 and his health began to decline somewhat, although it did not alter his determination to keep Errill great. Even through difficult times he continued to keep an eye on his neighbours and was only waiting to be asked to assist. Like most people of his generation, he missed Sunday Mass, but he rarely missed the stream from the Parish Church.

Jerry was a lot of things to a lot of people. One word for him would be resilient. He had an inner steel that must have come from the difficult start he had in life but lived out his life to the very end; in his 90's he was setting peat blocks in the field and, less than a few months before he died, in his 91st year he was still driving. On October 26 October 2021 the famnily celebrated Jeremiah's 90th birthday and over Christmas that year 'Jer' had a fall at home and it was decided to send him to hospital for a check-up. Because of teh Covid-19 Pandemic the family were unable to visit him in hospital

In the late afternoon on 1st January 2020, Jer was walking the corridor of Portlaoise Hospital and told a nurse he was feeling tired and would lie down and she helped him to bed. Only a short time later he passed away peacefully in his sleep. Because of the current 'strange times' with restrictions on contact to prevent the spread of the fatal Covid-19 virus no one was allowed at his bedside.

Again, dues to the Covid Pandemic restrictions which had claimed millions of lives worldwide, his funeral could only have 16 people in attendance... very strange times indeed for the many who had wanted to attend. On Monday 4 January, Jerry’s Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Martin Delaney PP who spoke of a great parishioner who had made all his plans for this day. Despite restrictions,, his former comrades in the FCA formed a discreet guard of honour which Jerry would have been proud of. His coffin was draped with the Tricolour to mark his service to his country with the FCA and the Errill GAA colours to mark his great service to the club all through the years. On 22 January 2022, the newspaper 'Laois Today' descibed him as a "local phenomenon!"

I said earlier he was meticulous and that was how he lived and how he died. Pre-deceased by Teresa his wife and his granddaughter Jade, Jerry is mourned by his sons Tom, Dinny and Diarmuid, daughters-in-law, grandchildren Paul, Jennifer, Aoife,
Jaque, Luke, Katie, Hayley, Tommy and Taylor, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours,
and a huge circle of friends.

Written by nephew Tom Dowling:

Margaret (Peg) Dowling was born on 30 Aprilin Dromard, Tipperary, the only daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Moylan-Dowling.

Margaret was the second eldest in the family and, as a teenager, she worked in the Pathe Hotel in Roscrea. Later, in 1958, Peg emigrated to the Nottingham in the United Kingdom.

In March 1959 Margaret married Tom Taylor, he was from Moyne, Thurles, Tipperary, and they had five children: Martin, Seamus, Margaret, Noeleen and Kathy. I have many fond memories of The Taylors and their regular visitors to our house in Knockardgannon during the 1970s.

Peg and her brother, Jer, were very close and it was clear there was a deep bond between them. There were constant letters between them that I remember Jer also sent copies of the Tipperary Star and the Leinster Express.

Her husband Tom Taylor worked in construction and died as a young man with multiple sclerosis. Following Tom’s illness Peg did not visit Ireland as often as before although I visited Peg and hger family on a few occasions with my dad in the 1980s.

Peg, a sweet, kind woman who gave everything for her family, died aged 79 on 11th August 2011 in Nottingham from lung cancer.

Joe Dowling was born on 5 May 1933 in Dromard, Tipperary, son of Thomas and Mary Ann Moylan-Dowling.

In May 1951 Joe began work for the Council in Ballagh Bog. (source: brother Jer’s diary). He later emigrated to Nottingham in the United Kingdom.

Later Joe Married Mary Maloney from Six Mile Bridge in County Clare and they had 4 children: Thomas, Mary, Declan, and Kevin.

Joe was diagnosed with lung cancer and died on the 7th of November 1996, in Nottingham. It was the first time I witnessed someone close to me that was not old dying. In his final months, he was carrying around an oxygen bottle with him.

My memories of Joe were as a handsome man with a strong physique, always smartly dressed, his shoes polished, and his hair was well groomed. He always took time to engage with me in conversation and I felt he was speaking to me on the same level.

His daughter Mary would stay with us in the late 1970s for a few weeks each time. She became like an older sister to me for a while. Later Mary would return to Ireland and marry Jack Chapman in county Clare they had 3 children. She died of breast cancer as a young mother.

Kevin still lives in Nottingham, and I see him most years when I visit my cousin Helen’s bar (the Headstocks). Declan’s living in Cornwall and I have not seen him in a few years.

Written by nephew Tom Dowling:-

Sean Dowling was born 1 August 1934 in Dromard, Tipperary, son of Thomas and Mary Ann Moylan-Dowling.

Sean was small in stature but was full of life with inner steel, his nickname around Errill was Donnelly, but I don’t know why!

Sean emigrated to the Nottingham in the United Kingdom and later settled in Birmingham. My uncle Frank Tierney was in 'digs' with Maurice and Sean in Nottingham for a short time it said it was a wild time! Sean liked a few pints and never took himself too seriously.

Sean married Amy from Castleisland in Kerry. They had 7 children: Thomas, Jimmy, Sean, Kathy…….
Amy was a lovely woman who visited our house a few times on her way to family in Kerry.

The first time I met Sean was at my uncle Joe's funeral in 1996. As far as I know, Sean worked in construction and a few of his sons have successful building companies. Sean himself died 12th of August 2006.

Written by nephew Tom Dowling:

Liam Dowling was born 22 July 1935, sSon of Thomas and Mary Ann Moylan-Dowling.

Liam had a very laid-back personality - it’s part of the Dowling DNA, I think! He emigrated to Nottingham in the United Kingdom in the 1950s. Here he met Eileen Leonard from Derrygonnelly, in Fermanagh at a dance in Nottingham in 1963. After a six-week courtship, they got engaged.

Our many conversations told me how financially difficult it was in their early years of marriage. Eileen worked as a nurse and would do nights, so she was always there for the kids. Even though times were tough Liam, Eileen and the kids made many summer
trips to Errill throughout the 1970s and 80’s. Over the past 30 years, I have had many happy memories of visiting the home of Liam
and Eileen at Cinderhill. There was always an open door to friends of the family who were always welcome - Eileen was the perfect host.

They had 4 children: Maureen, 6 weeks older than me, Ged, and twins Helen and Teresa. We keep in regular contact. Ged manages Raglan Road bar, a busy sports and Irish pub, in the heart of Nottingham. Except for their son Ged they all live within the same estate and Helen manages the Headstock pub at the top of the estate.

Liam died in June 2018 aged 83, I visited him a month before his death.

Written by nephew Tom Dowling:

Maurice was born 1 September 1936, the son and youngest child of Thomas and Mary Ann Moylan-Dowling.

Maurice later emigrated to the United Kingdom and settled in Manchester in 1955.

In 1955, Maurice married Hannah Lowe from Templetuohy, Tipperary. The wedding was in Nottingham and his brother Jer was the best man. It was not a happy marriage from the outset I don’t think either family were in favour, Jer thought he was too young to get married but supported them. They had a daughter Mary in 1957 but by the time Mary was a teenager both parents abandoned her.

Hanna Lowe later moved to Germany and Maurice would remarry much later and had two children from the second marriage.

Maurice died on 22nd August 2010 in Manchester from many health complications he had been ill for some time.

Mary (Maurice's daughter) continued to keep in touch with my dad Jer, and he sent her money occasionally and he visited her in Nottingham. She had a troubled life, married 3 times and, on one occasion, on a visit to Nottingham Jer went from police station to police station until he finally tracked down where Mary was living. She died in her mid-50s.
