The record supporting this entry is very scant but appears to refer to P R Dowling who was a slave in the British Colony of British Guiana and ceased to be enslaved about 1933, probably as a result of the abolition of slavery Act . Dowling's owner appears to have made an uncontested claim (number 1935) for compensation and was awarded £6 / 0 shillings / and 1 pence on 21 December 1835 to cover losses as a result of the legislation!
British Guiana, now independant Guyana, had a predominently sugar-cane based economy until the 1880's. Prior to the 1933 Act sugar platers depended almost exclusively on slave labour to produce sugar. The capital Georgetown was the site of a significant slave rebellion in 1823. The majority of plantations were run by London-based Booker Group of companies (Booker Brothers, McConnell & Co.) since the early 19th century right up to the 1950's. British Guiana was referred to as Booker's Guiana due to its dominence over employment in the colony.
