    1:- Hi Brian, Thank you so much for compiling this website and for so generously sharing your research.My name is Vanessa Dowling. I live in Laois. My ancestor was Daniel Dowling born in Ballyfin 1825. My Father was told by his Father that we have a relative who was a Sergeant in the 1916 rising. He was told his name was "Edward Kent".I haven't been able to find any connection to anyone of that name and I am wondering if you came across anyone in your research. My Dad was 13 when his father died so his recollection, while clear, may not be accurate. My Dad died suddenly last year aged 66. He had hit a block in his research of our family history and I am keen to continue his work. Your website has been incredibly helpful to me. Thanks again. Kind Regards, Vanessa ;
    2:- Thank you for your kind words in relation to my Dad. We were devastated to lose him so early.
    I really never expected you to do any work on our family history, I just thought that you might have come across something in your research. I am delighted that you are interested in exploring it. My Dad is Edward Patrick Dowling (Paddy) 05/10/1952. He was a station officer in the Fire Service here in Portarlington Co. Laois. His parents were Sarah Carroll and John Dowling. Sarah had previously been married to William Carroll so their marraige certificate refers to Sarah Matthews. I will send you a link to the family tree that I have been building on Ancestry. I have been able to follow my Mother, Marian Knight back quiet a bit. My Grandmother only died last year and she was a wealth of information.
    The Dowling side of our family was always a mystery, so I am thrilled to find anything related to them. Thanks again for your interest. Kind Regards, Vanessa

HYPOTHESIS:- There are sufficient overlaps of data for the conjecture that Henry and James are the same person. It is possible that Henry joined the Army in 1911 and deserted but following the outbreak of World War 1 he re-enlisted. As he may have been subject to sanctions because of previous desertion he may have chosen to use a false name or, perhaps, had even addopted the false name of James following the desertion. In the event of his death from wounds the army (or War Graves Commission) merged the two into Henry James Dowling. A rather convoluted theory but no James Dowling is found in the same birth year from Drogheda to establish an alternative candidate for the medal.

United Kingdom: HMSO; Soldiers Died in the Great War database © Naval and Military Press Ltd 2010, Deaths within the period from 4th August 1914 (the declaration of war) to 11th November 1918 (Armistice Day) and, in some but not all cases, up to 25th March 1921.

    Collection Name: Soldiers Died In The Great War 1914-1919; Collection ID: SoldiersDiedInTheGreatWar1914-1919; Category: Military, armed forces & conflict; Subcategory: First World War; Collections from: Great Britain, UK None; Originally published in 1921 in 80 parts. Most parts covered a single regiment, subdivided into its various battalions. However, some parts covered groups of units such as the cavalry, smaller infantry regiments or other corps. "Soldiers Died" covers "other ranks" of the army only, not officers. "Other ranks" includes Privates, Lance Corporals, Corporals, Sergeants and Warrant Officers. In some units of the army, the rank Driver, Gunner, Pioneer, Rifleman, Sapper or Trooper is equivalent to Private."Other ranks" includes non-fighting men, such as cooks, stretcher-bearers and transport drivers.The names of 661,960 other ranks are included within "Soldiers Died". The name used by the soldier upon enlisting and in army records is given. This means that the alias appears instead of the true given name (which of course might be unknown to the army). It is a well-known fact that many men enlisted under a false name.,

    The plaques (which could be described as large plaquettes) were made of bronze, and hence popularly known as the "Dead Man’s Penny" or "Widow's Penny", because of the similarity in appearance to the somewhat smaller penny coin. 1,355,000 plaques were issued, which used a total of 450 tonnes of bronze,(1) and continued to be issued into the 1930s to commemorate people who died as a consequence of the war.(2).

    The Victory Medal (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a United Kingdom and British Empire First World War campaign medal. The design and ribbon was also adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA in accordance with the decision of the Inter-Allied Peace Conference at Versailles (a 'Winged Victory). A particular form of this historic Greek monument was chosen by each nation, except the nations in the Far East who issued the medal but with a different design. The dates of the war were in every case 1914 to 1918, except that of the British Empire, which gave the dates as illustrated (1914 to 1919). The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was not awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

    The British War Medal is a campaign medal of the United Kingdom which was awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces for service in the First World War. Two versions of the medal were produced. About 6.5 million were struck in silver and 110,000 were struck in bronze, the latter for award to Chinese, Maltese and Indian Labour Corps.
