Albert Ghica - Native name Albert Gjika; Born 1868; Died 1928; Occupation writer; Language French,Romanian,Albanian; Citizenship Romanian; Notable works L'Albanie et la question d'Orient; Relatives Ghica family.
Albert Ghica was an Albanian-Romanian writer and socialite. He was a member of the Ghica noble family, which had Albanian origin. Later in life he changed his name to the Albanian form Gjika, for more credentials in his quest for the Albanian throne. He was a pretender to the Albanian throne. A committee was founded in Paris by Dervish Hima and Dimitri Papazoglou, an Aromanian captain that sought to make Ghica the prince of Albania. Good relations were maintained between Ghica and Ismail Qemali, an Albanian leader involved in the Albanian national movement. Writing on the Albanian struggle against the Ottomans at the beginning of the 20th century, British journalist and foreign correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in the Balkans H. N. Brailsford spoke the following in his book Macedonia; Its Races and Their Future (1906): "The second claimant (for a possible future Albanian State) is a certain Prince Albert Ghica, who comes of a family of Albanian origin, long resident in Roumania. It has given Hospodars (Governors) to the old Wallachian provinces and diplomats to the modern kingdom, and enjoys princely rank in the Austrian Empire. Prince Albert is a comparatively young man with plausible manners and a dubious past, who speaks fluent French, and knows neither one word of the Albanian language nor the elements of Albanian geography. He has been chosen honorary president by one of the numerous clubs of Albanian immigrants in Bucharest, and on the strength of this social honour he poses in European hotels as the chief-elect of the Albanian people. He talks of venturing in person into Albania and raising the flag of revolt. We shall see."
He later seemed to have abandoned his bid for throne, as the personal letters Austrian Baron Franz Nopcsa von Felső-Szilvás, himself a pretender to the Albanian throne, suggest. They State the following: "Albert Ghica, who had been a pretender to the Albanian throne himself, had managed to interest the Duke of Montpensier in the Albanian throne. He ceded his 'rights,' which were recognized by no one as a matter of fact, to the duke and began to campaign on his behalf in exchange for an appropriate remuneration."
Under his presidency, a Pan-Albanian Congress was organized in Bucharest in 1905 where Ismail Qemali, the future founder of the modern Albanian State and its first head of State and government, deliberated with Bucharest's Albanian community. Albert Ghica also wrote on the topic of the Albanian issue, publishing the book L'Albanie et la question d'Orient: (Solution de la question d'Orient).

    Grenfell Record - Saturday December 11 1909:
    A NOTABLE WEDDING - ALBANIAN PRINCE'S BRIDE
The marriage of Prince Albert Ghica to Miss Margaret Dowling, postponed from December, was celebrated very quietly on February 27th at St Mary's, Cadogan Street, in the presence of a few relatives of the bride and friends of both bride and bridegroom. A rumor was about in the morning that the Turkish Embassy had designs for the hindrance of the marriage, and a large and sympathetic crowd assembled outside the church to help in any agreeable scenes which might ensue; but all passed without incident.

Prince Ghica, a handsome man of about thirty-five years of age, was supported as best man by Lieutenant Maican, of the Crown Princess of Roumania's Cavalry, A.D.C. to the Crown Prince of Roumania, who appeared in the handsome hussar uniform of his regiment, but the bridegroom wore conventional morning dress. Mr Foster led the bride up the isle, and Mrs Dowling gave away her daughter, who wore a princess gown of thick satin, embroidered in lilies in silver shades of chenille, with festoons of pearls across the front, her only ornament being an immense misshapen pearl at the throat.

She wore a tulle veil thrown off the face, and held in place by a small wreath of orange blossoms, and carried a handsomely-bound prayer book instead of a bouquet. Her sole attendant was her sister, who carried a shower bouquet of white roses and lilies, with a white crepe dress, and whose hat was of unrelieved white. The church was decorated with palms and white flowers, and Father Kelly officiated.

The marriage being a "mixed" one, the ceremony was very brief. By special permission there was music, the march composed for the occasion being played on the organ. The Pope sent his blessing. The service was partly in French and partly in English, the bridegroom responding in French.

    THE BRIDE'S FORTUNE
A small reception was held by Mrs Dowling in the Winter Garden of the Hans-crescent Hotel, where a buffet luncheon was set out at a long table gay with jonquils and lilies. The health of the Prince and Princess was proposed, and three cheers were given by the guests, who expected to hear a speech from Prince Ghica when silence was asked for his reply. But his Highness only thanked his friends and proposed the health of "Les Dames."

Mrs Dowling wore a mauve toque with a jetted black gown: Lady Emily Cherry brought a daughter, and others among the guests were Lady Duff Gordon, Miss Hilda Stanley, Mme. Berthon in a wonderful white panne gown inlaid with pale embroideries, General and Mrs Shaw, Mrs Charles Cobbold, Mrs Capel Cure, Mrs Chamberlain, Lady Allen, and Captain Duncombe.

The bride has a handsome fortune, her father having emigrated from County Kildare to New Zealand before she was born, and there he established a secure footing and made a considerable sum of money.

Prince Albert Ghica is the chosen leader of the Independence Party which seeks to free Albania from Turkish claims, and it is stated that 150,000 Albanians are ready to follow him. The Prince comes of a family which has always identified itself with the cause of liberty in Albania. His great-grandfather, Prince Gregory Ghica, of Moldo-Valachie, was beheaded by the Turks i n 1777. The newly-wedded Princess Ghica is a keen supporter of the cause, and is ready to face all eventualities. --- "Daily Mail."

The marriage of Prince Albert Ghica and Miss Maragaret Dowling was originally announced to take place at the end of last year, and much speculation has been aroused as to the cause of the postponement. Additional interest has been added by the announcement, issued a s short time since by the Turkish Embassy, to the effect that the Prince had no right to describe himself as a claimant to the Albanian Throne, the Prince, it seems, having been so described. The Embassy also refers to him as "Mr. Albert Ghica, a Roumanian subject born of Roumanian parents," as one, "who styles himself his Highness Prince Ghica," and asserts that he has "no right to represent himself as having claims to a so-called Albanian Throne." The Prince, however, States that he can produce absolute proof of his right to the title of "Prince." He further States that he has never been a pretender to the throne of Albania, but that he was elected supreme chief of the movement for promoting Albanian independence."

PRINCE ALBERT GHICA AND HIS IRISH BRIDE
    LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

    London March 8
London will on Monday afternoon witness one of the most romantic marriages of modern times when at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Cadogan-street, Prince Albert Ghica and Miss Margaret Dowling will be made man and wife together.

The history of their engagement is full of interest. for not so very long ago the Prince and his bride-elect were strangers.

Miss Dowling is a wealthy Irish girl, and with her mother and younger sister, Miss Jose Dowling, she has spent much time in travelling about on the Continent.

It was during one of these sojourns abroad that she met her fate in the handsome and interesting personage of Prince Albert Ghica. It was a case of love at first sight, although the bride's mother at first did not approve of the match, on account of the somewhat dangerous mission that the Prince has in hand - that of freeing his unhappy fellow-countrymen, the Albanians, from the shameful tyranny of the Turk.

    MOTHER QUICKLY WON
However, the mother was quickly won - when she got to know the Prince better, and her consent was readily given to the engagement - in fact, she will give her daughter away on Monday.

For a time all went as merrily as a marriage bell, and the wedding was fixed to take place in London on December 14. and great preparations were made, and a costly trousseau was ordered from a well-known Bond-street firm.

The wedding reception was arranged, and everything was complete - when, at the eleventh hour, the Prince discovered that the Roumanian Embassy required three clear weeks' notice of the marriage before it could be legally solemnised in this country.

Then all the invitations - over 300 having been issued - had to be cancelled, and the wedding breakfast returned to the caterers.

Following on this postponement came an urgent call to the Prince from his agents abroad, and he had to leave for Rome at a moment's notice.

The three weeks time being up, the marriage could have taken place in London, only the bridegroom was still detained on the Continent on most urgent business.

Mrs Dowling and her two daughters were much worried by callers at their charming house in Cadogan Place, and so they decided to go to Paris, and their wait until Prince Ghica was free to return to the girl of his choice.

    REMARKABLE CIRCULAR
In the meanwhile the following strange notice was issued to the Press by the Turkish Embassy:-
"The Imperial Ottoman Government declares that Mr Albert Ghica, a Romanian subject, born of Roumanian parents, and who styles himself his Highness Prince Ghica, has no right whatsoever to represent himself as having claims to a so-called Albanian Throne."

This was brought to the notice of the Prince, who at once issued a reply stating that the Ghicas are princes of the Holy German Empire, the Russian Empire, and, to his deep regret, of the Imperial Ottoman Empire, and proving beyond doubt that he is the son of the late Prince Constantine Ghica (his mother, Princess Helene Ghica, being still alive, and taking the keenest interest in her son's "cause"), the grandson of Prince Alexander Ghica, and the great-grandson of Prince Gregory Ghica, Prince of Moldo-Valachie, who was beheaded by the Turks in 17777.

    NOT A PRETENDER
The Prince also pointed out that he was not pretending to the throne which did not exist, but what he was going to try to do was to free the Albanians from the yoke of the terrible Turk.

Now on Monday comes the second chapter in this romantic courtship, and the wedding will be at 2 p.m. and as quiet as possible, but many well-wishers and admirers of the bridegroom and his cause will be present, but it is not expected that the Turkish Embassy will be officially represented.

The future Princess Ghica is in full sympathy with her lover's cause, and she is bound to win more supporters for the Prince. The future of this romantic couple will be watched with much interest by all their friends in England and abroad.
