Mr Dowling was 14 years old when he encountered a blizzard, so that making of the man has practically all taken place since that event, unless "the boy was father to the man," and in his earlier experiences he laid the foundation for that indomitable pluck and perseverance which has charaterised his remarkable career.

Michael John Dowling was born in the New England Village of Huntington, Hampden County, Massachusetts, Feb. 17, 1866. He was an only child and his mother died when he was ten. Both parents were of Irish birth, a remote ancester of his father's family having acquired the name of "Mickel Natty" on account of his skills as wood carver and architect.

Mr Dowling's mother was Miss Barry, a descendant of the well-known Barry family in the Valley of the Lee in Ireland. His father, J. J. Dowling, is children still living at Huntington. After Mr. Dowling's birth the family resided for several years in Massachusetts. Then his father, a carpenter, followed the fashion and came West, settling in Chicago. The family lived in a little white house with green blinds that stood on the spot where the Chicago Board of Trade building now rears its massive walls.

At the time of the Chicago fire, 1872, the Dowling home was burned, like every other house for blocks around, and the juvenile Michael was separated from his parents, following the crowd that finally camped in Lincoln park. The experiences of that time are still vivid in Mr. Dowling's memory. He remembers the navy blue suit he wore and the sailor hat, and how an old woman took care of him as though he were her own child. He was among the many children who were "advertised," the papers containing great long lists of the missing and lost.

Childlike, the misfortunes of the many and his separation from parents never seemed to affect his spirits. He seemed to feel that it would come out all right, and when his father found him the future statesman was hunting for relics to be sold to the thousands of sight-seers who flocked into the city by every train, after the fire had subsided and there was nothing left to burn.

After the Chicago fire the Dowling family went to Buffalo, where they resided a year or two and then back to their old home in Massachusetts, where his mother died in 1876. The spirit of unrest again stirred his father, and with the only boy he set out for St. Louis where they remained for nearly a year. At St. Louis young Dowling went to school and, after school hours, he picked coal along the railroad as was then a common practice for the boys of ten or twelve. The following summer, 1877, the young man wanted to go to work and found a berth as "cookee" on several of the river steamers plying...

During the blizzard of 1880 Dowling was riding on the back of a wagon and was bounced off the wagon and into a snow bank. The blizzard was such that the driver of the wagon could not hear Dowling's cries for help. Dowling stumbled around in the below zero temperatures before seeking shelter in a haystack. In the morning he found that his limbs were frozen. Two legs, one arm and four fingers on his remaining hand and arm were amputated. Despite this Dowling went on to be a successful figure in Minnesota politics, he was a successful businessman and he "blazed the Yellowstone Trail West to Yellowstone National Park and East to Plymouth Rock."

ST. PAUL, April 26--Michael J. Dowling, 55 years old, a banker of Olivia, Minn., who gained notice for his success in life after losing both legs, an arm and a hand in his boyhood, died yesterday.

After the war, Mr. Dowling made an eight months' tour of England lecturing to disabled war veterans on rehabilitation at the request of the British government. The last two years he had been touring this country in the interest of war wounded.

Suffering amputation of both legs, his left arm and the greater part of his right hand when 14 years old as a result of exposure in a blizzard, he soon afterward was left an orphan and became a county charge. The county commissioners sent him to Carlton College. His rapid rise followed. He leaves a widow and three children.

Mr. Dowling addressed the New Jersey Legislature here a year ago.
