Michael Dowling was born before 11 January 1880 in Knockaniner near Mountrath, Queen's County, Ireland. He was named after his father Michael (shown spelt as Doolan) and his mother was Anne Carroll from nearby Sconce.
Michael was taken to be baptised on 11 January 1880. The Sponsors or witnesses were William Bergin and Bridget Dowling. Domicile: Knockaniner. (Source: Mountrath, Ireland: Catholic Church Parish Records (Baptisms) (1823-1880)). For reasons unknown his birth was not registered, as required by law, until 15 February 1881 when his birth was shown by his mother as 27 January 1881. It is possible that giving the more recent birth avoided a prosecution for late registration.
Michael was the youngest of a family of five, his siblings were Mary, Anthony, John and Catherine. His father was a farmer and Michael would have grown up playing around the farm and helping with chores. He probably would have gone swimming in the river near the mill at Castletown where, in hot weather, people still cool off today.
Like so many young men in Ireland at that time Michael was faced with a lack of opportunity. While the effects of the Great Famine were only in his parent's memory and food was now in good supply he still needed to earn a living.
Michael's father died before 1901 as his mother is shown as a widow in the census. The farm would be passed to his older brother Anthony. The 31st of March 1901 was census night in Ireland and Michael was shown as living at home, in Knockanina. His entry shows him as 19 years of age (making his birth date 1882 but census dates are often inaccurate) . The census shows him as a farmer who can Read & Write, speaking English as opposed to Irish. Born in Knockanina.
The plot where they lived was shown as plot 9 of Knockanina. The property amounted to a fully built private '2nd class' dwelling of stone walls and tiled roof, it had four rooms and five windows to the front of the house. The premises contained two outhouses of one stable and one cow house.
On 1st August 1912, according to a side note written on Michael's baptism entry, Michael "marries Rosanna Kavanagh in Raheny Chapel." From this marriage there are for children: Jack, James, Michael and George. Roseanne died shortly after giving birth to George.
Michael, shown aged 33, was still in Knockanina for the census on 2 April 1911 with his mother and brother Anthony.
Michael emigrated to America landing in Canada. In Canada he became a Police Officer in Brantford Ontario for over 20 years.
Michael's second marriage, around 1920, was to Londoner Alice Holmes ( widow of Lewin Pratt) from this marriage there was Thomas (1923), Denis (1924) and Mary (1926).
He was tall, straight, good looking, with A thick Irish brogue. He was well-known and well-liked for his magnificent sense of humour but he also had a fiery temper. He was an efficient officer, in line for promotion, who would patrol his 'beat' in Ontario on foot. Once he turned his helmet back to front and, when asked why, he said, "So that folks wouldn't know whether I was coming or going!"
The family lived in fine house and, as Michael was popular, there would often be friends around. Michael enjoyed a 'glass of cheer'. The family owned a pew in the nearby church with their name on it. It was a local spectacle as every Sunday the whole family (ten children from all marriages) would parade in their 'Sunday Best' to go to church with Michael and Alice following behind.
Michael would get to work, at the police station, by bicycle. When his shift was ending his daughter, Mary, would grab any coat she could find and run to a certain street corner. She would wait in the cold and dark for his bike to appear. She had him all to herself as her tall father in uniform would reach down and pick up his little girl and sit her on the handle bars to ride her home.
About 1929 Alice, with daughter Mary and one other son went to Ireland on the SS Calgaric. They visited Mary's grandfather's farm - a big place, with many horses an cattle. Alice would walk out into the evening at twilight and standing on a hilltop would be able to hear Monks singing from a nearby Monastery in the valley below. To Alice, herself a lovely singer, Knockaniner, with its bluish mist on the hills, had a quiet beauty.
It was 19th December 1932 and Michael and Alice were out shopping for Christmas in their automobile, believed to be a Ford Model T, there was a serious accident. Both barely survived and Michael was left so badly injured that he had to leave the Police Force. However, from that moment on, the family started to break apart.
It was now the Michael became driven to pursue property that he believed might be his by right in Ireland. Whether it was the possibility of improving his lot with getting hold of large amounts of land or the effects of the accident we do not know but Michael left his family and home in Canada. In 1933 he left for Ireland to Queen's County, now called Laois, but to establish a right of claim he would have to remain there for seven years. The seven years that followed were hard for Michael's family and nothing is known of what Michael did during that time.
Even after that time his claim was effectively unsuccessful. He returned to America almost a stranger. On his arrival in New York he was refused entry until Alice vouched for him by recognising him as her husband. However, this was an administrative matter only for any emotional ties between and Michael and his family were now broken by the years and he went his separate way.
His family lost track of him until 1972 when his daughter Mary heard from her brother that their father was in hospital Guelph, Ontario. Mary visited him out of respect, he was now about 92 years old but despite the distance between them she recognised him immediately. Mary had to introduce herself and Michael remembered his only daughter. Mary describes herself what follows, "I took his hand and prayed for him, softly enough for him to hear. I had never seen a grown man weep uncontrollably. He added that he had always, since he was a little boy, believed in Jesus Christ. After I forgave him from my heart and dried his tears we split a beer! I kissed him good-bye. He died a few days later".
Apparently just before he died, in February 1972, he told the nurse to remove the tray from his lap as, he said, "I'll be dying now". The nurse told Mary that he was looking towards the door and threw back the covers as if to get out of bed. He then dropped his head and died in peace.
At his funeral, with a Catholic Mass, the Liturgy told that 'Simon had to wait to be a very old man before he laid eyes on Jesus the Saviour".

Regards To You....Mary

My Brother Told Me He Was In Hospital In Guelph Ont....And I Went To Visit Him.... .Even Tho' He Was An Old Man , I Recognized Him Right Away...I Had To Introduce Myself To Him And He Seemed To Remember I Was His Only Daughter.....I Took His Hand .And Prayed For Him ...Softly Enough For Him To Hear ...I Had Never Seen A Grown Man Weep Uncontrollably ..He Added That He Had Always, Since He Was A Little Boy , Believed In Jesus Christ...After I Forgave Him From My Heart , And Dried His Tears....We Split A Beer...And I Kissed Him Good-Bye......He Died A Few Days Later...... Just One More Thing...Just Before He Died...He Told The Nurse..To Remove His Tray From His Lap...Because.. He Said" I'll Be Dying Now"....The Nurse Afterward Told Me ...He Was Looking Toward The Door....Throwing Back The Covers As If To Get Out Of Bed.....He Dropped His Head And Died In Peace....(.Feb.1972 ) Every Life I Am Sure Has A Story......At His Funeral...The Liturgy At The Catholic Mass...Was That Simon Had To Wait To Be A Very Old Man Before He Laid Eyes On Jesus (The Saviour) I Hope You Do Not Mind Me Going On Like This... I Now Wish I Had Not Missed So Much Of Him And His Life... I Wish I Could Call Back More Of His Life And Years... With A View To Understanding... I Am A Grandmother Now Myself And Understand...How Lonely He Must Have Been. If This Letter Doesn't Reach You Its O.K. I Appreciate Just Talking To Someone Who May Have Traced Some Of His Long Lost Kin Folks In Ireland... May The Lord Bless You Brian And Cause You To Prosper In Everything You Do...
