FIFTY YEARS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have Mr. and Mrs. James Dowling Been Married.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last evening at their home in this city, Mr. and Mrs. James Dowling celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, about forty relatives and friends being present between the hours of 7 and 11 p.m. There was much merriment and feasting on account of the happy event, and each of the children gave a twenty-dollar gold piece to the honored couple. There were many other beautiful presents from friends.
The wedding cake was rich in trimmings of gold and bore the figures 1854 and 1904. It was a huge three-story affair, with a mansard and railing on top to keep the little cupids from falling off. It was baked and built in Eau Claire under the supervision of three of the children who live there. Other refreshments of sandwiches, tea, coffee, ice cream, Etc., were served.
Mr. James Dowling was born in Roscoman county, Ireland, August 12, 1826, and Mrs. Dowling in Donegal county, Ireland, Nov. 1, 1837. Their love affair was in Pittsburg, Pa. where they were married in 1854, and in 1856 they came to Baraboo where they have resided most of the time since. They moved to Providence, R. I. in 1869, but returned to Baraboo in 1876.
Eleven children blessed their union, nine of whom are now living. There are 31 grandchildren. The children are James Dowling and Mrs. Mary Holland of Providence, R. I.; Thos Dowling, Eddie Dowling and Mrs. Aggie Bock of Eau Claire; John Dowling of Everett, Wash., Mrs. Kate Rackett of Chicago (now in England); Grace Dowling of Baraboo; Michael Dowling of Chicago. All of the children were present except Mary, John and Kate. Besides the other halves and families of some of the children, Miss Lona Binder of Eau Claire, was also present.
May Mr. and Mrs. Dowling live to enjoy many more happy anniversaries, is the wish of their host of friends.
