My father was John Sylvester Dowling, born 8/6/1905.

My Grandfather, who I believe was Sylvester, died prior to my father's birth. Information is sketchy. My Grandmother, first name Mary died, late 1930's or early 40's in Astoria, NYC, NY. My memory of her is limited. Per my brother, my Grandmother was a nurse, but worked for the Mayor of NYC, either as a cook or housekeeper. Circa unknown. All searches for either are negative.

Per my father, my Grandmother's family had property called O'Lawlor's (or O'lawler's) Mill around Wicklow area.

My father had several siblings, Thomas, the oldest, Joseph, James, plus sisters Mary and Julia.

Marriage of Grandparents, either date or location unknown.

I set up a family page called "dowling's of astoria, NY". Now have to figure out how to navigate there.

I may try using the given name for my Grandfather of Thomas, since that was the first born name. Sylvester might be Great grandfather's name.

More to follow later as I become more able in the software.

Hi, Brian. I recognized your address from your website that a family member recommended. Thanks for your response. Sorry, if I confused you. I don't exactly remember what I posted in June. MICHAEL DOWLING did have a brother William. I try to give as much correct information as possible. I either have the birth and/or baptism records for his siblings.

In regard to my most recent posting, I'll see if I can clarify what I wrote. I'll include what new findings I have.

WILLIAM DOWLING and ANNE BROWN had the following children (of those that I located); LAWRENCE (b about 1831), THOMAS (b 1838), MICHAEL (b 1842), ANNE (b 1843), ANASTASIA (b 1846), WILLIAM (b 1849).

LAWRENCE DOWLING (b about 1831 as mentioned above) married MARY MOORE in Feb 1869 in the chapel of Graigue.

LAWRENCE and MARY's children were (that I have found so far); WILLIAM (b May 1870), JOHN (b Dec 1871), JOHN (b Dec 1872), THOMAS (b Feb 1875), ANNE (b Nov 1876), ANASTASIA (b July 1879), MICHAEL and his twin sister, MARGARET (b Oct 1884), JAMES (b ? 1886). While speaking to my second cousin, she informed me that she heard that Michael had another brother named Lawrence, but for some
reason or other he either was disowned or just went his own way.

First marriage for Catherine Walsh: JOHN MOORE and CATHERINE WALSH married in Feb 1863 in Doonane. JOHN and CATHERINE's children were: PATRICK (b 1863), ELLEN (b 1864), MARY (b 1865), BRIDGET (b 1867), THOMAS (b 1869), JAMES (b 1870), MARTIN (b 1872).

Second marriage for Catherine Walsh; PATRICK DOOLEYand CATHERINE WALSH were married in Nov 1874 in the Catholic Church of Mayo, Queens County. PATRICK and CATHERINE's children were (that I have been able to find): MARGARET (b 1876), CATHERINE (b 1877), ELLEN (b 1881), ELIZABETH (b 1884), MARY (b 1888).
