Congratulations on your work. My name is James Naughton and I am your second cousin.
My grandmother was Julia Mary Dowling a sister of your grandfather. My mother was Bridie Maher and she had a hand in rearing your father and his siblings, her first cousins. She married John Naughton and lived in Bansha Co. Tipperary. Your father spent some time near Bansha during the second world war( the emergency in Ireland) and frequently visited our family.
I have done some work on the family tree and would be glad to exchange information--you can contact me at Naughjim@esatclear.ie

Hello Brian
To give you some info on my mother's connection with your father and his siblings--my mother was born in 1909 and when in her teen's went to assist her uncle in the rearing of the family and she practically reared Donal, Alec and Thomas as she used call them. She became very familiar with all the Dowlings in Mountrath and Dysartbeagh and continuously reminisced about Alec and Donal in particular. In the 1940's Ireland did not enter the second World War and choose to declare a State of emergency so the whole period of the second World
War was known as the Emergency. During that time young men were enlisted in the army and were despatched around the country to defend us against invasion and more probably from ourselves. At that time your father enlisted and was billeted in Aherlow Castle, a fine old castle about two miles from Bansha. During that time he was a regular visitor to Bansha and always called to see my mother.
This was before my time but I did meet him once or twice afterwards.
Before I conclude just to tell you a little story about Donal of whom my mother was also very fond. In the 1970's when my parents were retired and after an absence of over forty years since she had seen him, a man called to her door and said he was selling second hand carpets and would she be interested in buying any. She recognised him and said "Donal Dowling, you are not going to fool me, I could never forget you" so they spent the afternoon going back over old times. Donal had been on holidays and called thinking he could pull a fast one on her-he was very pleased that after all these years she recognised him immediately.

Hi:
My name is John Thomas Dowling. I live at 18 Clubhouse Circle, Central Islip, NY, USA.
I had done some research on my family, but basically haven't gotten too far. My Grandfather's name was Sylvester Dowling. According to my memory, my father said the name originally was O'Dowling, and they were from Wicklow.
My Grandmother's maiden name was Lawlor, or O'Lawlor (sic), with variations on that, supposedly, her family had a mill called by that name.
Information on the families migration is sketchy, we assume, late 1800's. Lace curtain Irish.
My Grandfather's name was carried by my father and his brothers as their middle name, i.e., John Sylvester, James Slyvester, Joseph Slyvester, Thomas Slyvester, the latter I believe was the oldest son. There were also several sisters, Julia & Mary are two I can remember.
I don't know if they migrated directly to the New York area, or elsewhere.
My Grandmother was supposedly a nurse, but I've also heard in the past that she worked for the Mayor of New York City as a cook or house keeper.
After visiting your site yesterday, I purchased "Broderbund's" Family Tree Maker, version 8. I'm now on a learning curve, I've visited several sites on line. My problem is I don't know if they were married here or in Ireland, when they migrated or other pertinent data.
Sylvester does not seem to be a common name among the Irish. Also we don't know if the spelling of the surname was changed by immigration. Several passenger lists sites I visited seem to allude to that scenario.
My Grandfather, I seem to remember died prior to my fathers birth, or shortly after. I only vaguely remember my Grandmother, she lived in Astoria, Queens, NYC, NY. at 11-49 Welling Court. I remember her wake being held at her home. It had to be in the late 1930's or early 40's.
Can you give me any direction on how best to go about continued research.
Sincerely
John T. Dowling

My father was John Sylvester Dowling, born 8/6/1905.
My Grandfather, who I believe was Sylvester, died prior to my father's birth. Information is sketchy. My Grandmother, first name Mary died, late 1930's or early 40's in Astoria, NYC, NY. My memory of her is limited. Per my brother, my Grandmother was a nurse, but worked for the Mayor of NYC, either as a cook or housekeeper. Circa unknown. All searches for either are negative.
Per my father, my Grandmother's family had property called O'Lawlor's (or O'lawler's) Mill around Wicklow area.
My father had several siblings, Thomas, the oldest, Joseph, James, plus sisters Mary and Julia.
Marriage of Grandparents, either date or location unknown.
I set up a family page called "dowling's of astoria, NY". Now have to figure out how to navigate there.
I may try using the given name for my Grandfather of Thomas, since that was the first born name. Sylvester might be Great grandfather's name.
More to follow later as I become more able in the software.
John T. Dowling.

Family Information
Posted by Kathleen McLaughlin on Sat, 27 Jan 2001 -Surname: Dowling, Lawlor
Am trying to locate information on my family who immigrated to the USA I assume mid 19 century.I know that my grandmother was Mary Lawlor(died April 4 1939) from Maryborough Queens county.I've been lead to believe there was a family mill (Lawlors mill)I'm not sure if she married my grandfather,Sylvester Dowling(died May 15 1911),there or in the USA. Although the Dowling name seems to connect in Laois as well. Any info would be appreciated. thanks.
